Some third-party metadata describes an older 32-bit Windows/NT file and shows Canon copyright metadata from the late 2000s. Treat that as historical file metadata, not as a universal version specification. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run 32-bit printer software, so the relevant match is between the application or driver package and its required architecture.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the exact Canon printer driver
This is the most likely fix.
Identify the printer
Find the model on the printer label, its control panel, the original purchase record, or the existing Windows printer entry. Do not assume that a generic name such as “Canon printer” identifies the correct package.
Also record:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11
- 32-bit or 64-bit Windows
- The exact error text
- The executable that displays the error
- Any file path shown in the dialog
- Whether Windows Security quarantined the file
To check Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Check System type.
Remove the existing printer
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Select Remove and confirm.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Select Remove device.
Restart Windows after removal.
If the printer remains listed or the error returns, remove its driver package through Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers or Print queues.
- Right-click the Canon device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm removal.
- Restart Windows.
Some systems show an option to remove the driver package as well. Use that option only for the obsolete Canon device you are repairing, not for unrelated printers.
Install the correct Canon package
Use Canon’s official support portal, select the exact printer model, and choose the Windows version and architecture shown in System type. Download the printer driver or complete setup package supplied for that model.
Then:
- Close printing applications.
- Disconnect the USB printer if the installer requests it.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Reconnect the printer only when instructed.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Select the printer and print a test page.
The repair worked if the test page prints and the original application or Canon utility starts without the cnbss3.dll message. If the installer fails, remove the partially installed printer again and confirm that you selected the exact model and supported architecture.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine and the file path
Security software may remove a damaged or suspicious driver file. Do not immediately restore it.

Fix 3: Check for an incompatible or incomplete legacy driver
Older Canon software can remain after a Windows upgrade, printer replacement, system restore, or disk clone. The old utility may still run at startup even though its driver files are gone.
Check these areas:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Search for Canon utilities and printer software.
- Uninstall software belonging to the old or incorrect printer.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the supported package for the current printer model.
If multiple Canon printers are installed, repair the package for the printer or utility named by the error. Installing a driver for a different Canon model may leave the required component missing.
A 64-bit Windows installation may still use a 32-bit legacy printer component. Do not place a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit package, or the reverse. Match the driver package to the application and printer rather than copying files based only on the Windows label.

On Windows 11 ARM devices, a manufacturer installer may not work as expected. Add the printer through Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Add device instead, or use Add manually when automatic discovery fails.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
SFC and DISM do not normally restore a third-party Canon driver DLL. Use them when other Windows components are failing, Windows Update is damaged, or the Canon installer cannot run because Windows itself appears corrupted.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Canon driver installation.
Success means DISM or SFC reports that corruption was repaired, and the Canon installer or related applications now run. If both commands complete without resolving the error, return to the Canon driver removal and reinstall procedure rather than repeatedly running system repair commands.

Fix 5: Use Windows Update and Device Manager
Windows Update may provide a compatible printer driver, especially when the original Canon package is unavailable.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Check for printer or driver updates.
- Install relevant updates and restart.
You can also inspect the printer in Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the relevant Canon entry.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
If Windows installs only a generic printer driver, printing may work while Canon utilities continue to fail. In that case, install Canon’s complete package for the exact model.

Do not download cnbss3.dll by itself
Standalone DLL download sites cannot reliably establish which Canon model, architecture, or package version your computer requires. A replacement may be the wrong version, incompatible with the calling program, modified, or unsafe. It may also leave the real problem untouched, such as a missing dependency, broken printer registration, or incomplete driver installation.
Do not copy cnbss3.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- The application folder
- The Canon driver folder
The safe source is the official Canon driver package selected by printer model and Windows version. Microsoft also recommends Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official website for printer drivers.
Why regsvr32 is usually wrong
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering OLE and ActiveX DLLs. A printer-driver support DLL may not export DllRegisterServer.
Running a command such as:
regsvr32 cnbss3.dll
can therefore produce “the module was loaded but the entry point was not found,” or another misleading error. It does not rebuild a Canon printer installation and should not be a default repair step. Use it only if Canon documentation or a qualified administrator specifically confirms that the relevant component is self-registering.
If the error still appears
Collect the following before making further changes:
- Exact error text
- Program or executable that triggers it
- DLL path shown in the dialog
- Canon printer model
- Windows edition and architecture
- Whether the issue began after an update, uninstall, restore, or clone
- Windows Security detection details
- Canon package name used during reinstall

- Open Task Scheduler and inspect tasks clearly associated with old Canon software.
- Check Installed apps for unused Canon utilities.
- Restart and confirm whether the message disappears.
Use System Restore only if the problem began immediately after a driver or system change and a current Canon package cannot be installed. It is a fallback, not a replacement for a clean driver installation.
