Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, note:
- Which program shows the error? Look for a Canon scanning, printing, maintenance, or setup utility in the message.
- When did it begin? Common triggers include uninstalling a Canon driver, Windows Update, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, or a failed repair.
- Which Canon device is installed? Check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, Control Panel > Devices and Printers, the printer label, or its manual.
- Is Windows 32-bit or 64-bit? Go to Settings > System > About > System type. The driver must match both the device and the Windows installation.
- What does the exact message say? “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency of
cnhl460.dllis missing, even when the named file is present.
The quickest safe answer is to reinstall the correct Canon MP Driver or model-specific printer/scanner package. Do not begin by downloading cnhl460.dll from a DLL website.
What cnhl460.dll actually is
cnhl460.dll is associated with Canon’s CanonAPI MP LowLevelDriver, a component used by Canon MP multifunction printer and scanner software. It is a hardware-driver DLL, not a general Windows component, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET library.
The filename alone cannot identify the exact Canon printer or scanner. Canon’s model-specific driver package is what supplies the correct DLL, related components, INF registration, device entries, and architecture-specific files.
There is also older evidence of this file in the Windows 7 Canon imaging and printer package wiaca00d.inf, including a Driver Store or WinSxS location. That means some installations received the component through an older Windows inbox driver package. It does not mean every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation contains the file.

Public file records disagree about the file’s size, architecture, version, and exact path. Treat those details as installation-dependent rather than universal specifications.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon driver
This is the most likely repair for a missing or unloadable cnhl460.dll.
1. Identify the Canon model
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Choose Printers & scanners.
- Record the full model name.
- If the device is not listed, check Control Panel > Devices and Printers or read the model label on the hardware.
Do not select a driver merely because it contains “MP” in its name. Canon MP packages are model-specific.
2. Remove the damaged installation if necessary
If the Canon installer or model instructions recommend a clean reinstall:

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Canon software, such as the Canon MP Drivers, IJ Scan Utility, or model-specific maintenance software.
- Uninstall the affected Canon package.
- Restart Windows.
If the printer remains listed after uninstalling the software, open Printers & scanners, select it, and choose Remove. Avoid deleting unrelated printers.
3. Download the supported package
Use Canon’s official support portal and search for the exact printer or multifunction model. Select the installed Windows version and the correct architecture when Canon provides that choice.
Download the current supported MP Driver, printer driver, or scanner driver offered for that model. If Canon lists no driver for the current Windows release, check its compatibility notes instead of forcing an old package.

4. Install and test
- Open the downloaded installer.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Connect or power on the Canon device when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Test both printing and scanning if the device supports both.
A successful repair normally removes the startup error, makes the device appear correctly in Windows, and allows the Canon utility to print or scan. If the error returns immediately, continue with the dependency and Windows repair checks below.
Manually hunting through several driver pages and guessing which of many installed drivers is stale can be tedious. Fix 2: Refresh the device through Windows
Windows Update may contain a compatible class driver or a refreshed Canon driver, particularly when the device was previously installed through Windows.
Check Windows Update
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Open Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates, if available.
- Install a driver that clearly matches the Canon device.
- Restart and test the printer or scanner.
Optional driver updates are not always present, and Windows may provide only basic printing support. Canon’s package is still preferable when scanning utilities or advanced features are required.
Refresh the device in Device Manager
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Find the Canon device or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click it and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
If the problem started immediately after a driver update:

- Right-click the Canon device in Device Manager.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Choose Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- Restart and test.
If Device Manager shows an unknown device, uninstalling it and selecting Scan for hardware changes can rebuild detection. This does not replace the Canon software package, so reinstall Canon’s driver if scanning or printer features remain unavailable.
Fix 3: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use this step when the problem began after a failed update, system repair, disk problem, or broader Windows corruption. It is less likely to help when only a Canon application is broken, but the older Windows driver package evidence makes component repair reasonable on affected systems.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to finish. DISM repairs the Windows component store and may obtain replacement files through Windows Update.

Run System File Checker
In the same administrator Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
Allow the scan to reach 100 percent, then restart Windows. Microsoft documents this DISM-before-SFC order in its System File Checker guidance.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the Canon utility again. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, run DISM again after confirming that Windows Update works, restart, and repeat SFC once.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
A security product may have quarantined a Canon DLL, especially after a signature update or a damaged installation.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for a quarantined Canon file or a detection associated with the Canon installation.
- Expand the entry and inspect its path and detection details.
Restore a file only when the original Canon installation is genuine and the file’s location matches that installation. Microsoft warns that allowing a detected file can expose the computer if the file is actually malicious. Its Protection History guidance explains the available actions.

If cnhl460.dll appeared in an unrelated application folder, run a full scan. If malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline as described in Microsoft’s Defender scanning guidance.
Fix 5: Check architecture and dependencies
A 32-bit application and a 64-bit driver environment are not interchangeable in every loading situation. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit system directory, or the reverse.
Check Windows architecture at Settings > System > About > System type, then return to Canon’s support page and select the matching model and Windows package.

If the message says:
Error loading CNHL460.DLL. The specified module could not be found.

the missing item may be a dependent Canon DLL or runtime rather than cnhl460.dll itself. Reinstalling the complete Canon package is the correct way to restore those dependencies. A filename-only replacement cannot rebuild the dependency chain or device registration.
Why DLL download sites and regsvr32 are poor fixes
Do not download an isolated copy of cnhl460.dll and place it in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A random application folder
The file may be malicious, the wrong architecture, the wrong build, or incompatible with the rest of the Canon package. It also bypasses the INF installation, permissions, dependencies, and printer registration.
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer; it does not restore a missing driver package. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes it as a registration utility, not a replacement-file tool. Use it only when Canon’s instructions specifically require it for a component that is designed to be registered.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a known change
System Restore is useful if cnhl460.dll worked until a recent driver installation, update, or system change.

- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the failure.
- Review affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can roll back system files, settings, and installed drivers, but it is not a substitute for reinstalling the correct Canon package. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.
If the Canon printer is obsolete
If Canon offers no driver for your Windows release, check the model’s compatibility information. Windows may install a built-in class driver that supports basic printing but not scanning, faxing, status monitoring, or advanced paper settings.
