If cnbic4_6.dll is missing, the safest fix is to reinstall the Canon printer driver or complete Canon software package that installed it. cnbic4_6.dll is associated with a Canon Inkjet Printer Driver, not a normal Windows component, so downloading a replacement DLL or copying one into System32 is usually the wrong repair.
What this file actually does
cnbic4_6.dll appears to be a component of a Canon inkjet printer-driver package. Public file metadata identifies Canon as the company and commonly classifies the file as a 32-bit driver component. The filename belongs to a related Canon DLL family, but no public Canon page identifies one universal installer or one specific printer model that always contains it.
That matters because the correct repair depends on the printer model. Canon drivers are model-specific and may be packaged as a printer driver, MP Drivers, an IJ Printer Assistant Tool bundle, or another model-specific installer.
This is not normally:
- A Microsoft Windows system DLL
- A Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX file
- A .NET assembly
- A general-purpose application library
Some file indexes list a commonly seen version and size, but those values are identification clues rather than a guarantee for every copy of the file. A genuine copy should come from the Canon package installed for your printer and should be checked by its path, properties, signature where available, and installation source.

Causes compared with symptoms
| What you notice | Most likely cause | Best first repair |
|---|---|---|
| The error appears when printing or opening printer properties | Damaged or incomplete Canon driver | Remove and reinstall the Canon driver |
| The printer stopped working after an update | Incompatible or partially replaced driver | Install the current model-specific driver |
| The DLL disappeared after security software ran | Quarantine or a false positive | Check Windows Security Protection history |
| The printer was removed but Canon software remains | Broken reference to an old driver | Uninstall obsolete software and reinstall if needed |
| Several Windows features are failing | Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| The message says the module could not be found although the file exists | A dependency of the DLL may be missing | Reinstall the complete driver package |
| The error occurs in software unrelated to printing | Stale Canon utility or incorrect application reference | Identify the calling program before replacing anything |
Reported loader messages include “cnbic4_6.dll was not found,” “Cannot find cnbic4_6.dll,” “The specified module could not be found,” and “The procedure entry point could not be located.” The exact wording does not prove which Canon model installed the file.
Fix 1: Reinstall the correct Canon printer package
This is the most likely solution when printing, scanning, printer properties, or a Canon utility triggers the error.
- Find the exact printer model. Check the label on the printer or the existing printer entry in Windows.
- Open Canon’s official support site manually.
- Search for the exact model.
- Select your Windows edition and architecture when Canon asks for them.
- Download the current printer driver or complete software package.
- If the installer offers to remove an existing installation, allow it to do so.
- Restart Windows when the installer requests it.
- Print a test page.
If the printer is still listed but the installer refuses to proceed, remove the printer first:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Canon installer again.
- Add the printer when prompted, or return to Printers & scanners and select Add device.
A successful repair means the error no longer appears when opening printer properties or printing, and the Canon utility can start normally.

Do not manually delete files from the Windows driver store while attempting this repair. Microsoft warns that indiscriminate driver-store deletion can cause unpredictable behavior. If an old package must be removed, use the printer manufacturer’s uninstaller, Device Manager, or a specifically identified driver package.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which installed drivers are stale when you are hunting through multiple hardware packages; its free scan identifies the issue, while the repair or driver installation requires the full version. For this file, the exact Canon model package remains the definitive source.
Fix 2: Remove the printer and add it again through Windows
A damaged printer registration can leave Windows pointing to a driver component that is no longer present.

- Select Add device.
- Allow Windows to search for the printer.
- If Windows finds it, complete the setup and print a test page.
If Windows installs only a generic driver and the error remains, do not keep repeating the same automatic setup. Remove the generic entry and install the model-specific Canon package instead.
Microsoft also provides printer troubleshooting and driver-installation guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows Update can supply a compatible driver, but it may not include every Canon utility or feature.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
If cnbic4_6.dll disappeared after an antivirus scan, verify whether it was quarantined.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any item referring to the Canon driver or the missing file.
- Check its original path and detection details.
Do not restore the DLL solely because its filename looks familiar. A file with the correct name can still be malicious or damaged. Reinstalling the Canon package is safer because it restores the complete driver set from the manufacturer’s installer.
If you are confident the detection concerns the genuine Canon installation, follow Microsoft’s documented restore or allow instructions. If you are uncertain, leave the file quarantined, run a full Microsoft Defender scan, and reinstall the driver from Canon rather than restoring an isolated file.
Fix 4: Install Windows updates, then repair Windows components
SFC and DISM are useful when Windows itself is damaged, but they are not the primary repair for a third-party Canon driver DLL. SFC repairs protected Windows system files; it is not guaranteed to restore a missing Canon component.

