If segmatservices.dll is missing or cannot load, repair the After Effects installation from Adobe Creative Cloud instead of copying a replacement into System32.
The file is especially associated with the After Effects CC 2017 and CC 2018 generation. Public metadata reports a 64-bit build numbered 15.0.1.73, but Adobe does not appear to publish a complete public manifest for this DLL, so treat exact version and compatibility details cautiously.
What this file actually does
segmatservices.dll belongs to Adobe After Effects and is normally kept inside the application’s own installation directory, commonly under a path similar to:
C:Program FilesAdobeAdobe After Effects CC 2018Support Files
That location is an application-private directory. It is not evidence that the file belongs in either of these Windows folders:

The name may appear in messages such as:
The program can't start because segmatservices.dll is missing from your computer.
There was a problem starting segmatservices.dll. The specified module could not be found.
The code execution cannot proceed because segmatservices.dll was not found.
segmatservices.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
These are generic Windows loader messages. “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may have found segmatservices.dll but failed to load a dependency required by it.
Windows searches application directories according to defined DLL loading rules. Details are documented by Microsoft in its DLL search order and application-private DLL guidance.

Fix 1: Repair After Effects by reinstalling it
This is the most reliable repair when segmatservices.dll is genuinely missing. The installer restores the DLL and the other files that must match its build and architecture.
- Save your After Effects projects and close Adobe applications.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select any remaining After Effects, Adobe Media Encoder, or related Adobe process.
- Click End task.
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop application.
- Select Apps and then All Apps.
- Find After Effects.
- Open the three-dot menu beside it and choose Uninstall.
- If Adobe asks whether to keep preferences or plug-ins, keep them only if you need them and the installation is trusted. Removing them gives you a cleaner test.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Creative Cloud again and install After Effects.
- Launch After Effects before restoring third-party plug-ins or custom preferences.
If the uninstall fails, or Creative Cloud still shows a broken installation, use Adobe’s repair or cleanup process from the Creative Cloud desktop application. The goal is to remove damaged installation records before installing After Effects again.

Open After Effects from the Start menu. A successful repair should allow it to reach the normal workspace without the DLL message. You can also check the installed application’s Support Files directory, but do not use a file’s presence alone as proof that it can load.
If the same error returns immediately, check Windows Security before reinstalling repeatedly.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an application DLL. This is more likely after an update, when a file changes unexpectedly, or when the installation is unofficial or modified.
In Windows 11 or Windows 10:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving
segmatservices.dllor the After Effects installation directory. - Expand the detection and read its name, location, and action.
- If the file came from an official Adobe installation, verify the detection before taking action.
- Prefer reinstalling After Effects from Creative Cloud rather than restoring the quarantined DLL.
- Run a scan after reinstalling.

Do not create an antivirus exclusion for an unverified DLL. Do not restore a file from a modified installer merely because its filename matches.
Fix 3: Make sure After Effects files are not mixed
A DLL from After Effects CC 2017 is not automatically interchangeable with one from CC 2018 or another build. Even if the application starts after a manual copy, mismatched files can cause crashes, rendering failures, or “not designed to run on Windows” errors.
Check whether you recently:
- Copied files from another computer
- Installed a third-party repack or modified build
- Restored only part of an old Adobe folder
- Updated After Effects while retaining files from an older version
- Moved plug-ins or support files between major versions
The safe repair is to uninstall the affected After Effects version and install one complete version through Creative Cloud. If your account exposes previous versions, use Creative Cloud’s More actions menu and Other versions. Adobe does not make every historical release available to every account, so CC 2018 may not appear.

Do not use random archived installers. If CC 2018 is unavailable, install an available supported version and verify that your projects and plug-ins are compatible with it.

