cnbsd3.dll is a Canon printer-driver component, so the safest fix is usually to remove the damaged Canon installation and install the correct driver for your printer. Do not download a replacement DLL and copy it into System32; that can leave the underlying driver package, dependency, or printer queue broken.
What this file actually does
cnbsd3.dll is associated with older Canon Inkjet Printer Driver packages. It is not a general Windows runtime, Microsoft Visual C++ file, DirectX component, or .NET library.
The file is normally involved in the software layer between Windows and a Canon printer. Depending on the model and package, related driver files may be staged in the Windows Driver Store or used by the print spooler. Historical x64 driver inventories show copies under paths similar to:
C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository...Amd64CNBSD3.DLL
C:WindowsSystem32spooldriversx643
Those historical locations do not prove that every current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation uses the same path or package. They do explain why a missing file can appear after a printer-driver update, failed installation, Windows upgrade, printer removal, or antivirus quarantine.

The filename alone cannot identify your exact Canon printer model. Before repairing anything, note:
- The full error message
- Whether it appears while printing, installing the printer, starting Windows, or launching another application
- The exact Canon model currently installed or previously connected
- Whether Windows is 32-bit, 64-bit, or ARM-based
- What changed immediately before the problem
- Where Windows found the file, if a security alert or diagnostic tool displays a path
A message saying “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. It can also mean that cnbsd3.dll is present but one of its dependencies cannot load.

Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer driver
This is the most likely solution because cnbsd3.dll belongs to a printer-driver package, not to a standalone Windows runtime.
1. Identify the correct package
Find the exact model printed on the printer or listed in Windows. Do not select a driver merely because it contains “Canon Inkjet” or looks close to the model name.

Canon packages may be labeled MP Drivers or use a model-specific printer-driver name. The package can contain printer and related scanning or fax components, depending on the model.
If the Canon model is discontinued, check whether Canon provides a driver for your current Windows version. A legacy printer may work only with a supported generic or inbox driver.
2. Remove the printer
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the Canon printer.
- Select Remove and confirm.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the Canon printer.
- Select Remove device.
Disconnect the USB cable if the printer is connected. For a network printer, leave it powered off temporarily.
3. Remove an obsolete driver package if necessary
Removing the printer object does not always remove its driver files.

- Press
Win + R. - Type
control printersand press Enter. - Select any printer, then choose Print server properties on the toolbar.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the obsolete Canon driver.
- Choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package when offered.
- Restart Windows.
Only remove a package that clearly belongs to the affected Canon model. Do not delete an unknown driver because its name contains oem or because it is old.
4. Install the package cleanly
Run the Canon installer you downloaded for the exact model. Reconnect the USB cable only when the installer requests it. For a network printer, follow the installer’s discovery or network setup process rather than adding a generic printer first.
Test a page after installation, then restart Windows once. If the error no longer appears and printing works, the damaged driver package was the cause.
If the installer fails again, record the exact message. Repeating the same installer without removing the stale package usually does not repair a corrupted Driver Store entry.

Fix 2: Check Windows architecture and legacy-driver compatibility
A driver built for the wrong architecture cannot be loaded simply by copying the file elsewhere.
To check your system type:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Check System type.
Windows may identify the system as x64-based, x86-based, or ARM-based. Choose the Canon package that matches both the printer model and the supported Windows architecture. Canon documentation separates driver folders and installation handling by architecture.
Do not assume that an x64 copy can be used on a 32-bit installation, or that an x86 file belongs in SysWOW64 on a 64-bit system. Those folders are part of Windows’ compatibility design, not general storage locations for downloaded DLLs.

On supported modern Windows versions, protected print mode can also remove unsupported manufacturer printer software. If the problem began after changing print settings or updating Windows, review Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and the available modern print options. A printer that depends on an old Canon package may need a supported replacement driver or, for very old hardware, replacement hardware.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Windows Security or another antivirus product may have isolated a damaged or suspicious copy.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections related to
cnbsd3.dll, Canon software, or the printer driver. - Expand the detection and inspect its path and details.
Do not restore the file merely because the filename looks familiar. A genuine filename does not make every copy genuine. Restore it only if it belongs to a verified Canon installation and your security software has cleared it.
In most cases, reinstalling the complete Canon package is safer than restoring one quarantined DLL. The installer can stage the driver, restore its catalog information, and place related dependencies correctly.
If the file was found in an unrelated application folder, a temporary directory, or a location created by an unknown installer, leave it isolated and run a full scan. The Canon-associated filename alone is not proof that the copy is legitimate.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when Windows component corruption, a damaged inbox printer component, or a failed update may be involved. They will not reliably reconstruct every third-party Canon driver file.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses. SFC then checks protected Windows files and repairs files it can match to that source. Restart Windows after both commands complete, then retry the Canon driver installation.

Fix 5: Inspect the print driver and spooler
If reinstalling appears successful but the error returns during printing, an old package may still be active.
- Press
Win + R. - Type
control printersand press Enter. - Select a printer.
- Open Print server properties.
- Review the Drivers tab for duplicate or obsolete Canon entries.
- Open Device Manager from the Start menu.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and any Canon-related category.
- Right-click the affected device and choose Uninstall device only when you have confirmed it belongs to the failed installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current Canon package again.

pnputil /enum-drivers /files
Look for a package that clearly belongs to Canon. Do not delete an oem#.inf package based only on its number. Confirm its provider, class, and associated printer before taking any removal action.
Fix 6: Remove an orphaned Canon installation
If the error appears at startup but you no longer own the printer, the missing file may be requested by an old Canon utility or stale printer object.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Canon software.
- Remove utilities that clearly belong to the old printer.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Remove the old Canon printer object.
- Use Print server properties > Drivers to remove its confirmed driver package.
- Restart Windows.
Do not remove unrelated imaging, scanner, or camera software unless you have confirmed it belongs to the same printer installation. If the startup message disappears after removing the orphaned package, there is no reason to restore cnbsd3.dll.
Fix 7: Use System Restore only for a recent change
System Restore can help when a driver update or Windows change caused the failure and a restore point predates it.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore and restart Windows.
This does not replace a proper Canon installation. If the restore does not correct the printer or causes the error to return after another update, install the supported Canon package instead.
Why regsvr32 usually will not help
Do not run:
regsvr32 cnbsd3.dll
as a generic repair step. regsvr32 is intended for self-registering OLE and ActiveX DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A printer-driver module generally is not repaired that way, and the command may create a second error instead.

Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor’s instructions explicitly identify that particular DLL as a self-registering component. For cnbsd3.dll, repair the Canon driver package instead.
Why downloading the DLL is unsafe
A standalone DLL download can have the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, altered contents, or missing dependencies. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, a game folder, or an arbitrary application directory also bypasses the Driver Store’s package validation and catalog handling.

There is no verified standalone Canon download for cnbsd3.dll. If the file belongs to a specific Canon package, reinstalling that package is the correct repair.
FAQ
Is cnbsd3.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with older Canon printer-driver packages. It may appear in Windows-managed driver or spooler locations, but it is not a general-purpose Windows library.
Do I need Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not based on this filename alone. The normal repair is the Canon printer driver. Install another runtime only if the complete error identifies a separate missing runtime component.
Can I use a file from another computer?
No. The other computer may use a different printer model, architecture, package revision, or dependency set. Reinstall the complete driver instead.
