The file is associated with Canon printer software and may appear in Windows DriverStore as part of a Canon driver package. It is not a general Windows runtime, Visual C++ component, DirectX file, or .NET file. The exact Canon printer model cannot be identified from the filename alone because related driver packages can support multiple models.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the Canon printer package
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is the safest and most likely solution. A proper Canon installation restores the DLL together with its INF file, catalog, dependencies, and printer configuration.
Identify the printer model
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Look for the Canon printer and record its complete model name.
- If the printer is not listed, check its label or the original Canon software entry under Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
Do not guess the model from cnbmr284.dll. Public records associate the file with the Canon prnca00b.inf driver family, but they do not establish one definitive printer model.

Download the correct Canon package
- Open Canon’s official Software and Drivers support portal.
- Search for the exact printer model.
- Choose Windows as the operating system.
- Select the installed Windows version.
- Download the recommended printer driver or complete software package.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Try printing and launch the Canon utility that previously displayed the error.
If the error disappears and the printer works, the repair is complete. Do not copy an isolated DLL into System32 or SysWOW64.
Remove and reinstall the printer if repair fails
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall obsolete Canon printer software associated with the old installation.
- Restart the computer.
- Run the current Canon installer again.
- Add the printer when prompted.
Microsoft also documents the remove-and-reinstall process in its guide to fixing printer connection and printing problems. Windows may obtain a compatible printer driver through Windows Update, but the exact Canon package is preferable when Canon provides one for the model and Windows version.
Fix 2: Update or reinstall the printer driver
Time needed: 10–15 minutes
A damaged or mismatched driver can produce messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because cnbmr284.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading cnbmr284.dll.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located.”
- “cnbmr284.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
Use Device Manager to check the printer-related driver, but prefer Canon’s product-specific installer for the actual replacement.

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if present, Imaging devices.
- Find the Canon printer.
- Right-click it and select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if an update is installed.
- Test printing.
If Device Manager reports that the best driver is already installed, that does not prove the Canon package is intact. Return to Canon’s support portal and install the model-specific package manually.
If the printer remains broken:
- In Device Manager, right-click the Canon device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the Canon driver package again.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious copy of a driver file. A missing file can then cause an error when a Canon monitor or printer utility starts.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an action involving
cnbmr284.dll, a Canon printer component, or the related driver package. - Check the reported file path before taking action.
Do not restore the file merely because its name is correct. A DLL named cnbmr284.dll in a temporary folder, Downloads folder, or another user-writable location is not automatically trustworthy.
If the file was inside a legitimate Canon driver directory, reinstall the Canon package instead of keeping an isolated restored copy. If you suspect malware, run a full Microsoft Defender scan and allow the security product to remove suspicious files.
Fix 4: Repair Windows servicing components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use these commands when Windows reports broader file corruption, driver-store problems, or failed servicing operations. They are not a replacement for reinstalling a missing third-party Canon driver.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the printer again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies. If SFC mentions Canon files or prnca00b.inf but cannot repair them, reinstall the Canon driver package after the scan.
Repeatedly hunting through Windows components and running repair commands without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Fix 5: Remove an obsolete Canon startup component
Time needed: 10–15 minutes
If the error appears immediately after signing in, the printer may no longer be installed but an old Canon utility, status monitor, or print component is still starting with Windows.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Canon.
- Uninstall software belonging to a printer you no longer use.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an obsolete Canon monitor only if you have already removed the associated printer software or no longer need it.
- Restart and check whether the message returns.
Do not disable a Canon component blindly if the printer is still in use. Repair the current driver first.
If the startup message identifies a particular executable, note its full path. A Canon executable under an installed Canon program directory is consistent with a leftover printer component. An executable from a temporary or unknown location deserves a malware scan and should not be repaired by downloading a DLL.

Fix 6: Check architecture and package compatibility
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Public file records do not agree on whether every copy of cnbmr284.dll is 32-bit or 64-bit. One historical record describes a 32-bit copy, while another associates the file with an amd64 DriverStore path. This means you should not replace the file based on an architecture label found on a download page.
Check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Check System type under Device specifications.
Then install the driver offered for the exact printer and Windows version. Do not copy a 32-bit file into a 64-bit location or place a 64-bit file into a 32-bit application directory. Do not put separate downloaded copies in both System32 and SysWOW64.
A “not designed to run on Windows” message commonly points to a mismatched, damaged, or incomplete driver package. Reinstalling the correct Canon package is safer than trying to force one DLL to load.
Do not register this file with Regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A printer-driver component is not normally repaired by self-registration.
If you run:
regsvr32 cnbmr284.dll
and receive “DllRegisterServer was not found,” that indicates registration is the wrong approach. It does not mean you need another copy of the DLL. Install the Canon driver package instead. Microsoft describes the command’s registration behavior in its regsvr32 documentation.

Downloading cnbmr284.dll from a random DLL repository is risky because the file may contain malware, belong to a different Canon model, use the wrong architecture, or come from an incompatible driver revision. It also leaves the printer’s INF, catalog, registry configuration, and related files unrepaired.
Use the Canon support page for the exact printer model and Windows version. Use Microsoft’s Windows Update and printer troubleshooting guidance when the manufacturer package is unavailable.

Why the error happens
The most likely causes are:
- An incomplete or damaged Canon printer-driver installation.
- Old Canon software left behind after a printer upgrade or uninstall.
- A driver package mismatch involving the printer model, Windows version, or architecture.
- Corruption in Windows DriverStore or servicing metadata.
- Antivirus quarantine.
- Disk corruption or malware.
- A failed Windows update or printer-driver removal.
The file may be stored in DriverStore, but that does not make it a Microsoft-authored Windows component. Current Windows versions may also use a different Canon package from older Windows releases.

Is cnbmr284.dll legitimate?
Yes. Public file metadata identifies it as part of Canon Inkjet Printer Driver software. Its legitimacy still depends on the file’s location, signature, and the Canon package that installed it.
Is it part of Windows?
