If comctl32.dll is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, first identify whether the failure affects one program or Windows applications generally. The comctl32.dll error also needs one more distinction: the path named in the message, the program’s architecture, and whether Windows reports a missing file, Bad Image, or entry point problem.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing system files, record:
- The exact program or game that fails.
- The complete error message and status code.
- The full path shown in the message, especially whether it points to
System32,SysWOW64, orWinSxS. - Whether one application fails or several unrelated applications fail.
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the problem began after Windows Update, a cleanup utility, antivirus detection, software installation, or malware incident.
- Whether the same program works under another Windows user account.
This distinction determines the correct repair. One damaged game usually needs application repair or reinstallation. Several unrelated programs failing, particularly with a WinSxS path, points toward Windows servicing, a damaged component store, or a broken side-by-side assembly.

What comctl32.dll is
comctl32.dll is the Microsoft Windows Common Controls library. It provides standard graphical controls used by Win32 applications, including:
- List views
- Tree views
- Toolbars
- Tabs
- Progress bars
- Status bars
- Buttons and other standard interface elements
Windows applications use the Common Controls API rather than implementing every standard interface element themselves. Microsoft documents initialization through APIs such as InitCommonControlsEx, and describes Common Controls as a component included with the Windows operating system in its Common Controls documentation.

This is a Windows system component owned by Microsoft. It is not normally installed by a particular game, Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET package.
There is no general-purpose standalone Microsoft comctl32.dll installer. Common Controls version 5 and the version 6 side-by-side assembly are supplied as part of Windows. Microsoft identifies version 6 as a Windows side-by-side assembly rather than a separately redistributable DLL in its documentation for supported Microsoft side-by-side assemblies.
Why file versions do not identify a universal replacement
You may see different file versions depending on Windows release, update level, architecture, and component variant. Examples found on Windows systems include 64-bit version 5.82.19041.488, 32-bit version 5.82.19041.1, and other 5.82 builds associated with different Windows releases.

Do not search for a matching number and download a DLL from a third-party site. Windows servicing must restore the copy appropriate for your installation.
Microsoft also documents Common Controls API and assembly versions including 5.81, 5.82, 6.0, and 6.10. Those are API or assembly versions, not a single universal current file version. See Common Control Versions.
Common comctl32.dll error messages
You may see wording similar to one of these messages:
The code execution cannot proceed because COMCTL32.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Another common form is:
This application failed to start because comctl32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
A Windows Bad Image message may look like this:
[path]\comctl32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.
Error status: 0xc000007b
The exact path, wording, and status code vary. A message such as “the module was not found,” “could not be loaded,” or “entry point not found” does not always mean that comctl32.dll itself is the only damaged file. The loader may be reporting a missing dependency, a wrong-architecture module, or a side-by-side manifest problem.
A crash report that lists comctl32.dll as the “faulting module” is also different from a missing-DLL message. The application may have made an invalid UI call or corrupted memory, with the failure becoming visible inside the Windows library. If only one program crashes and Windows repair checks are clean, investigate that application before replacing system components.
The fastest safe fix order
Use this order:
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Run SFC after DISM completes.
- Repair or reinstall the affected application if only one program fails.
- Check antivirus quarantine.
- Use System Restore or Windows repair reinstall if system repair cannot restore the component.
- Investigate architecture, manifests, malware, or storage problems if the error continues.
The first two repair commands are intentionally in this order. Microsoft recommends repairing the Windows image with DISM before running System File Checker.

An incomplete or damaged update can affect the Windows component store, Common Controls assemblies, or the manifest information that selects them.
- Select Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft’s current instructions are available at Install Windows Updates.
If the update itself fails, restart and try Windows Update again. If it repeatedly fails or the problem began immediately after a particular update, continue with DISM and SFC rather than copying a replacement DLL.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair for a genuine missing or corrupted Windows copy of comctl32.dll, a damaged component store, or a broken side-by-side assembly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Allow the operation to finish. It may appear to pause at a percentage for some time.
- Wait for DISM to report whether the restore completed successfully.
DISM repairs the Windows image and component store. It does not simply copy a random file into a system directory.
Run SFC after DISM
After DISM completes, leave the elevated Command Prompt open and run:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the affected application.
Possible SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC did not find a protected-file problem.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Windows repaired one or more protected files.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Continue with the recovery steps below.
- Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: Restart and try again from an elevated Command Prompt.
Microsoft’s official procedure is Using System File Checker in Windows. Microsoft also documents the SFC command and its options.

