The Commodore 64 Ultimate is worth considering if you want to use a C64 as a computer—not simply play a short list of retro games. Its FPGA-based design, support for original-style peripherals and modern HDMI and networking make it an unusually complete recreation. The trade-off is a price starting at $299.99 on Commodore’s product page, as accessed October 8, 2026, and an interface that reviewers say can feel slow or obscure if you are new to the system.
What the Commodore 64 Ultimate is—and what it is not
The C64 Ultimate is a new hardware recreation built around an AMD Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA. Commodore says it replicates the original computer at chip level. That makes it different from a basic software emulator, though the implementation claim comes from the manufacturer rather than an independent technical assessment. It is designed to run standard C64 software and GEOS.

Commodore lists HDMI output at 1080p for PAL and NTSC refresh rates, as well as analog video. The combination lets the machine connect to modern displays while retaining support for older equipment. Its feature set also includes USB, Wi-Fi and Ethernet. See Commodore’s product specifications.

#1 Best Overall
The box contents listed by Commodore are:
- The C64 Ultimate computer
- A spiral-bound guide with a quick start
- A USB “cassette” containing more than 100 titles
- A long HDMI cable
- A 12V universal power supply with adapters
The Founders Edition includes additional commemorative items. The listed HDMI cable, guide and power supply mean they are not necessary add-on purchases for a standard setup.
Commodore announced the C64C Ultimate on April 28, 2026, with shipping planned for late 2026. The company says it uses original C64C injection tooling and has performance identical to its predecessor. That schedule is an announced plan, not confirmation of a delivery date; see Commodore’s C64C Ultimate announcement.
How compatible is it with original C64 software and gear?
Commodore advertises the Ultimate as “over 99.9%” compatible with original software and peripherals and promotes access to “10,000+” original C64 games. Those are manufacturer claims on its 2026 product page, not independently established compatibility-test results. The headline figures are useful context, but they do not guarantee that every individual program or device will work exactly as it did on original hardware.

The published specifications include two DB-9 joystick/paddle ports, a Datasette connector and a disk-drive connector. WIRED reports that original peripherals such as joysticks and a Datasette should work. TechRadar says its reviewer tried an original joystick and cassette deck. The machine also adds USB storage, networking and HDMI, giving owners modern ways to load software and connect a display alongside familiar C64-style connections.
If you need a controller, a compatible DB-9 joystick is a reasonable accessory to look for. Verify the connector and compatibility of the specific model before buying; the reviewed sources do not validate a particular joystick.
What reviewers liked—and what got in the way
Authenticity with useful modern connections
WIRED rated the computer 7/10, praising its authentic look and feel, support for classic peripherals and modern connections. Its focused, “digital detox” appeal is part of the point: the Ultimate is built around the experience of using a C64 rather than smoothing every task into a modern-console workflow.
TechRadar reviewer Jennifer Allen reported about 20 hours of testing in a review first published in January 2026. Her reported use included trying the machine out of the box, connecting an original joystick and cassette deck, browsing online and programming in BASIC. She found it could reward sustained exploration as a retro-computing project, while also requiring patience with the interface and loading behavior.

WIRED’s review identifies price and an interface that can feel obscure or slow as drawbacks, particularly for people without nostalgia or prior C64 experience. Matt Kamen’s review dek calls it “an astonishing remake—but daunting if you weren’t there the first time around.” TechRadar’s reported experience similarly suggests that the machine is more satisfying when you are willing to spend time learning it than when you expect instant, console-like access.

It makes sense if you want to use a C64
- You want hands-on access to Commodore 64 software, BASIC or GEOS, rather than only a curated set of games.
- You own original software or peripherals and want a modern display connection alongside classic ports.
- You enjoy exploring retro hardware and can accept old-fashioned menus and loading behavior as part of the experience.
It is a weaker fit if you mainly want easy retro gaming
If your priority is quick access to a limited, curated selection of games, the Ultimate’s broad computer features and learning curve may be more than you want. TechRadar compared it with the Atari 2600+ and THE C64 Mini, describing the Mini as less complete but more accessible. That comparison comes from a January 2026 review; its prices should not be treated as current. Consider whether you value full-computer flexibility and original-peripheral support more than simplicity.
Verdict
The Commodore 64 Ultimate is an ambitious, appealing remake for people who want to experience the C64 as a computer, with its original style of interaction and room to explore software and peripherals. Its FPGA foundation and mix of vintage connections with HDMI and networking give it a distinctive proposition. But at a listed starting price of $299.99, and with reviewers reporting a real learning curve, it is easiest to recommend to retro-computing enthusiasts and curious tinkerers—not to everyone seeking a plug-and-play game box.
