Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →cnn08cl2rc.dll is a Canon printer-driver resource file, not a general Windows runtime such as Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. When Windows says it is missing or cannot load, repair the Canon printer package that installed it instead of downloading the DLL and copying it into a system folder.
What this file actually does
The filename is associated with Canon Inbox Printer Driver Resource DLL, a component developed by Canon. “Inbox” describes the way a printer driver can be supplied through Windows or its driver distribution system; it does not mean that cnn08cl2rc.dll is a core Windows system library.
Available package evidence places the file with Canon class-driver content, including CNN08CL2FX.dll, Canon print configuration files, and the prncacl2.inf installation file. This points to an older Canon UFR II or LIPSLX printer-driver package rather than a standalone application.
The exact printer model cannot be identified from the DLL name alone. Several Canon printer drivers can be installed on one computer, and more than one may use related class-driver files. Public file indexes also disagree about the DLL’s architecture, so do not use an online listing to decide whether you need a 32-bit or 64-bit replacement.

A correctly installed driver package normally places its files under Windows driver-management locations, including the Driver Store. That package contains the INF file, driver binaries, resource files, configuration data, and any dependencies Windows needs. cnn08cl2rc.dll is not a file that should be copied into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application directory.
Causes matched to the symptom
| Symptom or timing | Most likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| The error appeared after removing a printer | An old driver or spooler reference remains | Remove the obsolete printer and driver, then restart Print Spooler |
| It began after a Windows upgrade | The previous Canon package is incompatible or incomplete | Reinstall a compatible Canon driver |
| It started after a driver update | The package was damaged or the update failed | Remove the affected package and reinstall it |
| Windows says the file is missing | The DLL was deleted, quarantined, or never installed correctly | Verify security history and reinstall the complete driver |
| Windows says “specified module could not be found” | The named DLL or one of its dependencies is unavailable | Reinstall the package rather than replacing only the named file |
| Windows says the file is not designed to run on Windows | Wrong architecture, incompatible driver, or corruption | Install the package matching the printer and Windows architecture |
| The error returns after every reinstall | Antivirus interference, an unsupported legacy driver, disk damage, or an orphaned spooler reference | Check protection history, remove old packages, test disk health, and verify model support |
Fix 1: Identify the Canon printer first
Do this before deleting drivers. Removing a shared Canon package can affect another printer that is still working.
Check Printers & scanners
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Review the installed printers and note every Canon model.
- Select a Canon printer and check its name, connection, and driver-related options.
If the error appears when printing from a particular program, try printing to each Canon printer one at a time. The printer that triggers the error is the strongest candidate, but the failure may still involve a shared class driver.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers.
- Also expand Print queues if it is present.
- Look for a Canon device with a warning icon, an unknown device, or an old printer entry.
- Right-click the suspected device and select Properties.
- On the Driver tab, record the provider, date, and version if Windows displays them.
Do not assume that a missing warning icon proves the driver is healthy. A printer can appear normally while its package is incomplete.
Check installed printer packages
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
printui /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Look for Canon entries and record the exact model or class-driver name.
On some Windows configurations, you can reach the same area through Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Printer server properties → Drivers. This list is useful when the printer itself has already been removed but its driver remains.
Fix 2: Reinstall the printer through Windows Update
Windows Update is the safest first repair because it installs a driver package through Windows’ normal driver-management process.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches for available printers.
- If the Canon printer appears, select Add device.
- If it does not appear, select Add manually and follow the connection-specific prompts.
- After installation, select the printer.
- Choose Print a test page if that option is available.
For an existing printer, remove it first only if the current entry is clearly damaged:

- Select the Canon printer under Printers & scanners.
- Select Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device and reinstall the printer.
Microsoft’s printer installation guidance documents these paths and explains how Windows obtains printer drivers.
If Windows installs a basic class driver, printing may work while advanced Canon features are absent. Features such as specialized finishing, status monitoring, or custom print settings may require Canon’s model-specific package.
Fix 3: Install the exact Canon driver
Use Canon’s official support channel for the precise printer model and the Windows edition installed on the computer. Do not select a similar model because its name or series appears close.
- Identify the complete model name from the printer itself, its label, or the existing Windows printer entry.
- Open Canon’s official support page in your browser.
- Search for the exact model.
- Select the installed Windows version and system architecture when Canon presents those choices.
- Download the printer driver or full software package.
- Close printing applications.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Follow the connection instructions for USB, network, or wireless installation.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Print a test page.
If the Canon download page has no Windows 11 package, check whether Canon lists a Windows 10 package that supports the device. Do not force an unrelated driver. For an old model, the practical choices may be a basic Windows class driver, the last Canon-supported package, or replacement hardware.
When choosing architecture, match the package to Windows rather than to an online copy of cnn08cl2rc.dll. The public indexes for this particular file do not establish a definitive architecture. A 32-bit driver package can sometimes be the correct package for older hardware, but the installer and operating system compatibility information must determine that choice.

