Reported file records associate it with HP Printing System for Windows and HP DeskJet Printing System for Windows. Those records describe an old Win32 component, but they are not a current HP binary catalog, so the exact printer model, version, and authenticity cannot be determined from the filename alone.
The error may appear when an old HP utility starts, during printing, after a Windows upgrade, or at every Windows startup. Work through these fixes in order.
1. Identify the program that needs hpomrl05.dll
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL. First find the program or printer driver that is requesting it.

Write down the complete error message and look for an executable name. Windows may identify the application in the title bar or in a message such as:
- “The program can’t start because hpomrl05.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because hpomrl05.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading hpomrl05.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The file hpomrl05.dll is missing or corrupted.”
Then check which HP software remains installed:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Search for HP, DeskJet, Printing System, or the name of your printer.
- Note the installed program names.
Also check the printer list:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Choose Printers & scanners.
- Look for the HP printer or any old printer entry.
For the older Control Panel view:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
control printers. - Press Enter.
- Check Devices and Printers for HP entries.
You can also inspect installed printer drivers:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
printui /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Look for HP or DeskJet driver packages.
If the command does not open, start Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator and run:
rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /s /t2
Finally, search for the file itself. Open PowerShell and run:
Get-ChildItem -Path C: -Filter hpomrl05.dll -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
If a result appears, right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect its Location and Details tabs. A file inside an HP printer-driver or HP installation directory is more plausible than an unexplained copy in C:WindowsSystem32, a temporary folder, or a user-writable download directory.
2. Reinstall the complete HP printer package
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is the most likely solution when you still use the printer. A DLL is rarely the entire driver. The HP installer may also install printer configuration files, services, spooler settings, language files, and related dependencies. Replacing only hpomrl05.dll can leave the installation broken.
- Find the exact printer model from the printer label or from Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Open HP’s official Software and Driver Downloads page.
- Enter the exact printer model.
- Select the Windows version currently installed.
- Download the offered driver or full-feature software package.
- If an old HP package is listed in Settings → Apps → Installed apps, uninstall it first if HP’s installer does not offer an upgrade or repair option.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the HP installer.
- Follow its connection instructions for USB or network setup.
- Print a test page from Printers & scanners.
If the error disappears when the HP utility opens and the test page prints, the missing component was restored as part of the complete package.

HP may provide only legacy support, or no compatible package, for an old printer on current Windows. The available download depends on the selected printer model and operating system. Do not substitute a package for a similar-looking DeskJet.
If reinstalling fails, remove the old printer before trying again:
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Open Installed apps and remove the related HP software.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct HP package again.
3. Remove orphaned HP software if you no longer use the printer
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
If the printer has been discarded or replaced, restoring the DLL may be the wrong objective. An old HP startup utility can continue launching after the printer has been removed, producing a missing-file message even though printing itself is no longer needed.
Remove the obsolete software:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for HP, DeskJet, and printer-related entries.
- Uninstall the package associated with the old printer.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Remove the unused printer.
- Restart Windows.
If the message still appears during startup:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an HP entry only if it clearly belongs to the retired printer.
- Restart Windows.
You can also inspect scheduled tasks:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
taskschd.msc. - Press Enter.
- Review Task Scheduler Library for an old HP task.
- Check its Actions tab before disabling it.
- Disable it only when its path clearly points to software you no longer use.
Do not delete an unknown task merely because its name contains HP. If you still use the printer, reinstall its package instead.
4. Check antivirus quarantine and the file path
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
An antivirus product may have quarantined the DLL, especially after a cleanup, malware scan, or Windows upgrade. A quarantine event does not prove whether the file was legitimate.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
hpomrl05.dll. - Expand the event and inspect its original file path.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are true:

