wkspbrokerax.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component. If Windows says wkspbrokerax.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, record:
- Which program triggers the message: Windows itself, a RemoteApp or Remote Desktop workspace, or one legacy application.
- When it happens: during Windows startup, when signing in to a workspace, or only when launching one program.
- The complete message and path: note whether it names
System32,SysWOW64, an application folder, or only the file name. - Your Windows version: press
Win + R, enterwinver, and select OK. - Your system architecture: go to Settings > System > About and check System type.
These details distinguish a damaged Windows component from an application-specific problem, a missing dependency, or an architecture mismatch.

What wkspbrokerax.dll does
wkspbrokerax.dll is associated with Microsoft Workspace Broker ActiveX Control, part of the Windows technology used by RemoteApp and Desktop Connections. Microsoft documents WorkspaceBrokerAx as an ActiveX API for setting up and managing workspace connections.
It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, game library, or hardware driver. Microsoft’s documented WorkspaceBrokerAx API is historical, with support documented for Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2012 R2. Older applications can still request the component on newer Windows installations.

The file normally belongs in these locations:
- 64-bit Windows:
%windir%System32wkspbrokerax.dll - 32-bit applications on 64-bit Windows:
%windir%SysWOW64wkspbrokerax.dll - 32-bit Windows:
%windir%System32wkspbrokerax.dll
Despite its name, System32 is normally the native 64-bit system directory on 64-bit Windows. SysWOW64 contains system files used by 32-bit applications through Windows compatibility redirection. Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.
A version such as 10.0.10586.0 is an older Windows build version, not a universal download target. The correct file depends on your Windows build, architecture, language resources, and component store.
Recognize the error correctly
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because wkspbrokerax.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because wkspbrokerax.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading wkspbrokerax.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “wkspbrokerax.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Cannot register wkspbrokerax.dll.”
These are generic Windows loader or COM messages. They do not prove that the file itself is absent.
“The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by wkspbrokerax.dll is missing, damaged, or the wrong architecture. A file can exist in the expected directory and still fail to load.

Fix 1: Install pending Windows updates
Windows Update is the quickest safe repair for a component that was removed, damaged, or left incomplete by an upgrade.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Launch the program or workspace that produced the error.
Test the same action that originally failed. If the message remains, continue with the component-store repair below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. System File Checker then uses that repaired store to replace missing or corrupted protected system files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application or workspace again.
Microsoft documents this DISM-then-SFC sequence in its System File Checker instructions.
A successful repair may report that corrupted files were found and repaired. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run the two commands again. If DISM says that source files could not be found, use a matching Windows installation source with DISM’s /Source option instead of copying wkspbrokerax.dll from another computer. Microsoft describes that process in its Windows image repair documentation.

Fix 3: Repair the application that triggers the error
If the error appears only when launching one application, the application may have a damaged installation, an incorrect private DLL, or a missing dependency. Repair that program after completing Windows repair.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application and test it.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings. Otherwise uninstall the program and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.

- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
For traditional desktop software:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts and restart Windows.
If this concerns a RemoteApp or enterprise workspace client, obtain the current installer or repair instructions from the organization that provides the workspace. Do not assume that reinstalling Visual C++ will restore this Windows component.

A game launcher’s Verify files function is appropriate when the launcher itself reports a damaged installation. There is no reliable evidence that a particular mainstream game universally requires wkspbrokerax.dll, so do not treat a generic DLL result as proof that a game owns the file.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine a legitimate system file after a false detection, or malware may have altered or replaced it.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
wkspbrokerax.dll. - Check the recorded path, detection name, and action.
Restore the file only when the path is the expected Windows directory, the Microsoft signature is valid, and the event clearly indicates a false positive. If the path is an application folder, the file is unsigned, or the detection remains suspicious, do not restore it.

