Spending Haze at a Mistle raises your character’s level and improves the attributes supplied by your active Blood Code. Those attributes then interact with your weapon, Blood Veil, Gifts, and equipment requirements. A level increase can help, but a Blood Code that does not support your weapon or Gifts—or equipment used below its requirements—can leave a high-level character performing badly.
When your damage or survivability feels low, check your requirements, Blood Code, scaling, and upgrades before assuming you simply need more levels. The practical question is not “What level should I be?” but “Does my level support a compatible setup that meets its requirements?”

What leveling actually does in Code Vein
At a Mistle, you can spend Haze to level up. Leveling raises your character’s stats, but it does not work like a conventional system in which every level lets you permanently assign a point to Strength, Dexterity, or another attribute. Your equipped Blood Code provides an attribute profile, and that profile determines how the increased level is expressed in combat.
Changing Blood Codes therefore changes the way your character uses the same underlying level. One Code may favor physical attacks, while another gives you a better profile for Gifts, stamina, health, drain, or resistances. The level remains a progression investment, but the active Code decides which attributes are prominent and how well your chosen equipment and abilities use them.

What the main attributes influence
| Attribute | Primary effects described by the mechanics references | What to check in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Contributes to physical attacks and physical moves. | Whether your weapon and Blood Code make effective use of Strength. |
| Dexterity | Contributes to physical attacks and physical moves. | Whether the weapon’s scaling favors Dexterity and your Code supplies it. |
| Mind | Contributes to Gift-related values. | Whether your Gifts and Blood Code are built around Mind. |
| Willpower | Contributes to Gift-related values. | Whether the Gifts you use benefit from Willpower scaling. |
| Vitality | Contributes to health and physical resistance. | Whether you need more survivability and whether your Code provides the relevant Vitality profile. |
| Fortitude | Contributes to stamina and elemental resistance. | Whether stamina management or elemental defense is the limiting problem. |
The references also describe Blood Codes as affecting drain and resistance alongside the attributes above. A level increase is consequently broad rather than a guaranteed damage upgrade: it raises stats, but the result depends on which Code is active and what those stats feed into.
Why your Blood Code matters as much as your level
Blood Codes determine your attribute profile. That profile is the bridge between leveling and your actual combat results. If you level while using a Code whose strengths do not match your weapon, Gifts, or preferred defense, the additional stats may produce less benefit than you expect.
Think of the Code as the build context for your level. A physical weapon asks you to consider the Strength or Dexterity profile that supports its attacks. A Gift-focused setup asks you to consider Mind or Willpower. A character struggling to survive may need a Code with a more suitable Vitality, Fortitude, or resistance profile. These are not separate “classes” that lock you permanently; they are the active stat profiles through which your level operates.

- In the not too distant future, a mysterious disaster has brought collapse to the world as we know it. Towering skyscrapers, once symbols of prosperity, are now lifeless graves of humanity’s past pierced by the Thorns of Judgment. Team up and embark on a journey to the ends of hell to unlock your past and escape your living nightmare in CODE VEIN.
- At the center of the destruction lies a hidden society of Revenants called Vein. This final stronghold is where the remaining few fight to survive, blessed with Gifts of power in exchange for their memories and a thirst for blood.

This is why comparing two characters only by level can be misleading. If they use different Blood Codes, weapons, Blood Veils, and Gifts, the same level can produce very different damage, stamina, defenses, and drain performance.
Equipment requirements can erase the benefit of a higher level
Weapons and Blood Veils have stat requirements. Meeting those requirements is a basic condition for getting their intended performance. The battle-mechanics reference reports severe penalties when requirements are not met:
| Equipment value affected | Effect reported when requirements are unmet | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Non-scaling stats | 10% effectiveness | Even the equipment’s non-scaling contribution is heavily reduced. |
| Weapon scaling stats | 5% of base effectiveness | The attributes you expected to improve weapon damage contribute very little. |
| Blood Veil scaling stats | 10% effectiveness | The Veil’s scaling-related benefit is substantially reduced. |
These percentages come from a community-maintained mechanics reference rather than an official developer specification, so treat them as reported game values and verify behavior in your own version. The practical conclusion is still clear: leveling does not make an unmet requirement disappear. If your current Code cannot satisfy a weapon or Blood Veil requirement, adding levels without changing the Code or equipment may leave the setup inefficient.
Rank #3
Check requirements before judging a weapon by its displayed base damage. A weapon with a lower number on the inventory screen can perform better for your character if its requirements are met and its scaling matches your active attributes. Conversely, a high-base-damage weapon can disappoint when its requirements are unmet or its scaling points toward attributes your Code does not emphasize.
How scaling turns attributes into damage or defense
Equipment scaling determines how strongly your attributes affect performance. The weapon and Blood Veil each have their own scaling relationships, while Gifts use the relevant Gift-oriented attributes described above. Your level raises the attributes supplied by the Blood Code; scaling determines how much those attributes matter to a particular item or ability.
For a physical build, compare the weapon’s Strength and Dexterity scaling with the profile of the equipped Code. For a Gift build, compare the Gifts’ relevant attribute requirements and the Code’s Mind or Willpower profile. For defense, consider whether the Blood Veil and Code support the resistance or health benefits you need. There is no universally best scaling letter or combination in the supplied mechanics information; the useful match depends on your goal and equipment.

