Error messages you may see
Windows may display one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because commlib.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
- “There was a problem starting commlib.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading commlib.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because commlib.dll was not found.”
- “commlib.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The 60-second answer

commlib.dll is a third-party application DLL. The strongest public file records associate it with the Windows desktop version of LINE, where it has appeared as CommLib Library.
It is not a normal Windows component. Do not copy it into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or download a replacement from a random DLL site. First identify the program that requested it, then repair or reinstall that program from its official installer. For most LINE errors, a clean reinstall is the correct fix.
A “specified module could not be found” message can also mean that commlib.dll is present but one of its dependencies is missing.
What owns commlib.dll
Historical LINE installation records place the file in locations similar to:

The filename is not proven to be globally unique. An older or unrelated application may use the same basename. The executable shown in the error and the folder containing the DLL matter more than the filename alone.
To identify the requesting program:
- Read the error carefully and note the application name.
- Right-click the application shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab and check Target.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
- Search that folder and its subfolders for
commlib.dll.
If the file is beside an old LINE executable, LINE is the likely owner. If it is inside another product’s folder, reinstall that exact product instead.
Check the existing file before changing anything
If commlib.dll is already visible, do not assume it is the correct copy.
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Details tab for the description, product information, and version.
- Open Digital Signatures, if that tab is present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is consistent with LINE Corporation.
- Record the complete path.
One public record identifies a historical Win32/x86 copy signed by LINE Corporation and reports version 3.5.2.42. That is evidence about one copy, not a universal current version. A valid signature does not prove that the file is loaded by the correct program, but an unsigned DLL in an unexpected folder deserves caution.

An incomplete or damaged LINE installation is the most likely cause when LINE itself reports the error.
Before uninstalling, make sure you know your LINE sign-in details and understand what account recovery information is available. Do not delete unrelated personal data folders unless LINE’s own instructions tell you to.
- Close LINE completely. Check the notification area near the clock and exit it if it is still running.
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps and open Apps & features.
- Find LINE.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the entry on Windows 10, and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current Windows desktop installer from the official LINE website or LINE Help Center.
- Run the installer and allow it to create a new installation.
- Start LINE and sign in.
A successful repair normally means LINE opens without the DLL message and a new commlib.dll appears in the application’s own installation folder. Do not copy only the DLL from another computer. The application may require matching libraries, configuration files, and dependencies.

If the installer refuses to run, uninstall remnants only through Windows or LINE’s supported instructions. Avoid deleting arbitrary registry entries or replacing files manually.

Security software may remove a DLL after an update, even when the application previously worked. Treat this as a security decision, not merely a missing-file problem.
In Windows Security:
- Open the Start menu and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
commlib.dllor LINE. - Expand the detection and inspect its path and detection name.
Restore the file only if all of the following are true:
- It was in the expected LINE installation folder.
- The installed copy has a valid signature consistent with LINE Corporation.
- You obtained LINE from its official source.
- The antivirus detection has been assessed rather than ignored.
If the detection is suspicious, leave the file quarantined and reinstall LINE from the official source. Do not blindly disable antivirus protection or add a random DLL to exclusions.
If the file returns to quarantine immediately after reinstalling, update Windows Security, run a full scan, and contact the application vendor with the detection name and file path.
Fix 3: Check Windows and LINE architecture
A 32-bit application needs compatible 32-bit libraries, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. A historical commlib.dll record identifies a Win32/x86 file, and older LINE installations may therefore appear under Program Files (x86).
Check Windows architecture:
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select System, then About.
- Read System type.
Current LINE desktop requirements support 64-bit Windows 10 version 1607 or later and Windows 11. Older 32-bit Windows versions are limited to older LINE releases, while Windows 8.1 and earlier are unsupported by the current desktop application.

If you are using 32-bit Windows, the newest LINE installer may not be compatible. Use a supported operating system or the older LINE release that the vendor explicitly supports. Do not mix a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit LINE folder, or the reverse.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system binaries and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries. Neither folder is the correct destination for a private LINE DLL.

The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named file is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by commlib.dll.
First reinstall LINE, because that restores the application’s expected files as a matching set. If the error remains, note whether the message names another DLL or runtime.
For a Microsoft Visual C++ dependency:
- Check the application documentation or the detailed error for the missing runtime name.
- Download the supported Visual C++ Redistributable package from Microsoft.
- Install the architecture required by the application. A 32-bit application generally needs the x86 package, even on 64-bit Windows.
- Restart Windows and test LINE again.
Do not install Visual C++ merely because commlib.dll has a similar name. No reliable evidence identifies commlib.dll itself as a Microsoft runtime file. Installing a runtime helps only when dependency evidence points to that runtime.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components
Use Windows repair commands when several unrelated applications are failing, Windows Update is damaged, or system files appear corrupted. These commands generally do not recreate a third-party LINE DLL.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files. If both complete successfully but LINE still reports commlib.dll, return to the LINE reinstall and dependency checks rather than repeating SFC indefinitely.

Fix 6: Update Windows and investigate drivers
A driver is not normally the direct owner of commlib.dll, but a wider system problem can begin after a failed update, hardware change, or repair operation.
Check Windows Update:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart.
If the problem began after installing hardware or software, review Device Manager:

- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, or Storage controllers.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and check the status and date.
- Use Update Driver or Roll Back Driver only when the timing and device problem support that diagnosis.
Manually hunting versions across many hardware vendors can be time-consuming; Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies reported driver issues, while driver installation requires the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application that owns commlib.dll remains the correct first repair.
Fix 7: Use System Restore for a recent system change
System Restore is relevant if the error began immediately after a driver, application, or Windows change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Review Scan for affected programs.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs without normally affecting personal files. It is not a replacement for reinstalling LINE, and it will not reliably restore an application DLL removed by antivirus.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not run:
regsvr32 commlib.dll
A private application library is normally loaded directly by its application. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide COM registration functions. If commlib.dll does not export DllRegisterServer, Windows may report that the entry point was not found.

Registration will not repair a missing dependency, restore a quarantined file, or rebuild a damaged LINE installation.
Do not download a replacement DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- The wrong application build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A tampered or malicious file
- A file with incompatible dependencies
- A copy that does not match the rest of the installation
There is no official standalone commlib.dll download identified for this repair. Use the official LINE installer for LINE, and use Microsoft pages for Windows components and Microsoft runtimes. A standalone replacement is safe only when the original vendor supplies it and its signature or hash can be verified.

If reinstalling LINE still fails
Record these details before seeking support:
- The exact error text
- The executable named by the error
- The full path of every
commlib.dllcopy - Whether the file has a valid digital signature
- Your Windows edition and system type
- Whether LINE is a 32-bit build
- Any antivirus detection name
- Whether reinstalling recreated the file
- Whether another dependency is named
If files repeatedly disappear, run a full Windows Security scan and investigate disk health. A failed hard-drive repair, damaged profile, or copied old LINE folder can leave an installation incomplete. Reinstalling an old application folder is not equivalent to installing the program.

Is commlib.dll part of Windows?
No. The strongest public records associate it with LINE, not with Windows system files.
Where should commlib.dll be located?
Normally beside the executable of the application that owns it, such as a LINE installation folder under Program Files or Program Files (x86). It should not normally be in System32 or SysWOW64.
Why does the error appear when the file is visibly present?
The program may be loading from another folder, the visible copy may be the wrong architecture, or a dependency required by the DLL may be missing.
