settingsyncinfo.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL, not a random filename. If Windows reports that settingsyncinfo.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows or the application requesting it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file description is Setting Synchronization Information. Microsoft update documentation lists it as a Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 component, including separate x86 and x64 builds. The public Microsoft records do not establish the exact file inventory for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 build, so do not assume that one old file is correct for every current installation.

| Additional servicing entry | Version 6.2.9200.20652 |
| Expected type | Protected Windows system component |
| Windows 10/11 inventory | Not established by the cited public Microsoft records |
Microsoft’s April 2013 Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 update rollup lists the DLL and its architecture-specific sizes. A later September 2013 update rollup lists it again, confirming that it was serviced as a Windows component.
On a normal installation, a Windows copy belongs in a protected Windows system directory. Do not assume that every file named settingsyncinfo.dll is that component. A same-named file in a game, application, download, or temporary folder must be checked against its digital signature and the program that placed it there.

What the error actually means
The wording gives useful clues:
- “The program can’t start because settingsyncinfo.dll is missing” usually means the requesting program cannot find the file it expects.
- “The specified module could not be found” can mean that the named DLL exists but another dependency is missing.
- “Could not be loaded” can indicate corruption, an incorrect build, a blocked file, or a dependency problem.
- “The procedure entry point could not be located” usually indicates a version mismatch between the application and the DLL.
- “Not designed to run on Windows or contains an error” can indicate corruption, an incompatible architecture, or a damaged installation.
The problem may have started after an interrupted Windows update, cleanup utility, antivirus quarantine, disk problem, or malware incident. If only one old program produces the message while Windows itself works normally, the application may be making an outdated or incorrect request.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Start with Windows Update because incomplete servicing can leave protected components in an inconsistent state.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- On Windows 11, select Windows Update. On Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all applicable updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
- Launch the program that produced the error again.
Use Microsoft’s Windows Update installation guidance if the update process itself reports an error.
For Windows 8, use the applicable update rollup or installation media for the installed edition and architecture. Do not substitute a file from a different Windows release.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
If the error remains, repair the Windows component store first and then repair protected system files. Microsoft recommends this order because SFC uses the component store as its repair source.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program again.
Microsoft documents these commands in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restarting before testing is important. If it reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. Do not immediately copy a DLL from another computer.

Manually hunting through repair commands and interpreting repeated DISM or SFC results can take time when you do not know which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what it finds; repair actions are performed by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for this repair.

Antivirus software may have quarantined or removed a genuine system file. Check the history before attempting any replacement.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
settingsyncinfo.dll. - Expand a detection to see its path, threat name, and action.
- Restore the file only if you can confirm that it is a legitimate, Microsoft-signed Windows component and the detection is a false positive.
- Run a full malware scan afterward.
- Restart and test the affected program.
Microsoft explains these actions in its guide to Protection history in Windows Security.
Do not disable antivirus protection simply to force an unknown DLL back into Windows. If the file was found outside a protected Windows directory, verify the parent application and its signature before taking action.
Fix 4: Repair the application that raises the error
If the error appears only when starting one program, do not assume that Windows is missing a file. The application may have a damaged installation, an obsolete dependency, or an incorrect reference to a Windows component.
First identify the program:
- Write down the exact application name from the error window.
- Note whether the error appears before the application opens or only when using a particular feature.
- Check whether Windows programs and other applications start normally.
- Open the application’s own settings or maintenance utility.
- Select Repair, Verify, or Check for updates if provided.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If there is no repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart.
- Download the installer from the application developer’s official website or use the original installation media.
- Install the current version.
- Restart and test.
If a game launcher identifies the DLL as one of its own files, use the launcher’s Verify or Repair function. Do not replace a Windows system component with a game copy, or a game file with a Windows copy.
There is no verified evidence that settingsyncinfo.dll is a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, graphics-driver file, or game-runtime file. Reinstalling those packages is not the primary fix unless the affected application specifically documents that dependency.
Fix 5: Check architecture and file location
Architecture errors commonly produce messages about a DLL being unsuitable for Windows.

To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Find System type.
- Note whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
The confirmed Windows 8 records contain different x86 and x64 builds. A 64-bit installation can also contain 32-bit system components, so the correct location depends on the component and servicing model.

To inspect a file that already exists:
- Right-click it.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and review the description, version, and publisher information.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, when present.
- Use View Certificate to inspect the signer.
A file can exist and still be unusable because it is corrupted, mismatched, blocked, or dependent on another missing module.
Fix 6: Use System Restore when repair began after a change
System Restore is useful when the error began after an update, driver installation, cleanup operation, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs without intentionally removing personal files. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore documentation.
It may not be available if System Protection was disabled or no restore point exists. If it does not resolve the issue, return to Windows Update and DISM/SFC rather than trying unrelated DLL downloads.
Drivers and Device Manager
There is no verified evidence that settingsyncinfo.dll belongs to a particular driver. Do not use Device Manager as the first response unless the error began with a specific hardware or driver installation.

If an affected application depends on a device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
If the issue began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
Finding the right driver manually can mean checking several hardware identifiers and comparing many package versions. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; installation through the full version is optional, and a driver update is not a substitute for repairing Windows or reinstalling the affected application.

What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
A downloaded copy may be unsigned, modified, the wrong architecture, or built for another Windows release. It may also contain malware. Even a file with the same name and a reported matching hash does not prove that the download is safe or appropriate for your installation.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, Microsoft installation media, or the affected program’s official installer instead.
Do not run regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal missing-DLL repair command.
Do not run:
regsvr32 settingsyncinfo.dll
unless authoritative documentation for the exact Windows build says that this component is meant to be registered. An error stating that the entry point was not found generally confirms that registration is not the correct remedy. Microsoft documents the tool in its regsvr32 command reference.
Do not use registry cleaners
A registry cleaner cannot recreate a protected Windows component or repair a missing dependency. It can make diagnosis harder by changing unrelated settings.
If the error still appears
Collect these details before escalating:
- The complete error text
- Windows edition and build
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The full path of any
settingsyncinfo.dllfile found - The name of the application producing the error
- Whether the file exists
- Whether Windows Update, DISM, SFC, antivirus review, or System Restore changed the behavior
If Windows components remain damaged after DISM and SFC, use a supported Windows repair or reinstallation path with matching installation media. If only one old application fails, the application’s official repair or reinstall remains the most appropriate resolution.

FAQ
Is settingsyncinfo.dll malware?
The filename is associated with a genuine Microsoft Windows component named Setting Synchronization Information. That does not make every same-named file safe. Verify its location, digital signature, and parent program.
Does Windows 10 or Windows 11 include this DLL?
The cited Microsoft records confirm it for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 servicing. They do not establish the exact file inventory for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 build. Repair the installed Windows version rather than installing an old file manually.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Should I copy the file into System32?
No. Do not copy a random download into System32 or SysWOW64. Let Windows servicing restore its own protected files, or reinstall the application that is requesting an application-specific copy.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ or DirectX fix it?
There is no verified evidence that this DLL belongs to either package. Use those installers only when the affected program’s official documentation identifies them as required dependencies.
What if the file exists but Windows still reports it as missing?
The message may refer to a missing dependency rather than the named DLL. It can also indicate corruption, a wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a blocked file. Run DISM and SFC, then inspect the application installation.
Is regsvr32 required?
Usually no. It is only appropriate when the DLL is documented as a self-registering component. settingsyncinfo.dll should not be registered merely because it is missing or cannot be loaded.
