These terms are not governed by one universal college-football standard: check the conference or competition and the report date. Percentages used by some leagues are policy labels, not proven odds for an individual player.
What do the college football injury report terms mean?
“Injury report” is common shorthand, but the SEC, ACC, Big Ten and College Football Playoff (CFP) describe these documents as availability reports. Their categories overlap, but the exact definitions and when they apply depend on the governing policy and season.
| Status | SEC, 2025–26 | ACC published definition | Plain-language meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Out | Will not play; 0% chance to play. | Will not play in the game. | The player is reported unavailable for that game. The label alone does not identify an injury or say how long the player will be sidelined. |
| Doubtful | Unlikely to play; 25% chance to play. | Unlikely to play; 25% chance. | Playing is considered unlikely under these definitions, but the status is not the same as Out. |
| Questionable | Uncertain to play; 50% chance to play. | Uncertain to play; 50% chance. | The player’s availability has not been settled by the report. The label does not explain why. |
| Probable | Probable to play; 75% chance to play. | Likely to play; 75% chance. | A category used in some report phases and policies, but not every system includes it at every stage. |
| Available | When affirmatively designated after a prior report: will play; 100% chance. On game day, an Available player will dress and be available to play. | Fully available to play in the game. | A participation-status label, not a promise of a particular role, number of snaps or performance. |
| Game Time Decision | Coaches and/or medical personnel evaluate the player during pregame warmups before deciding whether the player can participate. | The final decision will be made closer to the game. | The decision is pending near kickoff; this is not a diagnosis. |
The percentages in the SEC’s 2025–26 regulations and the ACC’s published definitions are classifications written into those policies. They are not independently verified forecasts of an individual player’s chance of appearing, nor statistics derived from past outcomes. The SEC says that if a player has any chance to play, the player must not be listed Out and must be listed at least Doubtful on an initial report. The SEC regulations also require institutional personnel to act in good faith and prohibit gamesmanship intended to hide a player’s status.
Why the league and report date matter
There is no single NCAA-wide vocabulary or timetable established by the policies summarized here. Conference rules and CFP procedures govern their own reports, and labels can vary by reporting phase. Always identify the competition and season before interpreting a status.

| Policy and season | Reporting schedule | Key scope or default |
|---|---|---|
| SEC, 2025–26 | For a Saturday game, initial report due Wednesday by 7 p.m. CT/8 p.m. ET; updates Thursday and Friday by the same deadline; game-day report due 90 minutes before scheduled start. For games on other days, reports shift to corresponding days. | Unlisted players are Available unless exempt. Its categories and timing are set out in the SEC Commissioner’s Regulations. |
| ACC, 2025–26 | Reports are submitted daily starting three nights before the game; game-day report due two hours before scheduled game time. | See the ACC availability status definitions and its 2025–26 reporting announcement. |
| Big Ten, 2026 | Midweek and game-day reports use different category lists; the cited announcement does not state a specific deadline. | Applies to games against conference opponents. Players not listed are Available. The Big Ten process announcement includes an “Out (1st Half)” designation. |
| CFP, 2025–26 | Reports begin three days before a playoff game, are updated daily, and include a final report 90 minutes before game time. | Pregame labels are Available, Probable, Questionable, Doubtful and Out; game-day labels are Available, Game Time Decision and Out. See the CFP availability-reporting page. |
How to read a midweek-to-game-day change
A status is a snapshot at the time of that report, not a permanent designation. Under SEC policy, schools should progress statuses gradually and avoid sudden changes unless there are extenuating circumstances. A player listed Questionable earlier may later be reported Available or Out; the newer report is the relevant one for the current status.

What an availability label cannot tell you
- It does not establish a diagnosis. The ACC says its public report gives the status, not the specific reason for uncertainty. It says that uncertainty may relate to injury or illness, eligibility, or personal or family matters. See the ACC reporting announcement.
- It does not predict workload or performance. Available means available under the policy; it does not guarantee a starting role, playing time or effectiveness.
- It does not mean the same thing in every phase. Some systems use a wider set of labels midweek than on game day.
- An absent name is meaningful only if you know the policy’s default. The SEC and Big Ten state that unlisted players are Available, subject to the SEC exemption. Do not assume another system uses the same default.
Quick checklist for interpreting a report
- Identify the competition and season. Confirm whether the policy is SEC, ACC, Big Ten or CFP, and use the rules for that season.
- Check when the report was issued. A midweek designation can be updated before kickoff, and game-day categories may differ.
- Read the status as written. Doubtful is not Out; Questionable means uncertain in the SEC and ACC definitions, not a confirmed 50% real-world forecast.
- Check the omitted-player rule. Do not infer availability from a blank entry unless that policy says unlisted players count as Available.
- Do not infer private medical details. The label reports availability, not necessarily the reason for it.
