CompactGUI is the free, open-source Windows utility behind claims that large PC games can become substantially smaller without being repackaged. It applies Windows NTFS transparent compression to a game folder, so Steam or another launcher still sees the usual files and Windows decompresses data as the game reads it.
The important qualification is that “no performance loss” is not a universal promise. Many systems see little noticeable gameplay impact, but decompression uses CPU time and can affect loading, streaming or patching. Test one suitable game before converting a whole library.
What CompactGUI actually does
CompactGUI is a third-party graphical front end for Windows’ native file-compression functions. It is free, open source under GPL-3.0, and intended for game or application folders. Get it from the official GitHub Releases page or install it with winget install CompactGUI; avoid similarly named download sites.
This is transparent, lossless file-system compression—not a ZIP, 7z or repacked game. The original bytes are reconstructed exactly when an application reads them, so textures, audio, video and models are not downgraded. Microsoft explains the underlying behavior in its file-compression documentation.

What you need before compressing a game
- Windows 10 or Windows 11: CompactGUI’s relevant newer algorithms are documented for these versions.
- NTFS: The game must be on an NTFS volume. Microsoft’s compact command does not compress FAT or FAT32 volumes.
- A local Windows installation: Copying compressed files to another file system, backup target or computer can produce uncompressed copies.
- Available working space: Game launchers may need temporary space while updating, even when the installed folder is compressed.
- A backup of important saves and configuration: Saves are often outside the installation directory, but the location is title-dependent.
Check the file system
In File Explorer, right-click the drive, choose Properties, and confirm that File system says NTFS. Do not assume an external, removable or shared drive meets this requirement.
Exclude DirectStorage games
The CompactGUI project specifically warns against using its compression on games that use DirectStorage on Windows 11. Its explanation is that DirectStorage is designed to move assets efficiently from SSD storage toward the GPU, and an additional compression/decompression path may interfere with that intended flow. This is a project warning, not proof that every DirectStorage title will fail, so leave those games uncompressed unless you have title-specific evidence and are prepared to test.
How to compress a Steam or other PC game
- Install CompactGUI from GitHub Releases or with WinGet.
- Exit the game, launcher, mod manager and tools that might write to the installation folder.
- Open CompactGUI and select the game directory—for example,
D:SteamLibrarysteamappscommonGameName. - Allow the folder analysis to finish. It gives you a baseline for the original size and likely savings.
- Choose a compression mode. Use XPRESS4K for a performance-first trial or XPRESS8K for the usual balance.
- Start compression and let it finish. Do not force-shut down Windows or remove the drive during the operation.
- Launch the game through its normal launcher. Load a representative save or match and watch startup, transitions, streaming, CPU use and frame-time consistency.
- Run the analysis again after a major update; newly added or replaced files may no longer be compressed.
Choosing XPRESS4K, XPRESS8K, XPRESS16K or LZX
Microsoft documents four executable-oriented algorithms for compact.exe. CompactGUI presents them as practical choices with different speed, space and processing trade-offs.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
| Mode | Trade-off | Good starting point |
|---|---|---|
| XPRESS4K | Fastest and least compact; the safest performance-first experiment | Older or heavily loaded CPUs and games you play constantly |
| XPRESS8K | Middle-ground compression and processing cost | Most users and ordinary active game libraries |
| XPRESS16K | Stronger compression with more processing | Storage-constrained systems after XPRESS testing |
| LZX | Most compact, but slower and heavier | Infrequently played games or cold storage, not automatically active games |
Microsoft describes XPRESS as a fast, low-resource family, while stronger methods trade speed and resources for ratio. The CompactGUI project describes XPRESS8K as its default balance and LZX as more suitable for infrequently accessed data. Maximum compactness is not automatically the best gaming setting.

Usually, average in-game FPS should remain close because the game’s executable and assets are not being altered. However, Windows must spend CPU time decompressing data when it is read. The result depends on the processor, storage device and workload:
- A slow hard drive can sometimes benefit because fewer physical bytes must be read.
- A fast NVMe SSD leaves less disk-read work to remove, so CPU overhead may be more visible.
- A weak or already busy CPU, or a game that constantly streams assets, can expose slower loading or stutter.
- Average FPS can stay unchanged while startup, level transitions, shader compilation or frame-time consistency worsens.
The project’s own wording is “virtually no performance loss,” not a benchmark-backed guarantee of zero impact. Before and after compression, time the same startup and save load, use the same scene or benchmark, observe CPU utilization and frame times, and play long enough to exercise asset streaming. Decompress the folder if behavior is worse.

Which games benefit most?
Compression depends on the files, not the game’s genre or headline install size. Uncompressed or lightly compressed asset data can shrink substantially. Already-compressed video, audio, image, archive and package files may save little. Executables, shader caches, logs and update files can behave differently from the main data archives.
CompactGUI includes analysis and a community results database, but those are user submissions rather than controlled laboratory benchmarks. The repository’s example of ARK: Survival Evolved dropping from 169 GB to 91.2 GB describes one installation state and version, not a normal result for every title. Treat any “up to 60%” claim as a project example, never as an expectation.

How to verify status and measure the saving
From an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell, Microsoft’s command can report the state of a directory:
compact /q /s:"D:SteamLibrarysteamappscommonGameName"
Compare the folder’s original size with Size on disk, note files skipped or processed, and confirm that the game launches. A compressed folder can grow after updates even when the game remains functional.

compact /u /s:"D:SteamLibrarysteamappscommonGameName" /exe:XPRESS8K *.*
Confirm the exact syntax and selected algorithm in the current Microsoft documentation. If the game still misbehaves, run Steam’s or the launcher’s file-verification/repair function, disable mods temporarily, restart Windows if files are locked, and restore a backup only if decompression and verification do not resolve the issue.
Maintenance after patches, moves and backups
Updates can undo the saving
Installers replace or add files, and those files may not retain the previous compression state. Microsoft notes that installers are responsible for recompressing overwritten files when executable-oriented compression is used. Recheck the folder after major patches and recompress only after the launcher has finished. Keep spare space for the update process itself.
Copying is not the same as archiving
The CompactGUI wiki warns that copying or moving compressed files can create uncompressed copies. This matters when migrating to another drive, restoring a backup, synchronizing cloud storage or using a different operating system. NTFS compression is a file-system feature, not portable archive content.
Alternatives and when they make more sense
- Manual
compact.exe: Free, built into supported Windows versions and scriptable, but easier to aim at the wrong path and less convenient for analysis. - Explorer’s “Compress contents to save disk space”: Useful for traditional NTFS compression, but it is not necessarily equivalent to CompactGUI’s XPRESS8K or LZX executable-oriented choices.
- Removing optional content: Uninstalling language packs or high-resolution texture packs can save more space, but changes what is installed.
- A larger NTFS SSD: The straightforward answer when compression savings are insufficient; a paid wrapper around Windows compression is not automatically better.
CompactGUI is not Microsoft software, does not repack game archives and does not remove assets. It is a convenient interface for a Windows capability that already exists.
Verdict
CompactGUI is a worthwhile, reversible experiment for suitable Windows 10/11 games on NTFS. Start with XPRESS4K or XPRESS8K, test one installation, and monitor loading, frame times and updates. Expect potentially substantial savings on some folders, little on others, and avoid DirectStorage titles on Windows 11 according to the project’s warning. The honest promise is often little noticeable impact, not guaranteed zero performance loss.
