If cnbur5.dll is missing, Windows is usually trying to load part of a Canon printer-driver package. The safest fix is to identify the printer and reinstall its complete driver package, not to download the DLL separately.
cnbur5.dll at a glance
| Item | Confirmed information |
|---|---|
| File | cnbur5.dll |
| Category | Hardware driver |
| Associated software | Canon Inkjet Printer Driver |
| Public publisher metadata | CANON INC., although this is not confirmed by an official Canon file manifest |
| Known public build | 32-bit, version 0.4.1536.2, approximately 0.13 MB |
| Package clues | prncacla.inf and Canon Inkjet class-driver files |
| Exact printer model | Cannot be identified from the filename alone |
The file is associated with Canon printer software and may also be staged as part of Windows’ printer-driver component package. It is not established as part of Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, a game runtime, or one universal Canon installer.

Public file listings also contain conflicting version information. Treat the version shown above as metadata, not a reason to search for a matching loose DLL. The correct file depends on the printer package, Windows version, architecture, and calling program.

First, identify what is calling cnbur5.dll
The same message can come from a printer utility, a print spooler-related process, an old startup entry, or a damaged installation. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that cnbur5.dll exists but one of its dependencies is missing.

Before changing files:
- Write down the complete error message.
- Note whether it appears when Windows starts, when printing, or when opening a particular program.
- Record the printer model shown on the printer itself or its label.
- Check the path shown in the error, if one is provided.
- Open File Explorer and search the Windows drive for
cnbur5.dll. - Right-click any result, choose Properties, and check its Location, Digital Signatures, and Details tabs.
Do not assume the file belongs in C:WindowsSystem32. Printer-driver files can be stored in driver-package locations, and the known public records include 32-bit builds even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
If the error appears at startup but no Canon printer is installed, open Task Manager, select Startup apps, and disable only an entry clearly associated with old Canon software. You can also open Event Viewer by pressing Win + R, entering eventvwr.msc, and checking Windows Logs > Application for the failing executable.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the printer
This is the most likely fix because it restores the complete package, its INF instructions, dependencies, and architecture-specific files.
Recommended Free Tools
- Press
Win + Ito open Settings. - Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Choose Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer.
- Click Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Allow Windows to search for the printer.
- Complete the installation and print a test page.
If Windows finds and installs the printer, open its printer properties and print a test page. If the original error does not return and printing works, the driver package was probably incomplete or damaged.
If the printer remains listed after removal, select it again and remove it. For a deeper cleanup, press Win + R, enter printui.exe /s /t2, and open the Drivers tab. Remove an obsolete Canon driver only if you are certain it belongs to the printer being repaired. Do not remove drivers still used by other working printers.
Fix 2: Install the correct Canon driver
When Windows does not provide a working driver, use Canon’s official support process.
- Open Canon’s official Software and Drivers support page.
- Search for the exact printer model.
- Select the installed Windows edition.
- Select the correct system architecture when Canon provides that choice.
- Download the complete printer software or driver package.
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if the installer requests it.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Reconnect the printer only when prompted.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Print a test page.
Do not choose a driver because its filename resembles cnbur5.dll, and do not substitute a newer-looking DLL from another model. A 32-bit driver component may be required by a printer package on 64-bit Windows, so matching the printer package is more important than matching Windows’ overall bitness.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Fix 3: Check Windows Update for printer drivers
Windows may have a compatible inbox or updated printer driver available.

- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install applicable printer or Canon-related updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the printer again.
If no driver update appears, return to Printers & scanners, remove the printer, and add it again. Windows can offer a different driver during the second installation attempt.
Microsoft’s printer installation guidance and driver-update guidance cover these standard paths.
Fix 4: Use Device Manager to refresh the driver
Device Manager is useful when the printer appears with a warning symbol or when Windows has retained a broken device entry.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if present, Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the affected Canon printer.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you are removing the damaged Canon package and no other printer depends on it.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Device Manager again.
- Select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
- Reinstall the printer through Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
If Device Manager reports that the best driver is already installed but the error continues, use the exact Canon package instead. Device Manager may not contain the manufacturer’s full utility and class-driver files.
For older printers, use the Add Printer Driver Wizard:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Scroll down and select Printer server properties.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select Add.
- Choose the correct processor architecture.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Canon and the matching printer model.
- Finish the wizard and test printing.
The wizard is useful when the model is old and the regular Add device search does not find a suitable package.