First install pending updates:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the printer again.
If DISM reports that it cannot repair the image, install all available Windows updates, restart, and run the commands again. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, test Windows and the printer after restarting. If both commands complete without finding a problem, return to the Canon driver reinstall rather than trying random DLL replacements.
When repeating DISM and SFC manually becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what it identifies; the free scan shows the problems, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the Canon package when the missing component belongs to that driver.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 5: Verify the driver architecture
The commonly indexed cnbic4_6.dll is classified as 32-bit. That does not mean it belongs in System32, and it does not mean a 64-bit version should be substituted.
A 32-bit Canon printer driver can run on 64-bit Windows through Windows’ compatibility support. Printer-driver files may be stored under print-driver or spooler-related directories rather than in the normal application folders.
Use the package selected for:
- The exact Canon printer model
- Your Windows edition
- The architecture requested by the Canon installer
- The application or driver that loads the file
Do not assume that copying a 32-bit DLL beside a 64-bit executable will solve the error. If the message says “The specified module could not be found” even though the file exists, another dependency may be missing. Reinstalling the complete package is more reliable than replacing one file.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 unless the vendor requires it
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a compatible self-registration entry point, commonly COM or ActiveX components. A printer-driver DLL is normally installed and configured through its driver package and INF files.

- Save up to $1,000 on ink (1)

Therefore, this is generally not an appropriate repair:
regsvr32 cnbic4_6.dll
A “module failed to load” or “entry point was not found” result from regsvr32 does not prove that the file is bad. It may simply mean that the DLL is not designed to register itself.
Use regsvr32 only if Canon’s instructions for your exact model explicitly require it. Otherwise, remove and reinstall the driver package.
Fix 7: Identify which program is requesting the file
The missing-file dialog may come from a Canon utility, a printer-related process, or an old application that still references a removed printer. The displayed DLL is not necessarily the executable that installed it.

To inspect an existing copy:
- Open File Explorer.

cnbic4_6.dll. - Right-click a result and select Properties.
- Check the Details and Digital Signatures tabs if present.
- Note the folder path and file description.
A copy under a Canon printer-driver directory is more consistent with the expected role than an unexplained copy in a random application folder. Do not overwrite a suspicious copy simply because its name matches.
Fix 8: Use System Restore only after normal driver repair fails
System Restore is appropriate when the problem began immediately after a driver installation, Windows update, or system change and reinstalling Canon software did not help.

System Restore changes drivers, applications, and settings. It does not provide a clean replacement for an individual DLL, so it should not be the first step.
Avoid random DLL downloads
Do not download cnbic4_6.dll from a random DLL repository. The file may contain malware, belong to the wrong Canon package, use the wrong architecture, or be an incompatible version. Even a genuine-looking replacement may leave the rest of the driver installation damaged.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The safe sources are the official Canon support page for the exact printer model and Microsoft’s Windows Update or printer guidance. If you no longer use the Canon printer, uninstalling the obsolete Canon software may be the correct solution instead of restoring the file.
Frequently asked questions
Is cnbic4_6.dll a Windows file?
It appears to be a Canon printer-driver component, not a core Microsoft Windows DLL. Conflicting third-party metadata about paths and operating systems should not be treated as proof that it belongs to Windows.
Which Canon printer installed it?
There is no verified universal printer model or installer associated with every copy. Identify the exact printer and reinstall its current Canon package.
Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Those folders are not universal destinations for DLLs, and copying an arbitrary driver file there can cause conflicts. Let the Canon installer place the file in the correct driver location.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWill Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix the error?
There is no evidence that this file belongs to those runtimes. Installing them solely because the filename ends in .dll is unlikely to repair a Canon printer-driver installation.
What if the printer is no longer installed?
Remove the obsolete Canon printer and uninstall its related software. If another program still requests the file, identify that program before deleting anything else.
What should I provide when requesting further help?
Include the exact error message, printer model, Windows edition and build, full file path, calling executable, architecture, and whether Windows Security quarantined the file. Those details distinguish a damaged driver from a missing dependency or stale software reference.