- The file was inside a legitimate HP printer-driver directory.
- You still need the associated HP software.
- The HP package came from HP or trusted original installation media.
- The security product identifies the item as a false positive or allows a verified restore.
If the file came from a temporary folder, a download directory, or an unknown program, do not restore it. Run a full scan instead:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Select Full scan.
- Click Scan now.
Reinstalling the complete HP package from HP is safer than disabling antivirus protection or adding a broad exclusion.
5. Check 32-bit compatibility and driver state
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Available file records describe hpomrl05.dll as a 32-bit component. A 32-bit printer utility can run on 64-bit Windows through the built-in WOW64 compatibility layer. That does not make an arbitrary 64-bit replacement interchangeable.
Install the package intended for the affected printer and application. Do not copy a file between System32 and SysWOW64, and do not place duplicate copies in both folders.
You can check Windows architecture here:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose About.
- Read System type.
Update or reinstall the printer through Device Manager only when Windows lists the relevant device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the HP device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
If the device is broken or duplicated:
- Right-click the HP device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the complete HP package rather than relying on a manually copied DLL.
When several drivers are installed, manually identifying the correct package can mean hunting through old versions and guessing which device entry is stale. 6. Repair Windows components only when other Windows problems exist
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
hpomrl05.dll is not established as a Windows-protected system component. Therefore, SFC and DISM are not the primary repair for an isolated HP printer error.

Use them when you also see damaged Windows files, failing services, broken Settings components, update errors, or other unrelated system problems.

First run DISM:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Then run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward and test the HP program again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses as a source. These commands repair Windows components, not missing files belonging to an old HP installer.
Repeatedly hunting through SFC and DISM output can be tedious when the actual problem is an obsolete printer package. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems, while its full version performs repairs; it is optional, and reinstalling or removing the HP software remains the correct fix when only hpomrl05.dll is affected.
7. Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM or ActiveX components. There is no verified evidence that hpomrl05.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL.

The command would be:
regsvr32 "C:fullpathhpomrl05.dll"
Do not run it routinely for this file. If the DLL does not expose the required entry point, Windows may report that the module was loaded but the entry point was not found. That does not mean the file needs to be copied elsewhere, and registration will not rebuild an HP printer driver.
Use the original HP installer to register printer components and configure the print spooler.

8. Avoid random DLL download sites
Time needed: 1 minute
Downloading hpomrl05.dll from a random DLL website is risky because the file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, be from an unrelated release, or lack the other HP files required by the application. It may also cause Windows to load a mismatched copy from an unsafe directory.
Do not:
- Copy the file into both
System32andSysWOW64. - Replace it with a file from another computer.
- Use registry cleaners to “repair” its reference.
- Disable antivirus protection to install it.
- Register it with
regsvr32without vendor instructions.
Use HP’s official printer support and driver pages, the original installation media, or a known-good system backup. If HP no longer offers a compatible installer and the printer is no longer needed, remove the orphaned software instead.

FAQ
Is hpomrl05.dll part of Windows?
There is no reliable evidence that it is a Windows-protected system component or that it ships with current Windows releases. Reported records associate it with older HP printer software.
Can the filename identify my printer model?
No. The filename alone cannot establish the exact HP printer model. Check the erroring executable, installed programs, printer entries, and the file’s full path.
Why does Windows say “the specified module could not be found” when the DLL exists?
The named DLL may be present while a dependency required by it is missing. Reinstalling the complete HP package is safer than searching for individual dependencies.
Should I put hpomrl05.dll in System32?
No. The correct location is determined by the installer and the application. Manually copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can create conflicts and does not configure the printer driver.

An orphaned HP startup component is likely. If the printer is no longer used, remove the old HP software and disable its matching startup entry. If the printer is still used, reinstall its complete package.
Should I use System Restore?
System Restore is reasonable if the error began immediately after a known printer-driver change and no compatible HP installer is available. Create or keep a backup of important files before restoring.
What information should I provide to support?
Record the exact error text, the executable named in the dialog, the full path of any copy of hpomrl05.dll, your printer model, your Windows edition, whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, and whether you still need the printer.