Use DISM and SFC when the file appears to be part of Windows’ component store, several built-in drivers are failing, or the problem began after a Windows update. These tools may repair an inbox Windows copy, but they will not necessarily restore a third-party Canon installation.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Remove and reinstall the Canon printer again.
DISM should run before SFC because it repairs the Windows source used by the system-file checker. Microsoft documents this sequence in its System File Checker instructions.

Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of checking for damaged Windows components less repetitive; its free scan reports detected issues, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and a successful DISM/SFC result does not replace reinstalling the Canon package.
If DISM or SFC reports that it could not repair files, restart and run the commands again. If they complete successfully but cnbur5.dll still fails, stop repeating them and return to the Canon driver, the calling executable, and the dependency check.
Fix 6: Check Windows Security quarantine
An antivirus action can remove or quarantine a driver file, although there is no verified evidence that this file is routinely detected as malware.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning the Canon driver or
cnbur5.dll. - Check the file path and detection details.
- Restore it only if it clearly belongs to the installed Canon or Windows driver package and the item scans clean.
- Otherwise, leave it quarantined and reinstall the driver from the official source.
Microsoft explains this process in its Protection History guidance. Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion just to make the error disappear.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent driver change
If the problem began immediately after a printer-driver installation, Windows update, or cleanup operation, System Restore may reverse the change.
- Press
Win + R. - Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Restart Windows and test the printer.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can undo recently installed drivers and applications. Microsoft’s System Restore instructions explain the process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, a tampered file, the wrong version, or the wrong architecture. Even a genuine-looking copy may not include the dependencies or INF registration required by the printer driver.
Use Windows Update, Device Manager, the Add Printer Driver Wizard, or Canon’s official model-specific support page instead.
Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64
Copying cnbur5.dll into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or the folder of the failing application can make Windows load an incompatible copy. It can also leave the driver package internally inconsistent.

Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Printer-driver files are normally installed through their driver package and INF file.

If it reports that DllRegisterServer was not found, that is expected for a non-self-registering driver component. Reinstall the package instead. Microsoft describes the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.
If the error still appears
Collect these details before seeking further support:
- Exact printer model
- Windows edition and build
- Complete error text
- Program or executable that displays the error
- Full path shown for
cnbur5.dll - Whether the file exists and where
- Whether the error occurs during startup, printing, or one application
- Whether it affects every Windows account or only one
- Results from DISM and SFC
- Any recent antivirus, driver, or Windows changes
If the file exists but Windows says the module cannot be found, investigate dependencies and architecture rather than replacing the file. If the error occurs only in one old application, that application may contain a stale reference to a removed printer component. If it appears at startup with no printer installed, inspect the launching executable before reinstalling unrelated software.
FAQ
Is cnbur5.dll a Windows system DLL?
It is primarily identified as a Canon Inkjet Printer Driver component. Evidence also connects it with a Windows printer-driver component package, so it can appear through Windows’ staged driver files as well as Canon’s own installation.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Which Canon printer uses cnbur5.dll?
The filename alone does not identify one printer model. Canon distributes drivers by model, Windows version, and architecture.
Can I fix it with SFC?
SFC may repair a Windows inbox copy if the component store is damaged. It will not necessarily restore a third-party Canon package. Reinstall the printer driver if SFC completes successfully but the error remains.
Is the file related to a game?
No reliable evidence connects it to a particular game. Only troubleshoot a game installation if that game’s executable is demonstrably the caller.
Why does a 32-bit DLL appear on 64-bit Windows?
A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit printer components. The driver package and calling component must match; the operating system’s overall bitness alone does not determine the correct file.
Should I reinstall Windows?
Not initially. Remove and reinstall the affected printer, check Windows Update, and repair Windows components only when the evidence points to broader corruption. Consider a Windows repair installation only after those steps fail and other system files or drivers are also malfunctioning.
