The file is associated with Canon Inkjet Printer Driver packages and may be stored inside Windows Driver Store folders. It is not a general Windows runtime such as DirectX, .NET, or the Visual C++ Redistributable.
Work through these fixes in order. Stop when the printer installs and the error no longer returns.
1. Identify the Canon printer and Windows architecture
Time needed: 5 minutes
Before downloading anything, identify which printer installation is requesting the file. The exact Canon model matters because cnbur.dll is delivered as part of a complete driver package, not as one universal download.

Windows + Ito open Settings. - Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Review the installed printers and note every Canon model.
- Select a Canon printer, if present, and check whether Windows displays an error or installation warning.
- If the printer is not listed, think back to the device you recently removed, reinstalled, or attempted to configure.
Now check the system architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Read System type.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
A 32-bit and 64-bit driver package are not interchangeable. An old Canon package may also have been designed for an earlier Windows release and may not work correctly on a current version.
Also record when the problem started. Useful clues include:
- Windows was reinstalled or upgraded.
- A Canon printer was removed.
- An old Canon driver installation failed.
- Antivirus software quarantined a driver file.
- Disk cleanup or manual Driver Store cleanup was performed.
- The error appears when printing, opening printer properties, or starting a Canon installer.
If the message appears when launching an unrelated program or game, do not assume that program owns the file. The program may be triggering a stale printer component or reporting a missing dependency.
2. Reinstall the exact Canon printer package
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
This is the most likely solution. Use Canon’s support site to search for the exact printer model, choose the installed Windows version and architecture, and download the listed Printer Driver, IJ Printer Driver, or complete setup package.

- Open Canon’s official support page in your browser.
- Search for the full printer model, including its series name.
- Select the matching product.
- Choose your Windows version.
- Select the appropriate 32-bit or 64-bit download when Canon provides that choice.
- Download the printer driver or full installation package.
- If the printer is connected by USB, disconnect it unless Canon’s installer says to leave it connected.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Follow the prompts to remove or repair the existing installation if that option appears.
- Restart Windows when installation finishes.
- Reconnect the printer or add it again through Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Print a test page.
The repair worked if the installer completes without a DLL error, the Canon printer appears under Printers & scanners, and a test page prints.
If the installer refuses to proceed because an older package is still present, remove the failed printer entry first:

- Select the affected Canon printer.
- Select Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the current Canon installer again.
Do not delete random files from C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository. Windows Driver Store packages should be installed and removed through normal driver-management mechanisms.

3. Check Windows Update for a compatible printer driver
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
If Canon no longer lists your printer, Windows Update may provide a compatible driver.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Look for a Canon printer entry.
- Select the relevant update and choose Download & install.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners and add the printer again.
If no driver appears, use the Microsoft Update Catalog and search for the printer model or Canon printer. Match the package carefully to the printer series and Windows architecture.
A Microsoft-provided package may install the printer successfully even if Canon’s older full utility package is no longer available. It may not include every Canon scanning or maintenance feature, so use the Canon package when it is still supported.
4. Remove a stale Canon driver and printer queue
Time needed: 10 minutes
A removed printer can leave behind a queue or driver reference that continues requesting cnbur.dll.
First remove the printer:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the old Canon printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
Then restart the Print Spooler:
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
On systems that expose the classic printer management interface, remove the old Canon driver through Print Server Properties:
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
printui /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Choose only the Canon driver that belongs to the removed printer.
- Select Remove.
- Choose the option to remove the driver and driver package if Windows offers it.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct Canon package again.
Do not remove unrelated printer drivers. If Windows says the driver is in use, restart the Print Spooler and try again. If the driver still cannot be removed, restart Windows before repeating the process.

5. Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Time needed: 5 minutes
If the error began immediately after a security scan, inspect Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection associated with the Canon driver.
- Check the reported file path and threat details.
A legitimate copy should normally be restored by reinstalling the signed Canon driver package. Do not restore a file merely because its name is cnbur.dll.
If the file is outside a Canon driver directory, has no valid Canon signature, or is still detected as malicious, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. Reinstall the printer package from Canon or Windows Update instead.
To inspect a file that already exists:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures, if present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies the expected publisher.
A file copied from an unknown location may have the wrong architecture, version, model support, or malicious modifications.
6. Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes, plus a restart
Use these commands when the Driver Store or Windows component store may be damaged. They do not replace reinstalling a missing Canon driver package.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete.
If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, test the printer again. If DISM or SFC reports that it could not repair everything, install pending Windows updates and repeat the Canon driver installation. Do not manually replace files inside Driver Store.

7. Do not use Windows Features or regsvr32 as the first fix
Time needed: 2 minutes
cnbur.dll is a printer-driver component, so enabling Windows Features is not normally relevant. You can confirm that no optional Windows component is involved:

- Select System.
- Select Optional features.
- Review the installed features.
Do not enable random legacy components to fix this error. The file belongs to the Canon driver installation rather than a general Windows feature.

regsvr32 cnbur.dll is also generally the wrong command. regsvr32 works with DLLs that provide the DllRegisterServer registration interface. A printer-driver DLL may not be designed for self-registration, and the command can produce an error stating that the entry point was not found.
Only use regsvr32 when the printer vendor’s exact installation instructions explicitly require it for that specific package. Do not register a loose copy downloaded from the internet.
8. Use System Restore after a recent driver change
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
If the error began after a Windows update, driver update, or failed software installation, System Restore may undo the change.
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore can revert drivers, system files, registry settings, and installed programs without removing personal files. After the restart, test the printer. If the error returns when Windows reinstalls an old driver, remove that package and install the correct current-compatible Canon driver.

Public file metadata identifies CNBUR.DLL as part of Canon Inkjet Printer Driver software from CANON INC., with older metadata records showing inconsistent version and architecture information. Those records should not be treated as one universal version for every Canon printer.
If nothing worked
Check the exact process reporting the error:
- Open Event Viewer from the Start menu.
- Review Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System.
- Look for an event created at the same time as the DLL error.
- Note the application or service name and the full file path, if shown.
If the path points to a Canon driver directory, continue with model-specific driver cleanup and reinstall. If it points elsewhere, the named file may be a copied or altered component rather than the original driver payload.

You can also test whether Windows can print using a compatible Microsoft class driver. If printing works with that driver but Canon utilities fail, the hardware may still be usable while the older Canon software is incompatible with the current Windows release.
FAQ
Is cnbur.dll a Windows system DLL?
No. It is associated with a Canon inkjet printer-driver package. It may appear inside the Windows Driver Store because Windows stores complete signed driver packages there, but that does not make it a core Microsoft Windows DLL.

The filename alone does not prove whether a copy is safe. A legitimate copy should come from a Canon or Microsoft-delivered driver package, have the expected path, and pass signature checks. A copy in an unrelated application folder or one detected by security software should not be restored blindly.
Should I download `cnbur.dll from a DLL website?
No. Standalone DLL downloads can contain malware or the wrong version, architecture, language, or printer support. They also omit the INF, catalog, dependencies, and registry configuration required by the driver.
