Before changing anything, note which program reports the cnbp_336.dll error, when it appears, and whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit. Also check whether the problem started after removing a Canon printer, updating Windows, installing a driver, running disk cleanup, or an antivirus quarantine.
The safest fix is usually to reinstall the complete Canon printer package for the exact printer model. Do not begin by downloading a standalone DLL, copying it into System32, or running regsvr32.
What is cnbp_336.dll?
cnbp_336.dll is associated with Canon’s legacy IJ and PIXMA printer-driver packages. Public file records describe it as part of the Canon Inkjet Printer Driver, and package listings place it alongside Canon files such as CNBP_333.DLL and CNBP_334.DLL.
It is not a general Windows component, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET file, or ordinary Windows API library. Windows may stage the Canon package in the Driver Store or another protected driver location, but that does not make this DLL a Windows system file.

The filename alone cannot identify the exact printer or program requesting it. The strongest documented association is with Canon printer packages using names such as prnca00i.inf, including the Canon MP630 family. If you own a different Canon printer, use that model’s package rather than assuming an MP630 driver is suitable.
What the error message tells you
You may see wording such as:
- “The program can’t start because cnbp_336.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because cnbp_336.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading cnbp_336.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library cnbp_336.dll.”
- “cnbp_336.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Cannot register cnbp_336.dll.”
These messages do not prove that the named DLL itself is absent. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependent file is missing, the package is damaged, or the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit component is being loaded.
If the message names a Canon utility, printer monitor, scanner application, or print-related process, follow the Canon driver steps below. If it names a game or unrelated application, investigate that requesting program first. This DLL is not normally a game dependency.
Fix 1: Identify the printer and Windows architecture
Find the affected Canon device
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Look for Canon printers, including printers marked offline or disconnected.
- Select a Canon printer and note its full model name.
If no Canon printer appears, continue to the next section. An old Canon utility, printer queue, or startup entry may still be trying to load the driver.
Check whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Right-click Start and select System.
- Find System type under Device specifications.
- Note whether it says 64-bit operating system or 32-bit operating system.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit applications, but printer-driver components still need to match the driver package and supported installation environment. Do not mix DLLs from x86 and x64 packages or from different Canon releases.
Fix 2: Reinstall the complete Canon printer driver
This is the most likely solution when the file is missing, damaged, removed by cleanup software, or left behind after an incomplete driver update.
- Disconnect the Canon printer’s USB cable if it is connected. For a network printer, note its network details first.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices, then Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer.
- Select Remove and confirm.
- Go back to Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Installed apps.
- Remove Canon printer utilities or driver packages that clearly belong to the affected device.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Canon’s support site in your browser.
- Search for the exact printer model.
- Select the package identified as the printer or MP Driver.
- Choose the package matching your Windows architecture and supported Windows version.
- Download and run the complete installer.
- Connect or select the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows again if the installer asks you to do so.
For the Canon MP630 family, Canon’s legacy support material identifies an MP630 series MP Driver package in separate x86 and x64 versions. That example does not make the MP630 driver appropriate for other Canon models, and Canon’s older support information does not establish current compatibility for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 configuration.
A complete installer places the DLL where the Canon print driver expects it and registers the printer through the driver package. It also restores related files that a standalone DLL download would leave missing.

The repair worked if the original Canon utility opens, the printer appears under Printers & scanners, and a test page prints without the error.
If the installer refuses to run, first remove the old Canon printer and restart. If the same error returns, continue with the Driver Store and Windows repair steps below rather than copying a DLL manually.

