For a first Commander game, buy a reasonably priced preconstructed deck. It is a legal, ready-to-play 100-card deck that removes the hardest first hurdles: choosing a commander, checking color identity, sourcing 100 cards and making the deck function together. Build from singles instead when you already know the commander or theme you want, own many usable cards, or need precise control over budget, power and every card slot.
Neither route is automatically cheaper. Compare the exact sealed product with the exact 99-card list at the same time, in the same currency and region, while accounting for shipping, card finish and cards you already own.

Commander’s deck structure determines what you are buying
Commander is normally a four-player format. Your deck has one commander card and 99 other cards, for 100 cards total. Outside basic lands, the deck follows the singleton rule: you generally play no more than one card with a particular name. Your commander’s color identity limits every card you may include, including colored mana symbols in rules text and activated abilities.
That structure makes a deck from singles more involved than simply selecting 100 powerful cards. Every card has to be legal under the commander’s color identity, fit the singleton restriction, and contribute to a coherent plan. A precon has already gone through those checks. EDHREC describes preconstructed decks as legal Commander decks, so a sealed precon is not a demonstration list or a partial product; it is intended to go straight to a Commander table.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Basic lands are the principal singleton exception. You can usually include multiple copies of a basic land, subject to the deck’s color identity and the format’s current rules. Check the current Commander rules and your play group’s expectations if you are using unusual cards or a special commander.
What a Commander precon gives you immediately
A precon is a sealed product containing a complete deck list, commander and supporting cards. Wizards of the Coast describes its Foundations products this way: Each Foundations Commander deck contains a ready-to-play 100-card Commander deck.
Foundations Commander decks released on October 2, 2026, with preorders offered through local game stores, TCGplayer, Amazon and other retailers.
“Ready to play” has practical value beyond the card count:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- You make one purchase instead of tracking dozens of listings.
- You receive a functioning mana base, card-draw package, interaction and win conditions designed to work together.
- You can use the printed deck list to replace cards later without reconstructing the original deck.
- You have a clear baseline for discussing the deck’s expected power with a new play group.
A precon is not guaranteed to match your preferred strategy or a pod’s exact power target. It may contain cards you would never choose for a custom list, and its mana base or interaction suite may be less precise than a focused singles build. Its advantage is that those compromises have already been assembled into a playable whole.
Building from singles: the workflow and the trade-off
Buying singles gives you control over the commander, theme, curve, interaction, lands, card printings and budget. TCGplayer’s deckbuilding guidance frames the first decision around whether you will use cards you already own or purchase singles, and points builders toward online deckbuilding tools and EDHREC searches by commander or mechanical theme.

