Where to find Commander Gaius
Commander Gaius is a mounted knight who uses gravity magic. His arena is at the back of Shadow Keep, in the Scaduview area. A route described by Windows Central goes through the keep’s rafters and uses elevators to reach the back gate.
Prepare before the fight
Activate your DLC blessings
Before retrying, look for Scadutree Fragments and Revered Spirit Ashes. According to the official Elden Ring site, Scadutree Blessing raises your attack power and damage negation, while Revered Spirit Ash Blessing raises the attack power and damage negation of summoned spirits and Torrent. Find the items, then strengthen the blessings at a Site of Grace. Once activated, their effects apply in DLC areas and remain active there.
Choose equipment for dodging and survival
Windows Central recommends physical-damage mitigation and a medium equipment load so you retain effective dodging. These are options, not requirements. The same guide recommends Black Knife Tiche for her evasiveness and damage, but any summon that suits your build is optional.

How to avoid Gaius’s attacks
Opening boar charge
Gaius starts by sending the boar straight at you. The timing is tight: roll through or to the side just as the mount reaches you, rather than rolling too early or backing straight away. A shield that blocks physical damage can stop the charge, but expect it to consume substantial stamina. Windows Central’s guide describes both approaches.
Lance and boar attack strings
Gaius mixes lance swipes and thrusts with boar headbutts, slams and kicks. Roll through the swipes and thrusts rather than retreating in a straight line. For a headbutt, move or dodge into the boar’s attack; for its overhead slam, dodge sideways. The boar may kick if you stay behind it, so do not treat its rear as a safe position. Windows Central details these cues, while EIP also recommends attacking after a combo ends.

Gravity attacks
A purple sword wave can send rocks up from the ground. A drawn-back sword may signal a thrust or a gravity projectile; Windows Central recommends a well-timed forward dodge for the latter. Watch for the cue rather than assuming every pause means the same attack.
Phase-two attacks
At roughly half health, Gaius transitions to additional gravity attacks, according to the Windows Central guide. When he begins an aerial spin and slam, roll forward after the spin starts to evade the impact and its expanding gravity damage. His gravity well pulses before exploding: dodge the pulses or leave the affected area early.

When to attack
Wait for a full string to finish, then use the opening to attack. Staying near Gaius’s side can make him turn, creating opportunities, but watch for the boar’s quick kick when you are behind it. When he advances, an angled dodge toward him is generally more useful than rolling directly away, according to GamesRadar. These are guide tactics, not guaranteed frame-perfect timings.
What is Commander Gaius weak to?
Windows Central reports that Gaius is susceptible to non-Madness status effects, particularly Bleed and Frostbite. GamesRadar says fire appears effective based on the author’s experience. The cited guides do not supply numerical resistances or establish one damage type as universally best, so use the status or damage option your build can apply reliably rather than treating fire, Bleed or Frostbite as a proven ranking.

Pick a strategy that fits your build

What defeating Gaius rewards
GamesRadar reports a reward of 230,000 Runes, the Remembrance of the Wild Boar Rider and armor-related rewards.
