Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand is a standalone PC game on Steam built around wave-based survival. As of October 13, 2026, it supports solo play and two-player co-op; a three-player mode is announced for the planned November 5, 2026 version 3.0 update, but that feature was not current yet. You choose one of four factions, make temporary decisions during each run, and unlock permanent faction abilities between runs.
What is Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand?
Final Stand is Relic Entertainment’s standalone wave-defense game set in the Company of Heroes 3 universe. You do not need to own Company of Heroes 3 or another earlier Company of Heroes title to buy and play it. The product is listed as a PC game on Steam, and Relic describes it as a separate product rather than a mode that requires the base game.

The name can cause confusion. Relic’s announcement uses Final Stand for this product and explicitly connects it with the studio’s earlier wave-based concepts, including Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II – Retribution’s The Last Stand. If you searched for “Company of Heroes 3 Last Stand,” you are generally looking for Final Stand, not a hidden mode inside the original Company of Heroes 3 release.

The central loop combines real-time battlefield decisions with roguelite progression. During a run, you build a battlegroup and choose from randomized units or abilities after each wave. Those choices remain active for that run. Between runs, faction-specific progression trees unlock permanent perks and unique abilities, giving later attempts a different starting toolkit.

How many players can play together?
Current support on October 13, 2026
The official product description says Final Stand is designed for single-player or two-player co-op. In practical terms, the currently advertised group sizes are:
| Mode | Players | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | 1 | Available |
| Co-op | 2 players | Available |
| Co-op | 3 players | Announced for the planned November 5, 2026 version 3.0 update |
Relic’s FAQ states: “Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand is designed for singleplayer or two-player co-op.” That wording describes the live offering as of October 13, 2026; it should not be read as confirmation that three-player co-op had already shipped.
What the announced three-player update changes
Relic’s October 8 announcement says the Company of Heroes 3 3.0 update is planned for November 5, 2026. It is intended to add three-player Final Stand and difficulty scaling. Because November 5 was still in the future on October 13, treat three-player support as forthcoming unless you verify the live update after that date. Patch timing, availability and any later changes should be checked against the current game listing and update notes.
Finding a co-op lobby
A July 30 hotfix added a Browse Games lobby list for co-op. The notes describe a browser where players can see open lobbies, including their selected maps and difficulty, then create either private or public games with preferred options. This is more specific than simply saying that online co-op exists: you can either browse an existing session or define the access and settings for your own lobby.
Which factions are playable?
Final Stand has four playable factions, and each has its own progression tree:
Rank #2
- Core gameplay players already love from Company of Heroes returns, where players win by outsmarting not out-clicking your opponents.
- Classic Mechanics have been improved with enhanced systems for cover, flanking, combined arms and richer environmental destruction mechanics.
- Innovative combat like breaching, verticality tactics, and sandbox focused missions will wow veteran Company of Heroes players.
- Dynamic Campaign Map mechanics introduce a more replayable campaign experience with long-term strategies and unprecedented choice.
- Full Tactical Pause lets players control the battlefield with time frozen for ultimate precision.
| Faction | Progression |
|---|---|
| US Forces | Faction-specific progression tree |
| Wehrmacht | Faction-specific progression tree |
| British Forces | Faction-specific progression tree |
| Deutsches Afrikakorps | Faction-specific progression tree |
The official listing establishes the four rosters and their separate trees, but it does not establish a ranked tier list or prove that one faction is objectively best. Your choice therefore affects the units, abilities and long-term unlock path available to you, not a publisher-certified “strongest faction” ranking.
Choosing a faction for a first run
Start with the faction whose battlefield identity you understand from Company of Heroes 3, if you already play that game. New players can sample each faction rather than treating an online tier list as authoritative: the available material does not provide comparative win rates, balance testing or a definitive beginner ranking. Since progression is faction-specific, experimenting also shows which unlock tree and ability style fit your preferred approach.