- Define the game you want to play. Write down a commander or a specific theme, the colors you want, your approximate budget and the power level your group expects.
- Check color identity before choosing cards. A card can be unavailable even when its effect looks perfect if it contains a prohibited colored mana symbol. Confirm the commander and every card against current Commander legality.
- Sketch the deck’s jobs. Decide how the list will make mana, draw cards, interact, advance its main plan and finish a game. A theme is not enough if the 99 cards do not support those functions.
- Use a deckbuilding tool and reference lists. Search EDHREC by commander or mechanical theme for commonly played options, then make your own choices instead of importing a list blindly.
- Choose exact printings and finishes. Set, collector number, language, condition and foil or nonfoil finish can change both legality details and price.
- Price the complete list, not just the expensive cards. Include basic and nonbasic lands, sleeves if needed, shipping and any minimum-order fees. Split orders can erase an apparent singles discount.
- Place orders and verify the shipment. Sort cards by the deck list, check quantities and inspect condition before sleeving.
- Playtest before making more purchases. Note whether the deck misses land drops, lacks interaction or draws the wrong half of its plan. Replace cards based on observed problems rather than popularity alone.
The cost of this control is time. You must make choices, validate legality, compare sellers, track several shipments and accept responsibility for whether the final 100 cards actually function together.
Is a precon cheaper than singles?
There is no universal price winner. The answer changes with the exact product, release timing, reprints, scarcity, your location, shipping and the cards already in your collection. Compare like with like: the sealed precon available to you versus the same deck list purchased as singles, on the same date and in the same currency.
Published price snapshots
| Source and date | What was measured | Reported figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| TCGplayer buying guide, May 27, 2026 | Market prices for three selected Commander products | $65.17, $190.87 and $86.24 | These are snapshots for selected products, not a price range that applies to every precon. |
| The Pod Companion, October 18, 2026 | Median singles value across its tracked paper Commander precon corpus | $104 | A corpus median is not the cash price of a sealed deck or the amount every buyer can recover. |
The Pod Companion notes that exact set, collector number and finish matter. A name-only lookup can attach the wrong price to a card that has several printings, languages or finishes. When comparing a box with singles, record the set code, collector number, language, condition, finish and seller for every meaningful price.
When singles can cost less
Singles often win when you already own basics, lands, staple draw or interaction, or when you need only a narrow group of cards for a known plan. You can omit every card that does not serve that plan and avoid paying for a complete sealed shell.
When the precon can cost less
A precon can be the better value when you need most of its 100 cards. One sealed purchase avoids separate shipping charges and the time spent finding low-cost cards across multiple sellers. Reprints and a product’s initial availability can also make a sealed deck temporarily cheaper than buying its most sought-after cards individually.

Why “singles value” is not money in your pocket
A published singles total is an estimate of what cards might sell for, not what a buyer realizes. Selling or trading 100 cards requires listing, packing and shipping, and may involve marketplace fees, returns and unsold inventory. A precon’s value to a player is therefore better measured by playable cards and convenience than by adding up theoretical resale prices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCustomization: exact control versus a working baseline
What singles let you tune
- Commander and theme: Choose the exact legend and mechanical identity you want rather than adapting to a product’s headline strategy.
- Mana curve: Concentrate cards at the costs your plan can support and remove expensive cards that sit dead in hand.
- Interaction: Select the precise mix of removal, counterspells, graveyard hate, protection and board wipes your pod requires.
- Power target: Build toward a casual core, an upgraded list, an optimized list or a competitive environment without inheriting a precon’s assumptions.
- Budget and printings: Choose inexpensive versions, preferred artwork or specific finishes card by card.
The downside is that every decision is yours. A highly customized list can still fail if it has too few lands, too little card draw or cards that pull in incompatible directions.
What a precon lets you customize later
With a precon, customization starts from a tested shell. Play it as supplied, learn which cards advance the plan and identify cards that regularly underperform. Then make targeted swaps: improve the mana base, replace narrow effects, add interaction your group expects or strengthen the deck’s primary win condition. You do not need to buy 100 new cards to change the deck; a small number of deliberate substitutions can teach you more about deck construction than copying an untested list.
Convenience and learning
A precon is the shortest path from purchase to a first game. You open one product, sleeve the cards, read the commander and start learning how the deck works. That matters when friends are waiting to play or when you are still learning phases, timing and Commander’s multiplayer politics.
Singles provide a different learning experience. The planning process teaches why a deck needs a balanced mana base, card advantage, answers and a coherent finish. It also exposes you to legality checks, price comparison and the effect of card printings on cost. That education is valuable, but it is not a substitute for having a playable deck tonight.