Repeated manual SFC and DISM runs can leave you hunting through logs and guessing what changed; Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what is wrong, while the repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, not a requirement, and reinstalling the affected program remains the definitive fix when that program owns the damaged files.
Run a targeted SFC check when appropriate
If the error explicitly names a visible Windows path, you can check that file directly. For example:
sfc /scanfile=C:\Windows\System32\comctl32.dll
Use the actual Windows drive letter and path shown on your computer. On a 64-bit installation, do not change the path to SysWOW64 simply because the failing application is 32-bit. The Windows file-system redirector and SFC determine how system files are handled.
A full sfc /scannow is generally preferable because the failing component may be a side-by-side assembly under WinSxS, a dependency, or another protected file rather than the directly visible System32 copy.
Save SFC details
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"
This creates sfcdetails.txt on the current user’s desktop. The report can show which protected files SFC examined and whether repair failed.
Do not use the report as a reason to manually extract and copy comctl32.dll. The repair source should be Windows servicing, a supported recovery option, or official installation media.
Fix 3: Understand System32, SysWOW64, and WinSxS
Finding one copy of comctl32.dll does not prove that the copy required by the program is healthy.
System32 and SysWOW64
On 64-bit Windows:
%WINDIR%\System32normally contains native 64-bit system files.%WINDIR%\SysWOW64normally contains 32-bit system files used by 32-bit applications.
The names are confusing, but this layout is part of Windows compatibility support. On 32-bit Windows, the system does not have the same 64-bit and 32-bit separation.
Microsoft describes this behavior in File System Redirector.

A 32-bit program must use the 32-bit version of the system component. A 64-bit program must use the 64-bit version. Copying a file from System32 into SysWOW64, or the reverse, can create an architecture mismatch and make the problem worse.
Why the error can mention WinSxS
Windows also stores versioned system assemblies under:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsC:\Windows\WinSxS
An application manifest can request a particular Common Controls assembly. The side-by-side loader then selects the assembly that matches the manifest and Windows installation. An error may therefore mention a path resembling:
C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft.windows.common-controls_...\comctl32.dll
The visible file in System32 may be intact while the requested assembly under WinSxS is incomplete or corrupted. These locations are not interchangeable.
Do not take ownership of WinSxS, delete component folders, or paste a downloaded DLL into the directory. Microsoft explains this architecture in About Side-by-Side Assemblies and provides guidance about the Windows component store and WinSxS.
When an error names WinSxS, use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or a supported Windows repair installation.

