To change the videos going out on a YouTube Live broadcast, update the playlist in OBS while keeping the same encoder session connected. OBS’s VLC Video Source can play a playlist, but neither OBS nor YouTube promises that editing it midstream will be invisible to viewers. Rehearse the exact change first, and use a standby scene or transition to cover the edit where possible.
What “changing the playlist” means here
This guide covers changing the sequence of media files sent by an encoder such as OBS to an active YouTube Live broadcast. The playlist is part of the outgoing production in OBS; YouTube’s Live Control Room handles the stream connection and encoder settings.
YouTube also has a viewer-facing queue feature, but that concerns a person’s watch session, not the video being broadcast by a channel. It is not a method for replacing the outgoing live playlist. YouTube Help: queue videos [c004]
Set up a playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video Source. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS: VLC Video Source [c001]
- Choose or create the scene for the video. In OBS, add a VLC Video Source to the scene that will feed your broadcast.
- Populate the source playlist. Add the media files or paths in the order you want them to play. Use the source’s loop or shuffle controls if they fit your programme. OBS also documents visibility behavior settings for this source; check the selected behavior before relying on a source being hidden and shown during a live change. [c001]
- Connect the encoder to YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, use the intended stream and its encoder setup, including the stream key and server URL. Start the encoder using your established broadcast setup. YouTube Help: configure encoder settings [c002]
Change the playlist while live
- Prepare the replacement content before changing the live output. Confirm the file or path is available to OBS and that the intended next item is in the playlist.
- Keep the active OBS encoder session connected. Change the playlist or source output inside OBS rather than intentionally stopping and restarting the stream. Maintaining the same encoder session is the practical way to avoid a planned broadcast restart; it does not guarantee that playback will have no visible or audible gap. [c001] [c002]
- Cover the edit if your scene setup allows it. Switch to a standby scene or use a transition, make the playlist change, then return to the VLC Video Source. This is operational advice based on OBS’s scene and source model, not a YouTube-certified guarantee of seamless switching. OBS: scenes and sources [c003]
- Check the result in the live programme. Confirm the picture and audio resumed, and that the intended item began at the right point. Avoid assuming that an edit preserves the current item’s playback position; test the exact source behavior you plan to use.
Rehearse before the broadcast
OBS describes how its VLC Video Source plays playlists and how source visibility works, but does not state that editing an active playlist is always seamless. Test with the same OBS version, source configuration, media, and scene transitions you will use on air. Watch and listen for:

- a blank frame or media reload;
- a source that remains hidden or does not return as expected;
- an audio gap, overlap, or unexpected restart;
- the next item starting at an unintended point; and
- an encoder disconnect or stream restart.
If an edit produces a noticeable break, use a standby scene for the change or schedule the playlist update between broadcasts. Do not promise viewers a zero-interruption switch unless your own setup has demonstrated it under the conditions you will use.
