Start by identifying where the problem appears: between your computer and the streaming platform, in viewers’ playback, or in your computer’s rendering and encoding. These symptoms can all feel like “lag,” but they have different causes and fixes. Check OBS Stats first, then follow the matching troubleshooting path below.

First, identify what is failing

In OBS Studio, open View → Stats while streaming or recording a representative test. Look at the dropped-frames and rendering/encoding indicators, and compare them with what viewers describe.

What you notice Likely area to investigate First move
OBS dropped frames are increasing Connection from your computer through your network and ISP to the platform’s ingest server, or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain Lower bitrate, try another ingest server if available, and check the local network path.
OBS shows no meaningful dropped frames, but viewers report buffering Playback conditions, viewer devices and networks, or a bitrate/resolution that is difficult for some viewers Ask whether one viewer or several are affected; consider lowering bitrate or resolution and check the platform’s transcoding options.
Your output looks choppy, or OBS reports encoding/rendering overload GPU, encoder, or scene workload on the streaming computer Reduce rendering load: cap the game’s frame rate, simplify scenes, or lower output resolution or frame rate.

OBS Project says dropped frames generally indicate an unstable connection to the remote server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; it describes such cases as typically outside OBS Studio’s control. The OBS connection guide, dated September 30, 2024, says it is “extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” OBS stream connection troubleshooting.

Fix dropped frames and unstable connections

Set a bitrate your connection can actually sustain

Compare the stream bitrate with your stable upload, not just the headline speed from a one-off speed test. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate; that is guidance, not a guarantee. Other devices uploading, network congestion, Wi-Fi interference, and the route to the ingest server can all affect whether the connection holds.

  1. Run a test stream at the time and from the location you normally broadcast. If possible, use a representative game and scene load.
  2. If dropped frames rise, reduce the video bitrate and test again. Change one setting at a time so you can see whether it helps.
  3. Keep the selected bitrate within both your stable upload capacity and the platform’s current limits and recommendations.

Do not treat any bitrate as correct for every resolution, frame rate, codec, or platform. For YouTube’s recommendations, see Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Check Wi-Fi, router, and the route to ingest

  • If you are broadcasting over Wi-Fi, test with a wired Ethernet connection. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming; an Ethernet cable can help with local wireless problems, but cannot repair an ISP route or platform-side issue.
  • Restart your existing modem and router as an initial check. If instability continues or you are unsure whether equipment is faulty, contact your ISP before buying replacement hardware.
  • Consider possible faults or interruptions involving network cables, network cards, switches, extenders, or the modem/router.
  • If your platform offers a choice of ingest servers, test a different one. A server-specific improvement can help distinguish the route to one ingest point from a broader connection problem.

Check software and drivers methodically

OBS lists VPNs, security software, network-optimization software, and outdated network drivers as possible contributors to connection trouble. For diagnosis, change one item at a time and test again. If you temporarily disable security protection as a controlled check, restore it immediately afterward; do not leave your computer unprotected.

When practical, test another streaming service to help distinguish a general connection problem from one tied to a particular platform or ingest route. A result on one service does not by itself prove that the other service is at fault.

When viewers buffer but OBS looks healthy

A healthy outbound stream does not guarantee smooth playback for every viewer. Viewers have different devices, locations, and internet connections, so first find out whether the problem affects one person or many. A single viewer’s buffering may be local to that viewer; reports from several viewers may point to a stream setting or playback issue worth investigating.

  • Consider reducing bitrate or resolution if the stream is difficult to receive on slower connections.
  • Follow the platform’s current encoder recommendations rather than copying a setting intended for a different resolution, frame rate, or codec.
  • Check whether the platform offers transcoding—the ability for viewers to select a lower playback quality. Availability varies, so do not assume every viewer can choose a lower-resolution version.
  • Ask affected viewers to try another device or network when practical. This can help separate a stream-wide issue from a local playback problem.

Twitch’s official search results surfaced guidance on playback and multiple encodes, but the relevant pages were not readable in the reviewed material; no Twitch-specific bitrate or transcoding guarantee is asserted here. For platform-specific options, consult the service’s current documentation.

Fix choppy output and OBS encoding overload

Encoding overload is a computer-resource problem, not the same as network dropped frames. A game can appear playable while using so much GPU capacity that OBS cannot render and composite its scenes reliably.

  1. Cap the game’s frame rate. An uncapped game can consume GPU headroom OBS needs. Use the game’s frame-rate limit or a suitable graphics-driver limit.
  2. Lower game graphics settings. Reduce demanding settings until the game leaves enough GPU capacity for OBS.
  3. Simplify OBS scenes. Remove sources you do not need and reduce or remove expensive filters and browser sources.
  4. Reduce output resolution. A lower output resolution reduces the rendering and encoding workload.
  5. Try 30 fps instead of 60 fps. If the system cannot sustain the workload, a lower frame rate can be more reliable than keeping a higher setting.
  6. Test again under representative conditions. Check OBS Stats while the game, scenes, audio, and sources are active as they will be during the broadcast.

OBS’s encoding-overload guidance discusses GPU availability, game frame rate and graphics, output settings, and scene complexity as relevant factors. See OBS encoding overload.

Use platform-appropriate YouTube encoder settings

YouTube’s published recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. For example, at 1080p and 60 fps, YouTube recommends 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) and 17 Mbps for H.264. These are YouTube recommendations for those settings—not a promise that your connection or encoder can sustain them. If your stable upload cannot support a recommended bitrate, lower the stream settings rather than allowing persistent connection drops.

Platform requirements and recommendations may change. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings guide before treating a setting as a preset. YouTube also advises testing before going live: use audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, then monitor stream health during the event.

Preflight before a live broadcast

  1. Use the same computer, network, scenes, game load, audio, resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate you intend to use live.
  2. Test long enough to see whether dropped frames or rendering/encoding problems begin to accumulate.
  3. Check OBS Stats and the platform’s stream-health indicators; note whether the issue is network, local rendering/encoding, or viewer playback.
  4. If something fails, make one change, repeat the test, and record the result. Avoid changing several unrelated settings at once.
  5. During the broadcast, keep an eye on stream health so you can respond before a brief issue becomes a prolonged interruption.

Common symptoms and what to try next

Symptom Likely cause Next check
Dropped frames increase steadily in OBS Unstable connection, congested route, or bitrate beyond what the connection can sustain Lower bitrate; test wired networking or another ingest server; check VPN, network software, and drivers.
Only viewers report buffering Viewer-side network/device limits, playback conditions, or an unnecessarily demanding stream Ask how many viewers are affected; review bitrate, resolution, and platform transcoding options.
Game runs, but OBS output stutters or overloads Insufficient GPU/rendering headroom or an expensive scene Cap game FPS, lower graphics or output settings, and simplify sources and filters.
Problem occurs on one ingest server or service but not another A route- or service-specific connection issue may be involved Use the stable available ingest option and continue testing; avoid assuming the entire home connection is defective.
Connection remains unstable after bitrate changes Wi-Fi, local hardware, ISP route, or software interference may remain Test wired, restart existing network equipment, check software/drivers, and ask the ISP before replacing hardware.
