Campaign Early Access starts Friday, October 16, in Pacific Time, and the full game releases on October 23 at midnight local time. Can you install Modern Warfare 4 before launch?
Yes, if you meet both eligibility conditions: you must be on PC and have digitally pre-purchased the game. The preload is not an open download for every account. Once the PC storefront enables it, install the game through the launcher where you made the purchase and leave enough free SSD capacity for the installation and updates.

How large is the MW4 download?
The official minimum PC specification requires 115 GB of storage on an SSD. Activision warns that mandatory updates may require additional space, so treating 115 GB as the exact final download would be unsafe. It is the published minimum capacity figure for the PC installation, not a promise that the launcher will display exactly 115 GB or that consoles will use the same amount.

No authoritative platform-by-platform final download-size table is provided in the available official information. Console packages, language files, texture assets and later patches can change the amount shown by a particular storefront. Keep more than the stated minimum free before starting the install, especially if your drive is nearly full, so an update does not fail midway.

Do not confuse that full-game relationship with the Beta. Activision says the Beta is a separate install: find it in your platform’s storefront and download it independently instead of expecting it to arrive automatically through a normal Call of Duty update. The Beta’s separate-install rule does not mean the full launch is detached from the connected Call of Duty experience.
Installation requirements and internet rules
For PC, the official requirements include 64-bit Windows 10, 8 GB of RAM, specified minimum CPU and GPU models, DirectX compatibility, broadband internet and an SSD with 115 GB available. Internet access is not limited to downloading. Activision’s game FAQ says a continuous internet connection is required for Multiplayer, including Private Matches, and for DMZ. The reason given is texture streaming across all game modes. If your connection drops, those modes may not remain playable even after the installation has completed.

What to do before October 15
- Confirm the account: use the same PC account that completed the digital pre-purchase.
- Check the drive: make at least 115 GB available on an SSD, with additional headroom for mandatory updates.
- Update the system: verify 64-bit Windows 10, 8 GB RAM, compatible listed CPU/GPU hardware and DirectX support.
- Prepare the connection: use a stable broadband link; a large preload can take substantially longer on a slow or congested connection.
- Open the launcher on preload day: look for the install or preload control after 9:00 a.m. PT. If it is missing, restart the launcher, check the purchase account and confirm that the storefront region has reached the scheduled time.
- Plan for launch access: installation alone does not override the October 16 Campaign Early Access or October 23 full-launch schedule.
Common points of confusion
“115 GB” versus the download shown by the launcher
The requirement describes space the installation needs. A launcher can show a different download amount because of compression, pre-existing Call of Duty files, language choices or patch staging. The official figure should therefore be used to reserve capacity, not to predict an exact transfer size.
Local midnight versus Pacific Time
The preload announcement is tied to 9:00 a.m. PT on October 15, while the full release is stated as midnight local time on October 23. Convert the preload time for your region and allow for service interruptions rather than assuming every region unlocks simultaneously.
Preload versus playability
Preloading copies files early; it does not necessarily unlock every mode. Campaign Early Access starts October 16 for eligible pre-orders, and the full game’s release remains October 23.
