libigmath.dll is an application file, not a Windows system component. It is commonly associated with Intrinsic Graphics’ Alchemy graphics and math middleware, which appeared in older software such as Google SketchUp installations, Google Earth-era packages and Pirates of the Burning Sea.
Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches what you see:
- The error names a specific old program or game: repair, verify or reinstall that program first.
- The message also mentions
MSVCR80.dll,MSVCP80.dllor a side-by-side assembly: install the official Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 runtime with the architecture the application requires. - The program worked until antivirus software, disk cleanup or a security scan ran: inspect Windows Security protection history.
- The file exists, but the message says it is damaged, not designed for Windows or that an entry point is missing: restore the complete matching DLL set from the original installer.
- The program crashes while starting OpenGL rather than reporting a missing file: check the graphics driver and application compatibility.
- Several unrelated programs have begun reporting DLL errors: investigate Windows corruption, disk problems or malware instead of replacing one application file.
Do not begin by copying a downloaded DLL into System32, SysWOW64 or the program folder. That approach can introduce malware, create an architecture mismatch and leave the real dependency problem unresolved.

What libigmath.dll is
The filename is often shown as libIGMath.dll because Windows error messages may preserve the file’s original capitalization. The IG naming is associated with Intrinsic Graphics, while “Math Library OpenGL Release” is the description found in historical application file inventories.
It is a 32-bit graphics-related application component found alongside other Alchemy files, including names such as libIGCore.dll, libIGGfx.dll, libIGAttrs.dll and libIGUtils.dll. It is not part of Windows, DirectX, .NET or the modern Visual C++ runtime.
There is no single universal version, size or hash for every copy. Different applications may have shipped different compatible sets. A copy from SketchUp, Google Earth-era software or an unrelated game should not be mixed with another program’s files.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the parent application
This is the most likely solution because libigmath.dll belongs to the program that installed it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIdentify the affected program
- Read the complete error dialog, including the program name in its title bar.
- Right-click the application shortcut and select Properties.
- Check the Target field and note the executable path.
- Open the folder shown in Start in, if present.
- Look for the program’s launcher, updater or uninstall entry.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and search for the same program.
If the error appears when starting a game, check the game library rather than treating the DLL as a Windows file. If the error appears only after opening an old shortcut, the shortcut may point to an incomplete or moved installation.
Use the program’s repair option
For a traditional Windows application:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the application’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If the application has its own launcher, open it and look for Repair, Scan, Verify, Restore files or Check installation. Close the program before running the repair.
For a Steam game:
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to complete, then launch the game from Steam.
A successful repair restores the complete, matching group of application files. It should not require manually registering libigmath.dll.

Reinstall when repair fails
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings → Apps → Installed apps or its official uninstaller.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall from the original official installer, original media or official game platform.
- Apply the program’s official updates.
- Start it before copying back optional plugins or custom files.
If reinstalling fixes the program temporarily and the DLL disappears again, check antivirus history before reinstalling repeatedly.
Fix 2: Restore a quarantined file safely
Windows Security or another antivirus product may have removed a legacy DLL. Do not restore it automatically just because the program needs it.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Find the detection associated with the affected program.
- Confirm that the file path belongs to the legitimate application installation.
- Scan the installer, application folder and system before restoring anything.
- Restore the file only if you have confirmed its origin and trust the installation.
Microsoft warns that restoring a detected file can expose the device when the detection is genuine. If the file is restored and immediately removed again, review the security product’s logs and reinstall the application from a known-good official source instead of disabling protection broadly.
Fix 3: Install Visual C++ 2005 SP1 for dependency errors
A missing libigmath.dll message can actually indicate that Windows found the file but could not load one of its dependencies. This commonly happens when the dialog also names MSVCR80.dll, MSVCP80.dll or a side-by-side assembly.
Install the official Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package, not a loose copy of the missing runtime file.
For most old programs:
- Use x86 for a 32-bit application, even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
- Use x64 only for a 64-bit application.
- Do not assume installing the newest Visual C++ package replaces the 2005 runtime. Older Visual C++ runtimes install side by side.
To determine the application architecture, check the program’s documentation or installer. If that information is unavailable, the age and installation structure can provide clues, but do not mix x86 and x64 files manually.
After installing the runtime, restart Windows and launch the affected application. If the same error remains, return to the application repair step because the Alchemy DLL set may still be missing or mismatched.

