dtsh.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL, so the safest fix is to repair Windows rather than download a replacement. If Windows says dtsh.dll is missing, not found, corrupted, or not designed to run on Windows, repair the component store first, then investigate antivirus quarantine or the application reporting the error.
What this file actually does
dtsh.dll is identified as the Detection and Sharing Status API and belongs to the Microsoft Windows Operating System. It is a Win32 DLL associated with Windows shell and network-discovery-related functions. Public documentation about its internal API is limited, so the filename alone cannot identify the exact feature that failed.
Windows has been observed loading this file through Windows Explorer and other shell-related processes. Public inventories also show it in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10-era releases. The exact file version depends on the Windows release and installed build, so there is no single replacement version that is correct for every computer.
On 64-bit Windows, the native 64-bit copy normally belongs in:

The 32-bit copy normally belongs in:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
The names are confusing, but this is standard Windows architecture behavior. Do not swap files between these folders. Microsoft explains the distinction in its File System Redirector documentation.
A legitimate copy should normally be inside the Windows directory and carry a valid Microsoft digital signature. A Microsoft signature does not make every file named dtsh.dll safe, however. The path, signature, file history, and surrounding system activity all matter.
Causes matched to symptoms
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
dtsh.dll is missing after an update or crash |
Deleted or corrupted Windows component | Install updates, then run DISM and SFC |
The code execution cannot proceed because dtsh.dll was not found |
Missing file or missing dependency | Repair Windows and check the application |
The specified module could not be found |
The DLL or one of its dependencies may be absent | Run DISM and SFC; do not assume the named DLL is the only problem |
dtsh.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error |
Corruption, wrong architecture, invalid replacement, or damaged dependency | Remove unofficial replacements and repair Windows |
| The message appeared after antivirus action | Quarantine or a detection involving the file | Review Protection History before restoring anything |
| Only one older program reports the error | That program, its files, or an extension may be damaged | Repair or reinstall the program from its official publisher |
| The error began after a driver or Windows change | A recent system change may have affected dependencies | Try System Restore if a suitable restore point exists |
These messages are generic Windows loader errors. They do not prove that dtsh.dll itself is the root cause.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then repair system files
This is the most reliable starting point for a missing or damaged dtsh.dll.
Recommended Free Tools
Install pending updates
- Select Start > Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on restarting.
- Try the affected application or Windows feature again.
Updates can restore protected components and repair servicing problems. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Run DISM before SFC
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- When DISM completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its repair source. SFC scans protected system files and can replace damaged copies with correct cached versions. The supported procedure is documented in Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, restart and retest. If it reports that it found no integrity violations but the error continues, the problem may be a dependency, application installation, or shell extension rather than dtsh.dll itself.

It is optional, and it does not replace Windows servicing or the definitive reinstall of an application that owns the failure.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Windows Security or another antivirus product may quarantine a system file after a false detection. Do not immediately restore dtsh.dll just because an application now reports it as missing.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the entry related to
dtsh.dll, if one exists. - Record the detected path and action.
- Check whether the file was inside the Windows directory.
- Inspect its digital signature before considering restoration.
- Run a full malware scan.
A genuine Windows copy should normally be in a Windows system directory and signed by Microsoft. A copy found in a temporary folder, a download directory, or an unrelated application folder deserves additional scrutiny.
Microsoft Defender provides Restore and Allow on device actions, but restoring a malicious or modified file can make the problem worse. Microsoft describes these actions in its Protection History guidance.
If the file was quarantined and you are not certain it is a false positive, leave it quarantined and use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC to rebuild the protected Windows copy. Update antivirus signatures and submit a suspected false positive to the security vendor instead of disabling protection.
Fix 3: Repair the application that displays the message
Although dtsh.dll is a Windows component, one application may be the first place a damaged dependency becomes visible.
If only one program reports the error:
- Close the program.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Open its menu and choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not work, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the program’s local settings.
- If the problem remains, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer from the application publisher’s official website.
- Install it again and test.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files command before reinstalling the entire game.

- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
Do not assume that reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will restore dtsh.dll. There is no verified evidence that this file belongs to any of those redistributable packages. Reinstalling the affected application is useful when its own files, plugins, or dependencies are damaged, but it is not a substitute for repairing Windows.
Fix 4: Check for a wrong architecture or an unofficial replacement
A 32-bit DLL placed in the wrong location can produce “not designed to run on Windows” or loader errors. The same is true of a file copied from another Windows release.
Check the locations without replacing anything:
- Press Win+E to open File Explorer.
- Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar. - Look for
dtsh.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also inspect
%windir%SysWOW64. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the Microsoft signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
Do not copy a file from SysWOW64 into System32, or the reverse. Do not copy a file from another PC unless it is known to be from the exact same Windows build and architecture, and the replacement is being performed under appropriate Microsoft repair guidance.
The safest correction for a wrong or modified file is to remove the unofficial replacement and run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
Do not use regsvr32 as the normal fix
regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Public metadata for dtsh.dll lists COM-related exports including DllGetClassObject and DllCanUnloadNow, but not DllRegisterServer.

Fix 5: Update or reinstall a related driver only when evidence points there
A driver is not verified as the owner of dtsh.dll, so do not begin by reinstalling every driver. Consider this step if the error started immediately after a network, display, storage, or motherboard driver change and Windows repair did not help.
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing feature.
- Right-click the suspected device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Roll Back Driver if the option is available and the problem began after an update.
- Otherwise select Update driver and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
Obtain drivers from the computer or hardware manufacturer, not from a random driver repository. If Windows reports a device error, record its exact code before changing anything.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen checking dozens of drivers manually is the main obstacle, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported driver issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when one program alone reports dtsh.dll.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent system change
If the error began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or other system change, System Restore may undo the change.
- Press Win+R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the programs and drivers that will be changed.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally does not remove personal documents, but it can roll back system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the file
If DISM fails, note the exact error and restart before trying once more from an administrator Command Prompt. If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC.

- Disconnect unnecessary external devices.
- Try System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
- Use Windows recovery options if the system remains unstable.
Microsoft’s Windows recovery options include Startup Repair, System Restore, Reset this PC, and reinstall options. A repair installation or reset should be considered only after backing up data and confirming that ordinary servicing repair has failed.
Should you download dtsh.dll?
No. There is no verified official standalone dtsh.dll download package. Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong Windows build, or the wrong architecture, and manual copying often leaves the underlying component-store or dependency problem untouched.

FAQ
Is dtsh.dll safe?
It is legitimate when it is a Microsoft-signed Windows file in the expected Windows directory. Verify the path and digital signature rather than trusting the filename alone.
Is dtsh.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No evidence supports that classification. It is identified as a Windows component, not as a verified runtime file from those packages.
Does Windows 11 use the same dtsh.dll as Windows 10?
Not necessarily. Public inventories show different versions across Windows releases, and exact files depend on the installed build. Do not use a single “latest” DLL as a universal replacement.
Why does the message say a module could not be found when dtsh.dll exists?
Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the DLL. The message does not prove that the visible file is the only missing component.
Should I register dtsh.dll?
No. regsvr32 is not the normal repair method because the available public export information does not show the usual self-registration entry point.
What if the error appears in only one program?
Repair or reinstall that program, then run DISM and SFC if Windows components may also be damaged. The application may be exposing a dependency problem rather than owning dtsh.dll.
