cnbxlf5.dll is an obscure 32-bit Canon inkjet printer-driver component. If Windows says it is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the safest fix is to remove the affected Canon printer package and reinstall the complete driver from Canon or Windows Update.
Do not download cnbxlf5.dll by itself and copy it into System32. That can install the wrong version or architecture and leave the damaged printer package unresolved.
What cnbxlf5.dll does
Public file metadata associates cnbxlf5.dll with Canon Inkjet Printer Driver software. The known catalogued version is 32-bit, version 0.4.1536.2, with a file size of about 0.3 MB.
The file may be stored inside Windows’ Driver Store, commonly below a path resembling:

The directory suffix varies between Windows installations and driver packages. Do not treat that example as a location where you should manually place the file.
This is not a general Windows runtime. It is not a Visual C++ file, DirectX component, .NET library, game dependency, or normal application DLL. The exact Canon printer models associated with it are not established from the filename alone.
What the error actually means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because cnbxlf5.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting cnbxlf5.dll.”
- “Error loading cnbxlf5.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because cnbxlf5.dll was not found.”
- “cnbxlf5.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that cnbxlf5.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to find a dependency required by the driver. A damaged, incomplete, quarantined, or mismatched Canon printer package can produce the same message.

- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the Canon printer connected with the error.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
If more than one Canon printer is listed, remove only the affected or obsolete device first. If the error continues, remove old Canon entries that clearly refer to the same printer.
Reinstall the complete package
- Identify the exact printer model from its label or the old printer entry.
- Go to Canon’s official support site.
- Search for the exact model.
- Select your Windows version and the architecture offered for that model.
- Download the complete printer driver or full software package.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Connect or turn on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Print a Windows test page.
A successful repair should restore the printer without a cnbxlf5.dll message. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select the printer, and choose Print a test page to confirm that the driver works.
If Canon’s installer reports that the printer is already installed, remove the existing printer and restart before running the installer again. Do not delete random folders from C:WindowsSystem32DriverStore.

Update or reinstall through Device Manager
If the printer appears in Windows but printing still fails:

- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the Canon device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If updating does not help, right-click the device again, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and install the complete Canon package rather than relying on a loose DLL.
Manually checking several driver categories and matching old packages can be tedious. Fix 2: Let Windows Update install the printer driver

- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches for the printer.
- Select the Canon printer when it appears.
- Follow the setup instructions.
- Print a test page.
You can also check for driver updates through:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Open Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates if that section is present.
- Install a printer-related update.
- Restart Windows.
Windows Update may install a basic driver rather than Canon’s full utilities. That is acceptable if printing works and the cnbxlf5.dll error disappears.

Security software may quarantine a legitimate driver file, especially after a driver update or incomplete installation. Do not restore the file blindly.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
cnbxlf5.dll, a Canon installer, or a printer driver. - Record the detection name and original file path.
- Run a full scan.
- Reinstall the Canon driver from its official support page.
Restore a quarantined file only if the detection is confirmed to be a false positive and the file is from a genuine Canon installer. Reinstalling the complete package is safer because it restores related files, configuration, and the correct Driver Store registration.
A copy found in an unrelated application folder deserves more suspicion than one inside a Canon or Windows Driver Store path. If the location is unexpected, scan the system before restoring anything.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use this step when several Windows components are failing, Windows Update is damaged, or the printer problem began after broader system corruption. It is less likely to help when only one Canon printer is affected.

- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the Canon printer driver and test printing.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the component source that SFC uses.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing whether the printer package or Windows itself is damaged can waste time. If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, do not download cnbxlf5.dll as a substitute. Repair the Windows image using a matching installation source or continue with the Canon driver reinstall.
Fix 5: Remove a stale printer-driver package
Time needed: 10–25 minutes
A failed uninstall or update can leave a printer entry referring to files that no longer exist.
First remove the printer through Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. If the old driver remains:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
printui.exe /s /t2
- Press Enter.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Highlight the confirmed old Canon driver.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the current Canon package.
If the package is not shown there, an administrator can inspect installed driver packages:
pnputil /enum-drivers
Only remove a package after confirming its Canon publisher, printer association, and actual oem##.inf name. The command format is:

pnputil /delete-driver oem##.inf /uninstall
Replace oem##.inf only with the real package name displayed on your computer. Never guess the name, and never manually delete arbitrary Driver Store folders.

Fix 6: Check the architecture and file location
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
The known catalogued cnbxlf5.dll version is 32-bit. That does not mean you should copy it into a 32-bit or 64-bit Windows system folder.
A 32-bit printer component can be part of a valid driver package on 64-bit Windows, provided the Canon installer places it in the correct package location. Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application folder does not convert it into a valid driver.
Use the driver package intended for the exact printer and Windows version. Do not select a package based only on whether Windows itself is 32-bit or 64-bit.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Printer-driver components are normally installed through the driver package and its INF configuration.

Running this command is therefore not a normal repair:
regsvr32 cnbxlf5.dll
An error saying that DllRegisterServer was not found does not prove that the DLL is defective. Reinstall the printer package instead.

If the error appears at startup
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
If no printer is visible but the message appears immediately after login, Canon software or a stale printer task may still be starting.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Canon printer utilities.
- Uninstall software belonging to a printer you no longer use.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an obsolete Canon startup entry.
- Check Task Scheduler for clearly obsolete Canon tasks.
- Remove the old printer package only after confirming it is no longer needed.
- Restart Windows.
If the printer is still in use, reinstall its driver instead of disabling every Canon component.