Upgrading equipment is another part of the equation. A level increase and an equipment upgrade do different jobs: the level raises character attributes through the active Code, while the upgrade improves the item itself. If your requirements are already met and the scaling fits, an equipment improvement may address a damage or defense problem more directly than another level. If requirements are not met, fix that compatibility issue first.
A step-by-step diagnosis for weak damage or survivability
Use this order when a character feels underpowered. It prevents you from spending Haze on levels that do not address the actual bottleneck.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check every requirement. At the equipment screen, confirm that the active Blood Code meets the weapon and Blood Veil requirements. If a requirement is missing, switch to a compatible Code or choose equipment your current Code can use effectively.
- Identify the result you want to improve. Decide whether the problem is physical weapon damage, Gift damage, health, stamina, drain, physical resistance, or elemental resistance. Different attributes and Codes address different outcomes.
- Match the Blood Code to that result. For physical moves, inspect the Strength and Dexterity profile. For Gifts, inspect Mind and Willpower. For health and physical resistance, consider Vitality; for stamina and elemental resistance, consider Fortitude.
- Compare equipment scaling with the Code. A weapon or Blood Veil should scale from attributes your active Code actually supplies. If the item’s useful scaling and your Code’s profile point in different directions, test a different Code or item before concluding that your level is too low.
- Improve the equipment when the setup is compatible. Once requirements are met and the scaling fits, evaluate the available weapon or Blood Veil upgrade. This is a separate improvement path from leveling and can be the more relevant fix for an item that has fallen behind.
- Spend Haze after the compatibility checks. If the setup is legal, matched, and upgraded as appropriate, level at a Mistle. The resulting attribute increase is then working through a build that can use it.
Leveling versus changing your equipment or build
The best next step depends on what is failing. Use the following comparison as a decision guide, not as a universal ranking.
Best Value
| Your situation | First thing to inspect | Why level alone may not solve it |
|---|---|---|
| You die quickly to physical attacks. | Vitality profile, Blood Veil compatibility, and physical resistance. | A level increase helps only through the active Code’s relevant attributes; an unsuitable Code or Veil can remain the larger problem. |
| You die to elemental damage. | Fortitude and the Blood Veil’s defensive fit. | General leveling does not guarantee the elemental resistance your current setup lacks. |
| Your weapon damage is low. | Weapon requirements, Strength/Dexterity scaling, and equipment improvement. | Unmet requirements sharply reduce effectiveness, and mismatched scaling limits the value of added attributes. |
| Your Gifts feel weak. | Mind/Willpower profile, Gift requirements, and the Code supporting them. | Levels raise stats, but Gift output depends on whether the active Code and Gifts use the same attributes. |
| You run out of stamina or struggle with related defenses. | Fortitude profile and the way your current Code supports stamina. | A level increase is less useful if the active Code does not emphasize the attribute you need. |
| Your weapon or Blood Veil is below its requirement. | Change the Code or equipment first. | The reported requirement penalties can reduce scaling to a small fraction of its normal effectiveness. |
Should you follow a recommended level for every area?
No authoritative area-by-area level chart is established by the available mechanics evidence. Player discussions often ask for recommended levels, but a single number would not account for Blood Code choice, equipment requirements, scaling, upgrades, or how effectively you play the encounters.
Use level as one progression signal instead of a pass/fail requirement. A more useful readiness check is whether you can meet your equipment requirements, deal reliable damage with the chosen scaling, survive ordinary mistakes, and manage the stamina, Gifts, drain, and resistances your build relies on. If those conditions are satisfied, being above or below an informal community level suggestion does not by itself prove that your build is right or wrong.
How high can you level?
A community-maintained battle-mechanics reference reports a level cap of 300 for Code Vein. Because that figure is not presented here as an official Bandai Namco specification, treat it as a lower-confidence mechanics detail and verify the cap in your own game version. The cap is not a reason to level indiscriminately: reaching a high level cannot compensate for unmet equipment requirements or a poor Code-and-scaling match.

Common misconceptions about levels
“A higher level always means more weapon damage.”
Not necessarily. Leveling raises the attributes supplied by your Blood Code, but weapon damage also depends on requirements and scaling. If the weapon favors attributes your Code does not provide, or if a requirement is unmet, the extra level may have little practical effect.
“I should keep one Blood Code because my level is tied to it.”
Your level is not a permanent assignment to one attribute spread. The active Blood Code determines the profile through which your level functions. Switching Codes is part of adapting your character to different weapons, Gifts, and defensive needs.
“If I am stuck, I only need to farm Haze.”
More Haze can help when your setup is already compatible, but farming levels is a poor first response to a requirement or scaling problem. Check the Code, equipment, and upgrades first; otherwise you may spend Haze without fixing the source of the weakness.
Quick Recap
What to remember when spending Haze
- Leveling is useful: Haze spent at a Mistle raises your character’s stats.
- The active Blood Code supplies the attribute profile, so the same level can support very different builds.
- Strength and Dexterity primarily support physical moves; Mind and Willpower support Gift-related values; Vitality supports health and physical resistance; Fortitude supports stamina and elemental resistance.
- Weapon and Blood Veil requirements come before optimization. Reported community-wiki penalties for missing them are severe.
- Scaling and equipment improvements determine whether the added attributes turn into useful damage or defense.
- No verified universal level recommendation for each area is established here. Judge readiness by the complete setup and your results in combat.
