You may see “The program can’t start because nlslexicons001a.dll is missing from your computer,” “nlslexicons001a.dll was not found,” “Error loading nlslexicons001a.dll,” or “Failed to load nlslexicons001a.dll.” nlslexicons001a.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL associated with language, locale and linguistic-support components.

The safest fix is not to download a replacement DLL. Install pending Windows updates, repair the Windows component store with DISM, then run System File Checker. If only one old program fails, repair or reinstall that program from its official installer after checking whether security software quarantined a required file.

What nlslexicons001a.dll is

The file is recorded as Microsoft Neutral Natural Language Server Data and Code. It belongs to Windows language and National Language Support infrastructure, which supports locale-sensitive text, sorting, date and time formatting, and related language behavior.

Public Windows file records associate it mainly with Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 or 8.1-era system files. Recorded versions include 6.0.6000.16386, 6.1.7600.16385, 6.2.9200.16384 and 6.3.9600.16384. The commonly recorded size is about 6,014,976 bytes, or 5.74 MiB.

Those inventory records do not make a third-party DLL download safe. They also do not prove that a particular game, launcher or application is the usual cause of the error.

Microsoft does not provide a verified standalone download for this filename. It is not established as part of Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET or a graphics-driver package.

Why an application reports a Windows DLL error

An application can display the error even when the missing file belongs to Windows. Programs call Windows language and system components, so a damaged Windows file, incomplete update or missing dependency can stop the application during startup.

“The specified module could not be found” is also ambiguous. It can mean that the named DLL is absent, but it can instead mean that a dependency required by that DLL or by the application is missing.

The problem may involve:

  • A damaged or deleted Windows system file
  • An incomplete Windows update
  • Antivirus quarantine or accidental cleanup
  • Damaged language components
  • A damaged legacy application
  • A missing dependency
  • Malware or disk corruption

Start with Windows repair before attempting manual file replacement.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

Windows servicing updates can restore or repair operating-system components.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Install all available updates.
  4. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  5. Launch the affected program again.

On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then select Check for updates.

If Windows Update fails, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance, then continue with DISM and SFC below. Do not assume that a failed update means you should find the DLL on a download site.

Fix 2: Run DISM, then SFC

Microsoft recommends repairing the component store with Deployment Image Servicing and Management before scanning protected files with System File Checker.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the command to finish.
  2. Leave the Command Prompt open.

DISM uses Windows servicing resources to repair the component store. The process may appear to pause. Do not close the window while it is running.

Run System File Checker

After DISM completes, enter:

sfc /scannow

Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the affected application.

A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them, or that it did not find any integrity violations. If the message says SFC could not repair some files, run DISM again, install any remaining updates and repeat SFC once after restarting.

When repairing Windows manually, the difficult part is often knowing whether DISM or SFC actually changed the damaged component. Outbyte PC Repair can perform a free scan that shows what it finds; repair actions are handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows’ built-in DISM and SFC commands remain the appropriate first repair path.

Microsoft’s system-file repair instructions document this DISM-before-SFC sequence.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and the Recycle Bin

Security software or cleanup software may have removed a Windows component. This is a possibility, not proof of a known false positive for this particular filename.

Check antivirus history

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an entry involving nlslexicons001a.dll or a Windows system component.
  5. Do not restore the file automatically. First confirm that the detected path, publisher and digital signature identify it as a Microsoft Windows file.
  6. Run a full scan after addressing the detection.

If you use another antivirus product, open its quarantine or detection-history screen instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the Recycle Bin

Open the Recycle Bin and search for the filename. Restore it only if it is clearly the original Microsoft system file and was removed recently. A manually downloaded DLL with the same name is not a trustworthy replacement.

After any restoration, run DISM and SFC again. Those tools provide a safer way to validate and replace protected Windows files.

Fix 4: Check Windows language components

Because the file is associated with Windows language infrastructure, a damaged or removed language component can contribute to startup failures.

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
  2. Check the Preferred languages list.
  3. Select Add a language if the required Windows language is missing.
  4. Install the language and its available language features.
  5. Restart Windows and test the application.

On Windows 10, open Settings > Time & Language > Language, then add or reinstall the required language.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows language resources are delivered through Windows servicing and Feature on Demand mechanisms. Do not copy a similarly named file into the language folder from an unknown source. If language installation fails, return to Windows Update and run DISM followed by SFC.

