“The program can’t start because cnbfus.dll is missing from your computer.” If Windows reports that cnbfus.dll was not found, could not be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows, repair the Canon printer package that installed it rather than downloading a loose DLL.
Which fix applies to you
Use this list to start at the most likely solution:
- The error appears while using, installing, or removing a Canon printer: reinstall the complete driver package for the exact printer model.
- The printer remains listed but its software was recently removed or updated: remove the printer, restart Windows, and install the driver again.
- Windows Security quarantined the file: check Protection history, then reinstall from Canon instead of restoring an unknown copy.
- The error started after a Windows or driver change: try driver rollback or System Restore.
- Several Windows functions are failing: run DISM first, then SFC.
- The file is found in an unexpected folder: check its path, scan it, and verify its digital signature.
- No Canon printer is installed anymore: remove stale Canon software and printer entries. Do not install the DLL just to silence a startup message.
What is cnbfus.dll
cnbfus.dll is an obscure component associated with the Canon Inkjet Printer Driver. Public file catalogs identify Canon Inc. and describe the file as a Canon Inkjet Printer Driver DLL. Catalog records associate it mainly with older Windows printer packages, including Vista- and Windows 7-era software.
Those records are not an official Canon compatibility list, so they do not establish which exact printer models use the file. The filename should be treated as one component of a Canon driver package, not as a standalone Windows runtime.

It is not a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, or general Windows system DLL. It may appear inside a printer package or Windows Driver Store, but that does not make it a core System32 component.
The message can appear in several forms:
- “The program can’t start because cnbfus.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading cnbfus.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because cnbfus.dll was not found.”
- “cnbfus.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly because cnbfus.dll was not found.”
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named file alone is missing. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by cnbfus.dll.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete Canon printer driver
This is the safest and most likely fix.
Remove the affected printer
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer associated with the error.
- Select Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
If the printer is not listed, continue with the Canon software removal and driver cleanup steps below.
Install the correct package
- Identify the exact Canon model from the printer label or its old Windows entry.
- Open Canon’s official Support page.
- Search for that model.
- Choose your version of Windows and its architecture.
- Download the complete printer setup or driver package, not an individual DLL.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Connect the printer when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after installation.
Use the package offered for the exact model. Do not mix files from different Canon models or copy a file from an older Vista or Windows 7 package into a newer driver folder.
A successful repair normally produces all of the following:
- The Canon printer installs without a missing-file message.
- Printing a test page works.
- The Canon utility opens normally.
- The error no longer appears during startup or sign-in.
If the printer is old and Canon does not offer a package for your Windows release, try the compatible driver supplied through Windows Update. Microsoft also explains how to download and install the latest printer drivers.

Fix 2: Remove stale Canon software and driver entries
Sometimes the printer is removed incompletely. Windows or a Canon utility can still try to load a DLL whose package is no longer present.

- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Remove every unused Canon printer entry.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Uninstall Canon printer utilities and setup programs that belong to the removed printer.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current compatible driver from Canon, or add the printer through Windows.
For deeper cleanup, use the classic print server properties:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
printui.exe /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Select the old Canon driver.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package if Windows offers that option.
- Restart the computer.
- Reinstall the correct driver.
Do not delete random files from the Windows Driver Store. Microsoft documents that the Driver Store normally contains driver packages under:
%windir%System32DriverStoreFileRepository
It can contain both Microsoft and non-Microsoft packages. Microsoft advises installing and removing packages through Windows driver-management processes rather than modifying that directory directly.
Fix 3: Use Windows Update or roll back the driver
A partially updated printer driver can leave Windows pointing to an old file.

Check Windows Update
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates, including optional driver updates if they clearly relate to the printer.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the printer again.
Roll back a recent driver
If the error began immediately after a driver update:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on the device.
- Right-click the Canon printer or related device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Restart Windows.
If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, remove the printer and reinstall the previous compatible package offered by Canon. Microsoft provides additional Device Manager driver guidance.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may have removed the file, or it may have detected a damaged or counterfeit copy.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
cnbfus.dllor the Canon driver. - Expand the event and note the original file path and detection name.
Do not restore the file automatically. Microsoft warns that allowing a detected file can expose the computer if it is actually malicious. Reinstalling the complete package from Canon is safer.
If you restore a file only after confirming that it came from a genuine Canon package, run a full Microsoft Defender scan afterward. A copy located outside a Canon driver directory should receive extra scrutiny.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these tools when Windows Update, printer installation, or several protected Windows components are also malfunctioning. They are not a substitute for reinstalling a missing third-party Canon driver.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Canon software again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC checks protected system files. If both commands complete successfully but the same Canon error remains, reinstall the Canon printer package rather than repeating the scans.

System Restore can help when the error began after a driver installation, software removal, or Windows change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore returns system files, registry settings, and installed programs to an earlier state without removing personal files. If no suitable restore point exists, return to the Canon driver reinstall.
Do not download or copy cnbfus.dll
Avoid DLL download sites and standalone copies offered in search results. A downloaded file can have the wrong version, wrong architecture, altered contents, or missing dependencies. It may also leave the damaged Canon installation untouched, so the error returns during the next printer operation.

Do not copy cnbfus.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A random application folder
- The Driver Store
The correct location depends on the driver package and its installation process. Let the Canon installer or Windows install the file through its driver package and INF instructions.
Does regsvr32 fix this error
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command. There is no evidence that this Canon printer-driver module should be self-registered.
Running:
regsvr32 cnbfus.dll
may produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. That result does not repair the driver and does not prove that the file itself is corrupt. Only use regsvr32 when the software vendor specifically documents registration for that particular DLL. Microsoft describes the command in its regsvr32 documentation.
32-bit and 64-bit Windows considerations
Public metadata includes a 32-bit build of cnbfus.dll, but that does not mean it belongs in SysWOW64 on every 64-bit computer. Printer packages can contain architecture-specific files and different installation paths.
Check your architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System → About.
- Read System type.
Install the Canon package offered for that Windows architecture and printer model. Never force a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit driver directory, or combine files from separate packages.

Capture the details before making further changes:
- The complete error text.
- Your Windows version and system architecture.
- The exact Canon printer model.
- The full path named in the message.
- The file’s Properties details and digital signature.
- Whether the file is present anywhere on the computer.
- Whether Windows Security quarantined it.
- Whether another Windows account can use the printer.
- Whether the message occurs at startup, during printing, or when opening a Canon utility.
If the file exists but Windows still cannot load it, investigate a missing dependency or an incompatible legacy driver instead of replacing the file again. If no Canon printer is installed, remove stale Canon utilities and printer entries, restart, and check which startup program is requesting it.

Is cnbfus.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with an older Canon Inkjet Printer Driver package. It may be stored in the Driver Store, but it is not a modern core Windows DLL.

Which Canon printer uses cnbfus.dll?
Public metadata connects it with Canon printer-driver software, but Canon’s public support pages do not provide a verified model-by-model mapping. Identify the printer that was installed when the error first appeared.
Should I place it in System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Install the complete driver package. Windows chooses the appropriate driver location.

There is no evidence that those runtimes are required specifically for cnbfus.dll. Repair the Canon driver first.
Why does the error appear after uninstalling a printer?
The printer entry, Canon utility, scheduled startup item, or driver reference may remain after the main package was removed. Remove the stale entries and reinstall or fully remove the Canon software.
Is a file signed by Canon safe?
A valid Canon digital signature is reassuring, but scan unexpected copies and verify their path. A filename alone does not establish authenticity.
What if no Canon printer is connected?
Remove unused Canon software and printer entries. Do not install cnbfus.dll solely to stop a startup notification.