If Windows applications work normally and only one game or program reports the error, the application installation is more likely to be damaged than the Windows copy of Common Controls.
Windows DLL search behavior can allow an application directory or application-local manifest to influence which module is loaded. A damaged private file can therefore affect one program while every other program continues to work. Microsoft documents this behavior in Dynamic-link library search order.
Microsoft Store and packaged apps
For a Microsoft Store-style app:
- Select Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If Repair does not help and the option is available, return to the same screen and select Reset. Reset can remove the application’s local data, so read the warning before confirming.
Traditional desktop programs
For a traditional Windows desktop program:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair, Change, or a similarly named maintenance option.
- Complete the installer’s repair process.
- Restart if requested.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the software publisher’s official installer. Do not keep a downloaded comctl32.dll beside the executable as a workaround.
Games
Use the launcher’s built-in file verification feature:
- In Steam, open the game’s Properties, select Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files.
- In Epic Games Launcher, open the game’s three-dot menu, select Manage, and choose Verify.
These operations replace damaged application files without altering Windows’ protected system directories. If verification succeeds but the game still fails, reinstall the game or check the publisher’s documented prerequisites.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and Windows Security
Security software can quarantine a file, block a process, or remove a malicious application-local copy. A filename alone does not establish whether the quarantined file is genuine.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
comctl32.dll, the affected program, or a recently removed file. - Read the detection name and file path carefully.
If the event concerns an unknown file inside a game or application folder, do not restore it merely because its name is comctl32.dll. A malicious copy can use the same filename.
If you are confident the detection concerns a legitimate file, Microsoft allows a quarantined item to be restored, but it warns that Defender may detect it again. The safer response for a Windows system component is normally to repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC rather than restoring an isolated file. See Protection History in the Windows Security app.
Run a full scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
If malware is suspected or normal Windows operation is unreliable, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same screen. Malware may place a fake DLL in an application directory, where DLL search order can cause the program to load it before the genuine Windows library. Microsoft documents the risk in Dynamic-Link Library Security.
After removing malware, run DISM and SFC again. If the infection may have exposed passwords or other credentials, change those credentials from a known-clean device.
Fix 6: Do not use Windows Features as a generic DLL repair
You can inspect optional Windows components by opening:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Control Panel
- Programs
- Turn Windows features on or off
There is no general “Common Controls” checkbox that reinstalls the normal Windows comctl32.dll. Do not randomly enable or disable .NET Framework, legacy components, or other features to resolve this error.
Windows Features are relevant only when the error names a component that actually belongs to an optional feature. For example, a message involving a .NET assembly may justify checking the corresponding .NET installation. A message involving comctl32.dll alone does not.
The same distinction applies to Visual C++ Redistributable packages and DirectX:
- Visual C++ packages such as
vc_redist.x86.exe,vc_redist.x64.exe, andvc_redist.arm64.exeprovide C and C++ runtime libraries. They are relevant when the error names files such asVCRUNTIME140.dllorMSVCP140.dll. See Microsoft’s Latest Supported Visual C++ Redistributable Downloads. - The DirectX End-User Runtimes package supplies legacy components such as D3DX, XInput, XAudio, and XACT files. It does not provide
comctl32.dll. - Reinstalling .NET, Visual C++, or DirectX is not a general repair for a Common Controls error.
Fix 7: Investigate architecture and manifest problems
Architecture problems are especially likely when the message says “entry point not found,” “bad image,” or “could not be loaded” rather than simply “file not found.”
Check these possibilities:
- A 32-bit application is loading an incompatible 64-bit private DLL.
- A 64-bit application is being given a 32-bit private DLL.
- The application manifest requests a Common Controls version that is unavailable or damaged.
- A dependency of
comctl32.dllis missing. - An old program is incompatible with the current Windows environment.
- A damaged application-local copy is being loaded before the system copy.
Do not try to fix architecture errors by copying files between System32 and SysWOW64. Repair the application and Windows component store instead.
If the error concerns an old application, test its official compatibility settings or updated release. An application that uses older Common Controls behavior may need a vendor-provided update rather than a replacement system DLL.
Fix 8: Update a driver only when the evidence points to a driver
A graphics-driver reinstall is not a primary fix for a missing comctl32.dll. Common Controls is a Windows user-interface library, not a graphics driver.
Driver work is appropriate when:
- The error also identifies a driver module.
- The failure occurs only during a graphics-intensive operation.
- Device Manager reports a device problem.
- The application vendor specifically identifies a driver compatibility issue.
- The crash report points to a display or input driver rather than only to Common Controls.
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the reported device, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test the application again.
For a clean reinstall, obtain the driver from the computer, motherboard, or graphics-device manufacturer. Do not uninstall functioning drivers merely because comctl32.dll appears in an error.
Manually checking a long list of hardware vendors means hunting versions and guessing which of dozens of drivers is stale; Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing what is wrong, while driver installation is done by the full version. It is optional and not a general fix for comctl32.dll.
Why regsvr32 is not the repair
Do not run this as a routine fix:
regsvr32 comctl32.dll
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose the COM registration entry point DllRegisterServer. The ordinary Windows Common Controls library is a Win32 system library used through APIs such as InitCommonControlsEx; it is not repaired by registering it as a COM server.
Running the command may produce an error such as:
The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why downloading or copying comctl32.dll is unsafe
Do not download comctl32.dll from a random DLL download website. This approach can fail because:
- The file may contain malware.
- The file may be modified or falsely labeled.
- The version may not match your Windows build.
- The architecture may be wrong.
- The application may require a side-by-side assembly rather than the visible system copy.
- A missing dependency or manifest problem will remain.
- Windows Resource Protection may replace or reject the copied file.
- Copying into
WinSxScan damage servicing and component-store consistency.
Do not manually copy the DLL into:
C:\Windows\System32
C:\Windows\SysWOW64
C:\Windows\WinSxS
Do not take ownership of protected Windows folders to force the copy. Windows includes servicing mechanisms specifically for restoring protected operating-system files. Microsoft describes this protection through Windows Resource Protection.
The safe official sources are Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, Windows recovery, and Microsoft installation media. An application-specific copy should come only from repairing or reinstalling that application through its official installer or launcher.
comctl32.dll versus comctl32.ocx
comctl32.dll and comctl32.ocx are different files used by different technologies.
comctl32.dllis the Windows Common Controls Win32 component.comctl32.ocxis a legacy Visual Basic 6 ActiveX control.
If the error explicitly says COMCTL32.OCX, do not apply the Windows DLL instructions blindly. Microsoft provides the Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Common Controls package, whose filename is visualbasic6-kb896559-v1-enu.exe. Microsoft states that the package updates mscomctl.ocx and comctl32.ocx, and does not install those files if they were not already present.
An OCX may also require registration, depending on the application and package instructions. That is a separate legacy ActiveX repair scenario. The fact that an OCX sometimes uses regsvr32 does not make regsvr32 comctl32.dll appropriate.
Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or other system change and a restore point exists.
From normal Windows:
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Next.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, updates, and installed programs without removing personal documents. It does not replace a full backup. Microsoft explains the feature in System Restore.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Use that option only when the timing clearly connects the update to the failure.
Fix 10: Repair-install Windows 11 when DISM and SFC cannot recover
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component store, Windows 11 may provide a supported reinstall of the current version:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
Microsoft states that this process reinstalls the same Windows version, repairs system files and components, and preserves applications, files, and settings. Availability varies by edition, configuration, and management policy. See Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows.
If that option is unavailable, use Microsoft’s official Download Windows 11 page to obtain installation media and review the repair-installation instructions. Back up important data before making major recovery changes.