Fix 4: Check for a wrong or damaged DLL set
Different loader messages point to different problems:
- “Was not found” or “is missing”: the file may have been deleted or never installed.
- “Specified module could not be found”:
libigmath.dllmay exist, but a dependency it needs is absent. - “Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error”: the file may be corrupt, the wrong architecture or from an incompatible release.
- “Procedure entry point could not be located”: related DLLs may come from different versions.
Open the application folder and check whether the file exists beside the program executable. Do not replace it with a file from another application. The surrounding libIG* files must come from the same installer or game update.

If you have a backup of the complete application folder, restore the entire matching set rather than one DLL. If you do not, run the official repair or reinstall procedure.
Fix 5: Check Windows Features only when the error points there
libigmath.dll is not a Windows optional feature. Enabling random features will not normally restore it.
You can still check whether the application specifically requires an older Windows component:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeaturesand press Enter. - Review the available Windows Features.
- Enable a feature only when the application’s official documentation requires it.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable legacy components as a substitute for reinstalling the parent application. Windows Features cannot recreate a missing third-party Alchemy DLL.

SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate libigmath.dll, because this is an application-bundled file.

If you want to avoid repeatedly hunting through repair results and guessing which Windows component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds; repairs are performed by the full version. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when its own libigmath.dll is missing.
Do not keep repeating SFC and DISM when only one old application fails. That pattern points back to the application installation.

A graphics driver is not the normal solution for a missing libigmath.dll. Consider it when the file exists and the application crashes during OpenGL initialization, displays rendering errors or reports unsupported graphics hardware.
Check the driver in Device Manager
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Properties and open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date and version.
- Use Update driver or obtain the driver from the computer or graphics manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Avoid driver websites that offer unrelated DLL files. If the application is very old, its OpenGL requirements may not be compatible with modern hardware even after a driver update.
If you want to avoid identifying stale drivers one device at a time, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; installation of updates is handled by the full version. A driver update will not replace a missing application DLL, so repair or reinstall the parent program first.

If the program worked until a cleanup utility, update, driver installation or other software change, System Restore may undo the change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type

Why regsvr32 is not the fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 libigmath.dll
Runtime and graphics libraries are normally loaded by their parent application. They are not usually COM or ActiveX libraries that register themselves with Windows. You may receive an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found, or registration may appear to succeed without solving the loader failure.
regsvr32 is appropriate only when the software vendor specifically identifies a DLL as a self-registering COM component and provides registration instructions. That does not describe the normal role of libigmath.dll.
If the original program is obsolete
When no current official installer is available, use the original installation media, a verified backup or an official distribution already associated with the software. Preserve the complete application directory rather than extracting individual DLLs.
If the program still cannot run, record:
- The exact error wording.
- The executable name and installation path.
- Whether
libigmath.dllexists in that folder. - Any additional DLL named by the dialog.
- Recent antivirus detections or system changes.
- Whether other applications fail.
There is no confirmed current standalone Intrinsic Graphics installer that should be used to obtain this file. A random DLL repository cannot establish the file’s provenance, compatibility or safety.
FAQ
Is libigmath.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an application-bundled graphics and math component associated with older software using Intrinsic Graphics’ Alchemy technology.
Which programs may contain it?
Historical inventories associate it with older Google SketchUp installations, Google Earth-era software and Pirates of the Burning Sea. These associations do not mean every current release of those products uses the file.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Keep it with the application that installed it. Copying it into a Windows system directory can affect unrelated programs and does not repair missing dependencies.
Why does Windows mention libigmath.dll when the file is present?
The loader may be unable to load one of the DLL’s dependencies. Check for MSVCR80.dll, MSVCP80.dll, side-by-side errors and mismatched application files.
Will installing DirectX or .NET fix it?
Not normally. Those components are different from the Alchemy DLL set. Install them only when the affected application specifically requires them.
What is the safest fix?
Repair, verify or reinstall the parent application from its original official source, then install the matching Visual C++ 2005 SP1 runtime if the error identifies that dependency.
