cnhl800r.dll errors commonly appear as “The program can’t start because cnhl800r.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “The code execution cannot proceed because cnhl800r.dll was not found,” “Error loading cnhl800r.dll,” or “The specified module could not be found.”
The 60-second answer
cnhl800r.dll is associated with CanonAPI MP LowLevelDriver, part of the older Canon MP printer and scanner driver family. It is not a normal Windows component or a Microsoft runtime.
The safest repair is to identify the Canon printer or scanner that was installed, remove its damaged or incomplete Canon software, restart Windows, and install the correct MP Driver or Full Driver & Software Package from Canon’s support page for that model.
Do not download an isolated copy of cnhl800r.dll and place it in System32. That can introduce malware, provide the wrong architecture, and leave the actual Canon driver installation broken.

What cnhl800r.dll belongs to
Independent file inventories identify the file as CanonAPI MP LowLevelDriver and associate it with Canon MP software. Those records describe it as an older Canon component commonly catalogued as 32-bit, but their reported version and file-size details are not consistent enough to treat them as an official specification.
The practical meaning is more important than the metadata: this DLL belongs to the Canon software that installed it. It may be involved when a Canon printer or scanner utility starts, when a print or scan job begins, or when old Canon software is being removed.
There is no reliable evidence that it ships with Windows itself. It is also not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file.
Why Windows says the file is missing
The likely causes are:
- An incomplete or damaged Canon MP Driver installation
- A Canon printer or scanner package removed only partially
- An old Canon device being used with a newer Windows release
- Antivirus software quarantining the DLL
- A 32-bit Canon application being paired with an incorrect replacement DLL
- A missing dependency beside the DLL
- A damaged Windows component store, usually alongside other Windows problems
- A tampered or malicious copy in an unexpected folder
The exact trigger depends on what the error names. If it appears when opening MP Navigator or another Canon utility, repair that Canon package. If it appears during uninstall, the cleanest solution may be removing the orphaned Canon software rather than restoring the file.
Fix 1: Identify the Canon model and reinstall its driver
This is the primary fix.
Find the installed Canon software
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for
Canon,MP Drivers,MP Navigator, or the printer model name. - Write down the model before uninstalling anything.
Look for entries resembling:
- Canon MP Drivers
- Canon
[model]series MP Drivers - Canon setup software
- MP Navigator
If more than one Canon model is listed, do not remove everything automatically. The missing DLL may belong to an older printer that is no longer connected.
Remove the damaged package
- In Installed apps, select the Canon driver or software entry.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the Canon uninstaller.
- Restart Windows, even if the uninstaller does not request it.
After restarting, open Canon’s support site and select the exact printer or scanner model, operating system, and available driver package. Install the Canon-provided MP Driver, MP Drivers, or Full Driver & Software Package shown for that device.
Do not select a package merely because its filename contains cnhl800r.dll. The installer must match the Canon model and Windows version.
Check whether it worked
Open the Canon printer or scanner utility and try a small print or scan. Also check:

- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Confirm that the Canon device appears.
- Print a test page or start a scan.
If the same error returns, the package may not support your Windows release, or the error may refer to a missing dependency rather than the DLL itself. Continue with the checks below instead of copying another DLL.
Fix 2: Check Device Manager for a driver problem
Device Manager may reveal that the Canon device or an associated imaging component was left in a failed state.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Imaging devices or Cameras.
- Look for the Canon device, an unknown device, or a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected entry and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
If Windows identifies a problem:
- Right-click the device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers to remove the driver package, select that option only when you are removing the damaged Canon installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the Canon package from the model-specific support page.
Do not use Device Manager to search for an arbitrary DLL. Its role here is to remove a failed device entry and confirm whether Windows can load the complete driver package.
A driver-update utility can reduce the manual work of checking several device entries and matching versions, but it should not replace the Canon model-specific installer for this file.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale or mismatched drivers when you are unsure which hardware packages need attention; its free scan identifies what it finds, while driver installation through the full version is optional. For cnhl800r.dll, use it as a driver-audit aid, not as a reason to download an isolated DLL.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove a Canon DLL after detecting a change or suspicious behavior.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event mentioning
cnhl800r.dllor Canon software. - Note the original file path and detection name.
Do not restore the file simply because its name looks familiar. Restore it only when all of the following are true:
- The path is inside a genuine Canon installation directory.
- The Canon software was installed from Canon media or Canon’s support site.
- The detection does not indicate a confirmed malware family.
- You can reinstall the complete Canon package instead.
The safer response is usually to remove the damaged Canon package and reinstall it from Canon. If the quarantine event repeats immediately, run a full Microsoft Defender scan and treat the installation as potentially compromised.