Fix 3: Remove stale printer entries and driver leftovers
A removed printer can leave a print queue or utility that still requests cnbp_336.dll.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
printmanagement.mscand press Enter. - Expand Print Servers.
- Expand your computer name.
- Select Drivers.
- Look for an old Canon driver associated with the removed printer.
- Right-click it and select Remove Driver Package if that option is available.
- Expand Printers and remove stale Canon queues.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the correct Canon package.
Some editions of Windows do not include Print Management. If the command does not open, use Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners to remove old queues, then open Device Manager.
In Device Manager:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Print queues and Printers.
- Right-click an obsolete Canon entry.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers to remove the driver, select that option only when you are sure the device is obsolete.
- Restart and install the current package for the printer model.
Do not manually edit files inside C:WindowsSystem32DriverStore. The Driver Store is a protected package location, and removing individual files can damage other driver installations.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine a driver file after a detection or an interrupted installation.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries related to Canon software or the time the error began.
- If a Canon file was quarantined, verify that it came from the official Canon installer.
- Prefer reinstalling the signed Canon package instead of restoring the individual file.
- Run a full scan if the detection is unfamiliar.
Restore a quarantined item only when you trust its source and the detection is clearly a false positive. A DLL obtained from an unofficial site should not be restored merely because its filename matches.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components when staging is damaged
DISM and SFC are useful when Windows servicing, the component store, or a staged driver installation is damaged. They are not replacements for a missing Canon installer package.

- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Canon printer or utility again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. These commands may help if Windows’ staged components are damaged, but they normally will not recreate a missing third-party Canon package.

Fix 6: Check Windows Update and optional drivers
Windows Update may offer a compatible printer driver, although older Canon models may only have legacy packages.

- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates if the section exists.
- Install a Canon printer driver only when the model matches your device.
- Restart Windows and test the printer.
You can also use Device Manager:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the Canon device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Do not accept a driver for another Canon model just because it contains the same filename.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the error began immediately after a driver update, software installation, or cleanup operation, System Restore may undo the change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove drivers and applications installed after the selected restore point. Reinstall the correct Canon package afterward if necessary.

Avoid DLL download sites websites and random forum attachments. A copied file can contain malware, belong to a different Canon build, use the wrong architecture, or depend on other files that are still missing. It can also conceal the real problem: a damaged printer package, stale startup entry, or broken print queue.
Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 by default. Printer DLLs belong to their driver package and may be loaded from the Driver Store or Canon print-driver directories.
regsvr32 is also normally inappropriate. It is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Canon printer drivers are installed through INF-based driver packages, not repaired by routinely registering an individual driver DLL.

Windows Features are not normally relevant to this error. Enabling .NET Framework, DirectPlay, or another optional feature will not restore a missing Canon printer package unless a separate application has independently identified that feature as missing.
If no Canon printer is installed
If the error remains after removing Canon software:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Canon utilities and remove obsolete entries.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an old Canon startup utility.
- Check Task Scheduler for an identifiable Canon task and disable it if the software is no longer installed.
- Restart Windows.
If the popup names an unrelated executable, inspect that program rather than placing the Canon DLL beside it. A stale reference may be harmless leftover software, or the requesting program may be suspicious and deserve a malware scan.
FAQ
Is cnbp_336.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with Canon printer-driver packages. Windows may stage that package in protected driver locations, but the DLL is not a general-purpose Windows component.
Which printer installed it?
The filename alone cannot prove the exact model. Documented package evidence connects it with legacy Canon IJ packages, including MP630-related files. Identify the printer in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and install that model’s package.
Should I download the DLL separately?
No. Reinstall the complete Canon driver from Canon’s official support pages. A standalone file may be unsafe, mismatched, or insufficient.

Only when protected Windows components or the Windows component store are damaged. SFC does not reliably restore a missing Canon driver package.
Why does the message say a dependent module is missing?
Windows may be unable to load a required dependency, or the Canon file may be incompatible with the current driver environment. Reinstall the matching complete package instead of replacing one DLL.
What if the printer still works but a login popup appears?
Remove obsolete Canon utilities, startup entries, scheduled tasks, and printer queues. The printer can continue working even while an old utility tries to load a file that was removed.
When should I contact Canon?
Contact Canon after confirming the model, architecture, driver package, and Windows version, especially if the official installer fails or the printer is not supported by the current Windows release.