Microsoft’s language overview explains how Windows language components are provided and serviced.

Fix 5: Repair or reinstall the affected application

If every other application works and only one old program reports the error, the application or its launcher may be damaged. The Windows DLL may be mentioned because the program requests it during startup.

  3. Select the affected application.
  4. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  5. Select Repair. If Repair is unavailable or does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.
  6. Restart Windows and test the program.

For a desktop application without a Repair option, uninstall it from Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features. Restart, then reinstall it using the developer’s official installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a game, use the launcher’s built-in Verify, Repair or Verify integrity function. If that does not restore the program, reinstall the game from its official launcher. Reinstalling the affected application is the definitive fix when its own files are damaged.

Do not place a downloaded copy of nlslexicons001a.dll into the application folder. That can create a version mismatch and may bypass Windows file protection.

Fix 6: Check for a missing dependency

If the error says “The specified module could not be found,” the named DLL may exist while another dependency is missing.

First, confirm whether the file exists in the Windows system directory. Do not use the folder name alone to decide whether the file is correct.

On 64-bit Windows:

  • System32 contains 64-bit system files.
  • SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.

The names are confusing, and a 32-bit application may need the 32-bit copy even on a 64-bit installation. Do not copy files between these folders manually.

If the failure occurs only in an older application, check the application developer’s official requirements and installer. Install only a runtime explicitly required by that program. Do not install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX or .NET solely because nlslexicons001a.dll appears in the message.

Fix 7: Check drivers only when the timing points to one

A driver is not an established owner or package for this DLL. Consider driver troubleshooting only if the error began immediately after a graphics, chipset, storage or other driver change, or if Windows shows separate device errors.

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the relevant device category.
  3. Right-click the device and select Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
  5. Use Update Driver or obtain the driver from the computer or device manufacturer.
  6. Restart Windows and retest.

If a recent driver update caused the problem, use Roll Back Driver when available, then restart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finding the correct driver manually can mean checking hardware IDs, manufacturer pages and architecture compatibility. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing detected driver issues; driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it is not a substitute for repairing Windows or reinstalling the affected application.

Fix 8: Use System Restore

Use System Restore if the problem began after a Windows update, application installation or driver change.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe and press Enter.
  3. Select Next.
  4. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  5. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  6. Review the changes.
  7. Select Next, then Finish.

System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal documents, but back up important files before proceeding.

Fix 9: Repair Windows without deleting apps and files

On supported Windows 11 installations, Microsoft provides a repair reinstall:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  3. Select Reinstall now.
  4. Follow the prompts.

This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files and settings. If the option is unavailable, use Windows recovery options or official installation media. Microsoft’s Windows repair-reinstall instructions explain the available path.

For older Windows installations, use trusted Microsoft recovery or installation media rather than sourcing an isolated legacy DLL. Microsoft provides complete Windows 10 installation media and Windows 11 installation media.

Why regsvr32 is not the fix

Do not run:

regsvr32 nlslexicons001a.dll

Simply because a webpage recommends it. Microsoft documents regsvr32 for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A data or resource DLL does not need to provide that interface.

The command can produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found,” without repairing the missing-file problem. Use DISM and SFC for Windows components instead.

FAQ

Is nlslexicons001a.dll a Microsoft file?

Yes. Records identify it as Microsoft Neutral Natural Language Server Data and Code, associated with Windows language and locale infrastructure.

Do I need Visual C++ Redistributable?

There is no verified evidence that this DLL belongs to Visual C++ Redistributable. Do not install that package solely because this filename appears.

Should I download the DLL from a DLL website?

No. An isolated download can contain malware, the wrong Windows version or the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture. It may also conceal the real problem, such as a damaged component store or missing dependency.

Should the file be in System32 or SysWOW64?

That depends on Windows architecture and the component involved. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Do not infer the required location from the folder name or copy the file manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the error occurs only in one legacy program?

Repair or reinstall that program from its official installer, and use the launcher’s file-verification feature when available. If Windows repair succeeds but the same program still fails, the application is the more likely repair target.

What if SFC cannot repair the file?

Run DISM again, install pending Windows updates and restart. If the problem persists, use System Restore, Windows recovery options or trusted installation media. On obsolete Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 systems, upgrading to a supported Windows release is safer than replacing an isolated legacy DLL.