Fix 4: Confirm that the error is not a missing dependency
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that cnhl800r.dll itself is absent. Windows can show that message when the DLL exists but another library it needs is missing.

Check the path shown in the error or locate the executable that produces it:
- Right-click the Canon shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the application folder.
- Check whether
cnhl800r.dllis present beside the Canon executable or in the Canon driver directory.
If the file is present but the application still fails, reinstall the complete Canon package. Copying only the named DLL will not restore its dependencies, registry entries, services, scanner components, or driver configuration.
If the error names an executable from an old Canon directory that you no longer use, uninstall the orphaned Canon software instead. Removing a stale startup entry is preferable to rebuilding an obsolete driver that no longer serves a device.
Fix 5: Handle 32-bit Canon software on 64-bit Windows correctly
Older Canon MP packages commonly use 32-bit components. A 32-bit Canon application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it needs the correct 32-bit Canon DLL and dependencies.
Do not infer the correct location from the filename:
System32contains 64-bit Windows system binaries on 64-bit Windows.SysWOW64contains 32-bit Windows system binaries.
Those names are confusing, and neither folder should be used as a dumping ground for downloaded DLLs. The Canon installer knows where its files belong. Install the package intended for the exact model and Windows version, then let that installer place the files.
If Canon lists only an older package, check whether the model is retired. Some older PIXMA and MP devices have no current driver for newer Windows releases. Use the last Canon package listed for the model, and use compatibility mode only if Canon’s installer requires it. If no compatible package exists, replacing the unsupported device may be more reliable than forcing a DLL into Windows.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC repairs files, test the Canon application again. If both commands complete without resolving the Canon error, return to the Canon driver reinstall rather than repeating them.
When Windows repair work becomes difficult to interpret, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing broader system problems, while repair actions are available through the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the Canon package that owns cnhl800r.dll.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 as a routine repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general command for repairing missing or damaged libraries.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →There is no reliable public evidence that cnhl800r.dll is a self-registering ActiveX or COM DLL. Therefore, do not begin with:
regsvr32 cnhl800r.dll
That command may produce “entry point not found,” “module could not be loaded,” or an architecture error without fixing the Canon driver.
Use regsvr32 only if a Canon installer or Canon technical instruction explicitly requires it and specifies the correct 32-bit or 64-bit command. Otherwise, reinstall the complete driver package.
Fix 8: Check Windows Features only when the application specifically requires one
Windows Features are not a normal source of cnhl800r.dll. Enabling random features will not restore a Canon low-level driver.
Check them only if the Canon installer names a required Windows component:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the feature named by the installer.
- Enable it only when the Canon documentation or installer specifically requests it.
- Select OK and restart if Windows asks.
Do not enable legacy components merely because the DLL is old. The Canon package, not Windows Features, is the correct source for this file.

What not to do
Avoid these common but unsafe shortcuts:
- Downloading
cnhl800r.dllfrom a random DLL repository - Copying the file into
System32orSysWOW64 - Replacing a 32-bit DLL with an arbitrary 64-bit copy
- Running registry cleaners
- Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET without evidence that the error requires them
- Registering the DLL repeatedly with
regsvr32 - Using a generic driver package that does not identify the Canon model
An isolated file can have the wrong version, wrong architecture, altered contents, or missing dependencies. The complete Canon installer is the safer source.
FAQ
Is cnhl800r.dll a Windows file?
No evidence supports that conclusion. It is associated with CanonAPI MP LowLevelDriver and older Canon MP printer and scanner software.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich Canon model installed it?
No reliable mapping identifies one specific model. Identify the Canon printer or scanner previously installed, then use that model’s Canon support page.
Should I copy it into the application folder?
No. The application folder may be the correct location for some software, but the installer must decide that. Copying the DLL can hide a missing dependency while leaving the driver incomplete.
What if the file exists but Windows says it is not designed to run on Windows?
That usually points to corruption, incompatible architecture, or a damaged dependency. Remove and reinstall the complete Canon package rather than replacing the file manually.
What if Canon no longer offers a driver?
Check Canon’s regional support pages and any original installation media. Use the last Canon package listed for the model only when it is appropriate for your Windows release. If the device is unsupported, a newer device may be the practical solution.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What information should I collect if the error remains?
Record the Canon model, Windows edition and build, full error text, executable path, path named for cnhl800r.dll, whether the file exists in the Canon installation directory or DriverStore, any antivirus quarantine event, and relevant Event Viewer details. This separates a missing file from a dependency, permissions, compatibility, or signature problem.