If reinstalling over the existing package does not help, remove the printer and its old driver before installing again. First confirm that other printers do not depend on the same Canon package.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer.
- Select Remove.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Printers and Print queues.
- Right-click the obsolete Canon entry and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers to remove the driver package, select that option only for the affected, obsolete device.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
printui /s /t2. - Select the Drivers tab.
- Select the old Canon driver.
- Choose Remove.
- Select the option to remove the driver and driver package if Windows offers it.
- Restart the computer.
- Reinstall through Windows Update or the exact Canon package.
If Windows says the driver is in use, restart the Print Spooler:

- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
- Try removing the driver again.
You can also use an elevated Command Prompt:
net stop spooler
net start spooler
A successful repair means the Canon printer installs without the DLL error, appears under Printers & scanners, and can print a test page. If the old driver still appears, do not repeatedly delete random files from the Driver Store. Use the printer and driver-management interfaces to identify the package first.
When several driver entries are installed and it is difficult to determine which one is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and identify outdated packages; its free scan shows what it found, while repair or driver installation requires the full version. For this Canon file, verify the suggested package against the exact printer model before installing it.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software may have removed or quarantined a driver resource file.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
cnn08cl2rc.dll, a Canon driver, or the printer installer. - Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error.
- Restore it only when it is part of a verified Canon package and the package source is trustworthy.
- If there is any doubt, leave the file quarantined and reinstall the complete driver from Windows Update or Canon.
A complete reinstall is preferable to restoring an isolated file because it recreates the package relationship, dependencies, permissions, and installation records.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC are secondary steps here. They repair Windows component and protected-system-file corruption; they are not guaranteed to recreate a missing third-party Canon file in the Driver Store.
Use them when the failure began after broader Windows corruption, Windows Update problems, or an upgrade that left multiple system components behaving incorrectly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the Canon printer driver if the DLL error remains.
Microsoft specifies that DISM should run before SFC in its system-file repair guidance.
If the commands report that they repaired files, test printing again. If they report no integrity violations but cnn08cl2rc.dll is still missing, return to the Canon driver package rather than repeating SFC indefinitely.

- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Scroll to Related settings.
- Select Printer server properties.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select Add.
- Follow the Add Printer Driver Wizard.
- Select the correct processor architecture for the installed Windows system.
- Select Windows Update when prompted for the driver list.
- Choose Canon and the matching printer model.
- Finish the wizard.
- Add the printer again and print a test page.
Microsoft describes this process in its printer-driver installation instructions.
If the model is absent from the wizard and Canon does not provide a compatible package, the printer may be unsupported on the current Windows release. A basic class driver may still provide ordinary printing, but advanced features may not work.
Why regsvr32 is not the fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 cnn08cl2rc.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. cnn08cl2rc.dll is identified as a resource file within an INF-managed printer-driver package, and there is no evidence that it is a self-registering COM library. Registering it manually will usually produce another error or change nothing.
Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains its intended use. The supported repair is package installation, not manual registration.

Why standalone DLL downloads are unsafe
A random DLL download can have the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, altered contents, or missing companion files. It can also leave Windows with a file that is not associated with the correct Canon driver package, so the original error returns.
Do not:
- copy the file into
System32orSysWOW64; - rename a similarly named Canon DLL;
- replace it with a file from another printer model;
- use registry cleaners to create a DLL path;
- install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because this printer-driver resource is missing.
Use Windows Update or the exact Canon driver package instead. Windows’ Driver Store documentation explains why trusted driver packages are managed as complete units.

If the error returns after every reinstall
Check these remaining causes in order:
- Review Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history for repeated quarantine events.
- Remove obsolete Canon printers and packages through Print server properties.
- Restart the Print Spooler.
- Check whether the printer model has a compatible driver for the current Windows release.
- Check drive health and filesystem integrity if other files are disappearing or installers fail.
- Use System Restore if the problem began immediately after a known driver change.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan if the file is repeatedly replaced, altered, or flagged.
If the printer is no longer supported, stop pursuing the DLL itself. Use the Windows basic printer driver if it provides the required functions, install the last compatible Canon package, or replace the hardware.
FAQ
Is cnn08cl2rc.dll a Windows system DLL?
No. It is Canon printer-driver package content that Windows may manage through its Driver Store. It should not be treated like a general-purpose Windows library.

No authoritative source maps it to one exclusive model. Identify the affected printer in Printers & scanners, Device Manager, and Print server properties.
Does “specified module could not be found” always mean the DLL is missing?
No. Windows may be unable to find a dependency required by the Canon DLL. Reinstalling the complete driver package addresses both possibilities more reliably than replacing one file.
Should I run SFC first?
Only when broader Windows corruption is suspected. For a printer-specific error, identify and reinstall the Canon driver first. If you use system repair commands, run DISM before SFC.
Will Windows Update restore advanced Canon features?
Not always. Windows may install a basic class driver that restores printing but omits model-specific features. Use the exact Canon package when those features are required.