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C:\ /offwindir=C:\Windows
For example, if Windows is on drive D:, use:
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=D:\ /offwindir=D:\Windows
Microsoft documents the /offbootdir and /offwindir parameters in its SFC command reference.
From Troubleshoot > Advanced options, also consider:
- System Restore if the problem began after a recent system change.
- Uninstall Updates if an update immediately preceded the failure.
- Startup Repair when Windows has broader boot problems.
If malware or serious disk corruption is suspected, back up important data and use a supported Windows recovery or reinstall path rather than repeatedly replacing individual files.
Fix 11: Investigate persistent corruption or storage problems
If SFC repairs comctl32.dll repeatedly and the error returns, the file may not be the root cause. Possible causes include:

Back up important files and review Windows servicing results. Use the storage diagnostic tools supplied by the PC or drive manufacturer. If Windows remains unstable after Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, application repair, and the supported Windows repair reinstall, a clean installation may be necessary.
Do not infer malware, disk failure, or a hardware fault from the filename alone. Use the evidence from Protection History, SFC results, event logs, storage diagnostics, and the timing of the failure.

Frequently asked questions
Is comctl32.dll a Windows file?
Yes. It is the Microsoft Windows Common Controls library, a system component used by Win32 applications for standard interface controls.
Is comctl32.dll part of Visual C++ Redistributable?
No. Visual C++ packages provide C and C++ runtime libraries. Install or repair one only when the error names a Visual C++ runtime file such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll.

No. DirectX legacy packages provide components such as D3DX, XInput, XAudio, and XACT. They do not provide the Windows Common Controls library.
Why does the file exist in System32 but Windows still report it missing?
The program may be requesting a side-by-side assembly under WinSxS, loading a private application copy, using the wrong architecture, or failing because a dependency or manifest is damaged. The visible System32 file is not necessarily the file the loader needed.
Should I copy the 64-bit file into SysWOW64?
No. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Copying between them can create an architecture mismatch.
Should I register comctl32.dll with regsvr32?
No. regsvr32 applies to self-registering COM DLLs that expose DllRegisterServer. It is not a repair command for the Windows Common Controls library.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I download a replacement DLL?
Do not use random DLL download sites. Restore the component through Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or Windows installation media. Repair the application itself if only one program fails.
What if the error says comctl32.ocx?
That is a separate legacy Visual Basic 6 ActiveX file. Use Microsoft’s Visual Basic 6.0 Common Controls package and follow the application’s documented instructions. Do not confuse it with comctl32.dll.
Should I update my graphics driver?
Not as a general fix. Update a driver only when the error or diagnostic evidence also identifies a driver problem, or when the affected application’s vendor specifically recommends it.
What information should I provide when asking for help?
Include:
- The complete error text and status code.
- The executable or program name.
- The full path shown in the error.
- Windows edition, version, build, and architecture.
- Whether one program or many programs fail.
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The results of DISM and SFC.
- Any relevant Windows Security Protection History event.
- Whether the problem began after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or malware incident.
That information distinguishes a damaged Windows component from an application-local file, a side-by-side assembly failure, an architecture mismatch, and a crash that merely names comctl32.dll.