A missing-dependency failure can produce the same message as a missing segmatservices.dll. If another part of the message names VCRUNTIME*.dll, MSVCP*.dll, or a similar Microsoft runtime, install the official Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
For a 64-bit After Effects installation:
- Open Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Download the official x64 package.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if it is already installed, or install it if it is absent.
- Restart Windows.
- Try After Effects again.
Install the x86 package only when a separate 32-bit component specifically requires it. Installing both architectures does not replace segmatservices.dll, and there is no reliable public evidence identifying a particular Visual C++ version as a direct requirement for this Adobe file.
If the DLL exists and the runtime repair changes nothing, investigate plug-ins, permissions, antivirus blocking, and version mismatches instead of repeatedly reinstalling runtimes.
Fix 5: Use After Effects Safe Mode for plug-ins and preferences
If After Effects starts only intermittently, crashes while loading effects, or fails after a plug-in installation, the DLL message may be a symptom of a broader startup crash.
Use After Effects’ startup recovery controls:
- Start After Effects while holding the appropriate modifier key shown by your installed version, or use its startup recovery prompt if it appears.
- Choose Start in Safe Mode when offered.
- If After Effects opens, do not immediately load your full plug-in collection.
- Use the application’s preferences and plug-in management controls to disable third-party effects.
- Restart normally.
- Re-enable plug-ins one at a time until the failure returns.
- Reset preferences if Safe Mode works but normal startup does not.
Safe Mode disables third-party plug-ins and extensions. If it makes the problem disappear, the core Adobe installation may be intact and the conflict is probably in a plug-in, preference file, or effect that loads during startup.
A plug-in built for another After Effects generation can fail even when segmatservices.dll is correct. Check the plug-in vendor’s compatibility information and install the build intended for your After Effects version.
Fix 6: Update the graphics driver when crashes involve rendering
A graphics driver will not normally restore a missing Adobe DLL, but it can cause a startup or rendering crash that is mistaken for a DLL failure. This is especially relevant when the error appears during GPU initialization, media import, effects processing, or a render rather than immediately after launching.
To check the driver manually:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
- Visit the graphics hardware manufacturer’s official support page.
- Install the driver intended for your Windows version and GPU.
- Restart Windows.
- Test After Effects before re-enabling optional plug-ins.
If the issue began immediately after a driver update, open the same Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver if Windows makes that button available.

Because segmatservices.dll belongs to After Effects rather than Windows, system repair commands are not the first fix. Use them when several unrelated applications fail, Windows reports broader corruption, or an Adobe reinstall exposes additional system-file errors.
- Open Start and type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test After Effects again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Microsoft documents these procedures in its guides for repairing a Windows image and using SFC and DISM.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not run this as a general repair:
regsvr32 segmatservices.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly ActiveX controls or COM components. There is no verified evidence that segmatservices.dll is a self-registering component.
Microsoft explains the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation. An error from regsvr32 does not repair the Adobe installation and may distract from a missing dependency or wrong application build.
Why copying the DLL is unsafe
Copying segmatservices.dll into System32, SysWOW64, or another application directory can introduce:
- The wrong After Effects build
- The wrong architecture
- A damaged or tampered file
- A missing dependency
- DLL search-path conflicts
- Malware
A known-good file from the exact same Adobe build may confirm that a file was accidentally removed, but reinstalling the complete Adobe package is the proper repair. Never use a random DLL download as a substitute for the official installer.
FAQ
Is segmatservices.dll part of Windows?
No evidence indicates that it is a Windows component. It is associated with Adobe After Effects and should normally remain in the After Effects installation directory.
Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public metadata reports a 64-bit file associated with After Effects CC 2018. Adobe has not been found to publish a complete public manifest, so do not mix files based only on architecture.
Can I download the DLL separately?
You should not. A standalone download can have the wrong version, architecture, or dependencies and can expose the system to malicious code. Reinstall After Effects from Adobe Creative Cloud.
Why does Windows say “specified module could not be found” when the file is present?
The named DLL may depend on another library that Windows cannot load. Antivirus blocking, permissions, incompatible files, and missing Microsoft runtimes can produce the same wording.
Should I reinstall Visual C++?
Only when the error identifies a Microsoft runtime or a dependency check points in that direction. Visual C++ is not established as the normal direct fix for segmatservices.dll.
What if After Effects still crashes after reinstalling?
Start in Safe Mode, disable third-party plug-ins, reset preferences, check antivirus history, and verify that the project, plug-ins, operating system, and installed After Effects version are compatible.
When should I use System Restore?
Use it only as a fallback when the file disappeared after a known restore-point event and reinstalling After Effects is unavailable. It is not the primary repair for an application DLL.