Instead:
- Return to Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Run a Full scan.
- If malware is suspected, run Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
After the scan, run DISM and SFC again. Microsoft explains these choices in its guidance for Protection History and Microsoft Defender Offline.
Fix 5: Check architecture and private copies
A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL. This matters when an application folder contains its own copy of the file.
Do not copy an x86 file into System32 or an x64 file into SysWOW64. Also avoid leaving an untrusted copy beside an application executable, because Windows may search that directory before using the correct system component.
If the error names an application directory:
- Close the application.
- Make a note of the full path.
- Rename the private
wkspbrokerax.dll, rather than deleting it immediately. - Repair or reinstall the application from its official installer.
- Test again.
If the error names System32 or SysWOW64, do not replace the file manually. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.

wkspbrokerax.dll is an ActiveX control, and public export information shows registration entry points. However, regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command.
Use registration only when:
- The file already exists in the correct Windows directory.
- The error specifically concerns COM activation or “class not registered.”
- Windows repair has not resolved the registration problem.
For the native copy on 64-bit Windows, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
%windir%System32regsvr32.exe "%windir%System32wkspbrokerAx.dll"
For the 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows, run:
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "%windir%SysWOW64wkspbrokerAx.dll"
Restart and test the application. If registration reports that a dependent module is missing, that confirms the target file may not be the only problem. Microsoft’s Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance explains why dependency and bitness errors can cause registration to fail.
Fix 7: Investigate drivers only when the evidence points there
wkspbrokerax.dll is not a hardware driver, so driver reinstallation is not a primary fix. Consider drivers only if Device Manager shows a separate device error or the failure began with a display, network, storage, or remote-session driver change.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the failure.
- Right-click the device and choose Properties.
- Check the Device status message and Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart and test again.

- Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
- Review the available recovery options.
- If Windows will not boot normally, enter Windows Recovery Environment.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
- Remove the most recent quality update when appropriate.
- Restart and test.
Windows Recovery may also offer System Restore. Choose a restore point from before the failure if one exists. Do not use recovery to install a random DLL; the goal is to return Windows to a consistent component state.
If several Windows DLLs are failing, run:
chkdsk C: /scan
This checks the file system while Windows is running. To repair logical errors, use:
chkdsk C: /f
Windows may schedule the repair for the next restart.
Do not download wkspbrokerax.dll from a DLL website
A standalone Microsoft wkspbrokerax.dll redistributable has not been identified. Downloading a DLL from a random repository can introduce malware, the wrong Windows build, incorrect language resources, or the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture. It can also leave the damaged component store or missing dependency untouched.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows Recovery, and the official installer for the application that triggered the error. If you need to verify a file, check its path, Microsoft digital signature, architecture, and version against the Windows installation rather than trusting a filename alone.

Is wkspbrokerax.dll part of Visual C++?
No. Visual C++ redistributables provide libraries such as vcruntime*.dll and msvcp*.dll. wkspbrokerax.dll belongs to Microsoft’s Workspace Broker ActiveX technology.

No. A dependency can be missing, corrupted, or built for the wrong architecture. The loader may report the target DLL even when the target file exists.
Can I copy the file from another Windows PC?
Do not. The other computer may have a different build, architecture, language configuration, signature, or component state. Repair your own Windows installation instead.
What if WorkspaceBrokerAx returns 0x80070002?
Microsoft documents that WorkspaceBrokerAx.InitializeWorkspaceConfiguration can return 0x80070002 when no workspace has ever been subscribed. That result alone does not prove that wkspbrokerax.dll is missing.
Should I reinstall my graphics or network driver?
Not as the first response. This is a Windows ActiveX/system component, not a hardware driver. Investigate drivers only when Device Manager or the application’s diagnostic information points to a separate driver fault.
What should I collect if the error remains?
Record the full file path, exact error code, calling application, Windows architecture, Windows version, and any Event Viewer entry naming a faulting module. If DISM, SFC, application repair, and a Windows repair install all fail, those details are needed to identify the remaining dependency or installation problem.