Temporary choices inside a run
At the beginning of a run, you construct a battlegroup. After each wave, Final Stand presents randomized units or abilities from which you choose. The selections you make persist for the duration of that run, so the battlegroup develops in response to the threats and opportunities presented by that particular attempt.
This system means a run is not simply a fixed mission with a predetermined army. The post-wave choice is a decision point: adding a unit can change how you hold territory, while an ability can alter how you handle a boss or a dynamic battlefield event. Because the offered options are randomized, two runs with the same faction can produce different combinations.
Persistent progression between runs
When a run ends, its temporary selections do not become a permanent army. Instead, progression between runs unlocks persistent perks and unique abilities through the chosen faction’s progression tree. Those unlocks expand the options available in future attempts while preserving the run-based uncertainty of the temporary choices.
Rank #3
- Take command in real-time battles and take on a campaign as a general where every decision counts
The distinction is easiest to remember this way:
- Within a run: randomized units and abilities are selected after waves and last for that run.
- Between runs: faction-specific trees provide persistent perks and unique abilities for future attempts.
The official description does not specify a universal account-wide tree, a shared pool across factions or a competitive ranking system. It does establish that the long-term trees are tied to individual factions.
What happens during a run?
Twelve escalating waves
The advertised primary structure is 12 increasingly difficult rounds. Difficulty rises as the run advances, and the listing also mentions bosses and dynamic battlefield events. The publisher’s feature counts are:
| Feature | Advertised count or option |
|---|---|
| Escalating rounds | 12 waves |
| Boss units | 36 |
| Dynamic in-game events | 18 |
| Difficulty levels | 8 |
| Battlegrounds | 5 |
These are Relic’s listed feature counts for the 2026 product, not independent measurements of encounter frequency, balance or replay value. The 36 boss units and 18 dynamic events describe the advertised content pool; they do not mean that every run contains all of them.
Endless Mode
Endless Mode is offered as an alternative to the 12-wave structure. The listing presents it as an additional challenge rather than a replacement for the escalating-round campaign. Because the available description does not define a finish line or scoring formula for Endless Mode, players should treat it as the open-ended option and consult the current in-game rules for exact victory, loss and leaderboard behavior.
Difficulty and battleground selection
Eight difficulty levels and five battlegrounds are advertised. Difficulty is a run-setting choice, while the battleground determines the map context in which waves, bosses and dynamic events occur. The July 30 co-op lobby browser displays selected maps and difficulty, allowing players to inspect those settings before joining an open session.

Do I need to own Company of Heroes 3?
No. Final Stand is marketed as standalone, and the Steam listing says ownership of earlier Company of Heroes games is not required. Someone who does not own Company of Heroes 3 can purchase Final Stand as its own PC product.
Relic’s FAQ also addresses existing owners: the base game is not required as a separate prerequisite for access, while people without it can buy the standalone product. In other words, ownership of Company of Heroes 3 and access to Final Stand are separate purchase questions rather than a technical requirement to install the base game first.
What did Final Stand cost at announcement?
Relic’s announcement FAQ gave an initial price of $29.99 USD, a 20% discount for existing Company of Heroes 3 owners, and a 10% launch-period discount. Those figures describe announcement-time pricing and promotions, not a permanent price promise. Steam prices vary by region and can change after launch or when a promotion ends, so check the current local store page before buying.

Final Stand is best understood as a focused survival product rather than a requirement or expansion that unlocks the standard Company of Heroes 3 campaign. The useful comparison points are:

Practical answers before you start
Should a solo player buy it?
Solo play is explicitly supported, so you do not need a partner to use the core mode. The run structure also suits players who enjoy adapting to randomized post-wave choices and improving a faction’s persistent tree over multiple attempts.
Is two-player co-op the current limit?
Yes, based on the official listing and FAQ available on October 13, 2026. Three-player co-op was announced for the planned November 5 update, so verify the live version if you are reading after that date.
Does a faction choice lock all future play?
The cited material says each faction has its own progression tree, but it does not say that switching factions is restricted. You should expect each faction’s unlock path to be separate; the exact rules for changing factions and carrying progression should be confirmed in the current game interface.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Are the advertised counts guarantees for every match?
No. Twelve waves, 36 boss units, 18 dynamic events, eight difficulties and five battlegrounds are publisher-listed feature counts. They describe the available structure or content pool, not a promise that each run will contain every boss or event.
What to verify if you are buying after November 5, 2026
The October 13, 2026 information predates Relic’s planned version 3.0 date. Before purchase or arranging a three-person session, verify these time-sensitive details in the current Steam listing and Relic update notes:
- Whether the three-player mode has shipped.
- How difficulty scaling behaves with three players.
- The current regional price and any active owner or launch promotions.
- Whether the Browse Games lobby interface or privacy options have changed.
The stable points are the standalone format, four named factions, the temporary-versus-persistent progression model, the 12-wave and Endless options, and the publisher’s advertised counts. Availability, pricing and online-lobby behavior can change with updates.