Choose according to your situation
| Reader situation | Better starting path | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| First Commander deck and you want to play tonight | Precon | A ready-to-play 100-card product minimizes sourcing and construction. |
| You have a favorite commander or narrow theme | Singles | Every slot can serve that plan instead of adapting to a broad precon shell. |
| You own a large collection | Singles, or a precon followed by upgrades | Cards you already own reduce the incremental cost of either route. |
| You want to learn deck construction | Precon first, then upgrade | A functioning baseline lets you connect each swap to an observed problem. |
| You need a specific power bracket | Singles or a carefully selected precon | A custom list is easier to tune precisely; a precon requires checking its actual list and discussing expectations. |
| You want one particular card | Buy the single | Do not purchase 99 unwanted cards to obtain one card. |
Match the deck to your play group
Before buying, ask the people you will play with what they consider appropriate. EDHREC documents bracket labels including Exhibition, Core, Upgraded, Optimized and cEDH. These labels help start a conversation, but they are not a universal substitute for your group’s own rules. Ask whether fast combos, mass land destruction, proxies, expensive staples or commanders with repeated extra turns are acceptable.
A precon may be a comfortable baseline for a casual pod, while a singles list may be necessary when your group expects a tightly tuned curve and specific answers. Conversely, upgrading a precon can be preferable when everyone wants recognizable, moderate-power games. The important check is agreement before the first shuffle, not a label chosen after a mismatch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare one precon with its singles list
- Fix the comparison date and region. Record the date, currency and marketplace location. Prices move after releases, reprints and tournament attention.
- Identify the exact sealed product. Write down the product name, deck name, release, language and whether the listing is new and sealed.
- Export the exact 100-card list. Include the commander, the 99, basic lands and any alternate-command-zone cards supplied with the product.
- Match each card precisely. Use set code, collector number and finish rather than a name-only search.
- Build the singles total. Use the lowest realistic delivered price, not the cheapest headline listing before postage, taxes or minimum-order requirements.
- Separate cards you already own. Show both the full replacement cost and your actual out-of-pocket cost.
- Add convenience costs. Count shipping, time spent ordering, possible condition disputes and the value of having a playable deck immediately.
- Check the purpose of the purchase. If you want the commander and ten staples, compare the price of those singles with the sealed deck; do not let theoretical value from unwanted cards decide for you.
This method produces a defensible answer for your purchase. A price seen on another date, in another country or for another foil treatment does not.
Upgrading a precon instead of rebuilding from zero
Upgrading is a middle path: you buy a coherent deck, then spend only where the existing list limits your plan. Start by playing the stock version long enough to recognize its patterns. Keep notes on missed land drops, cards that are dead in hand, effects you can never cast and turns where the deck cannot interact.

- Fix the mana base. Replace lands that enter tapped too often or produce the wrong colors, but preserve enough basics and color sources for the deck’s curve.
- Improve card flow. Add reliable draw or repeatable advantage if the deck empties its hand and stalls.
- Upgrade interaction. Replace narrow answers with flexible removal or protection suited to your group.
- Sharpen the main plan. Add cards that advance the commander’s central engine and remove attractive cards that do not contribute.
- Retest after each batch of swaps. Small batches reveal which changes helped; changing half the deck at once hides the evidence.
This route preserves the precon’s learning value while letting your spending follow actual gameplay problems.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every precon is a bargain
Sealed prices vary by release, supply and reprints. Check the current listing and compare the cards you will actually use. A high theoretical singles total does not guarantee a good purchase if most cards will sit in a box.
Assuming singles are always cheaper
Many small orders can produce several shipping charges, and a card you already own has a lower incremental cost than a card you must source. Calculate delivered totals before deciding.
Ignoring color identity
Commander legality is not determined only by a card’s frame or its casting cost. Review colored mana symbols and the commander’s identity before ordering.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Comparing different versions of a card
Set, collector number, language, condition and foil status can materially change the price. Confirm that the listing you found is the version you intended to buy.
Buying for a power level your pod does not want
A deck can be legal and still be a poor social fit. Discuss expectations, then choose a precon, an upgrade path or a singles list that belongs in that environment.
Replacing cards before learning the deck
Some cards look weak until you understand the deck’s sequencing, and some popular upgrades undermine the original plan. Play first, identify a specific problem and make a targeted swap.
A simple decision rule
Choose a precon if your priority is immediate play, a first Commander experience or a functioning starting point for learning. Choose singles if your priority is a known commander, a narrow theme, use of an existing collection or exact control over power and spending. Choose a precon followed by upgrades when you want both a playable deck now and a structured way to learn what to change.
