Company of Heroes 3 has three distinct multiplayer choices. Final Stand (the mode sometimes referred to as “Last Stand”) is a wave-defense PvE challenge for one player or two-player co-op, with roguelite run choices and persistent faction upgrades. Standard co-op is the broader cooperative format for fighting AI or completing shared scenarios. PvP is direct competition against other people. Choose Final Stand for a focused defensive challenge, standard co-op for a conventional shared RTS battle, and PvP when you want to test your decisions against human opponents.
Final Stand, standard co-op and PvP at a glance
The names can sound interchangeable, but they describe different objectives and types of opposition. Final Stand is built around surviving attacks; standard co-op lets players coordinate armies in cooperative battles; PvP asks you to defeat another player’s army.

What Final Stand actually is
A wave-defense PvE mode
Relic describes Final Stand as an all-new standalone wave-defense experience. You establish layered defenses, survive increasingly dangerous enemy attacks and make choices between waves that shape the current run. The threat is AI-controlled, so this is PvE rather than player-versus-player combat.

- 10COMH32
A standard run contains 12 increasingly challenging rounds. An Endless Mode allows a run to continue beyond the normal structure for players who want to test how long their defenses can last. The mode is designed for repeat play rather than a single fixed campaign path.
Run-based and persistent progression
Between waves, Final Stand presents randomized units or abilities. Those selections last for the current run, so a choice can change how you handle the next attack without becoming a permanent account-wide unlock. Between runs, you can unlock persistent faction upgrades. That combination gives the mode a roguelite progression structure: each attempt has different tactical options, while longer-term upgrades give later attempts additional possibilities.
How much content is in the mode
| Content category | Confirmed amount |
|---|---|
| Standard rounds | 12 increasingly challenging rounds |
| Extended play | Endless Mode |
| Battlefields | Five battlegrounds |
| Difficulty settings | Eight levels |
| Boss units | 36 |
| Dynamic events | 18 |
| Playable factions | All four Company of Heroes factions |
The randomized choices, multiple battlegrounds, difficulty levels, bosses and events are the reason Final Stand is better understood as a repeatable challenge mode than as a short linear mission.

Is Final Stand single-player or co-op?
Both. The official FAQ states: “Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand is designed for singleplayer or two-player co-op.” The launch configuration therefore supports one person playing alone or two friends sharing the defensive battle. It is not, at launch, a large-team mode.

- Core gameplay players already love from Company of Heroes returns, where players win by outsmarting not out-clicking your opponents.
- Classic Mechanics have been improved with enhanced systems for cover, flanking, combined arms and richer environmental destruction mechanics.
- Innovative combat like breaching, verticality tactics, and sandbox focused missions will wow veteran Company of Heroes players.
- Dynamic Campaign Map mechanics introduce a more replayable campaign experience with long-term strategies and unprecedented choice.
- Full Tactical Pause lets players control the battlefield with time frozen for ultimate precision.
Finding a co-op game
Relic’s hot fix added a Browse Games lobby for Final Stand co-op. From there, players can search open lobbies, view the selected map and difficulty, create a public or private game, and customize available options. That is different from simply inviting a friend into a private session: the browse function also supports joining an open game.
- Open Final Stand from your Company of Heroes 3 installation or the standalone Final Stand product.
- Choose whether to start alone or use the Final Stand co-op lobby.
- In Browse Games, inspect open lobbies for their battleground and difficulty.
- Create a public or private lobby if you want to set the access rules yourself, then select the available options before launching.
Three-player support is announced, not yet current
Relic announced a three-player Final Stand mode for the planned 3.0 update on November 5, 2026. The announcement says it will work with all battlegrounds and scale difficulty for the larger group. Because October 18, 2026 is earlier than that release date, three-player support should be treated as upcoming content, not as a feature guaranteed to be available now. The launch version remains solo or two-player co-op.
Price, release date and ownership requirements
Final Stand launched on July 29, 2026 for PC through Steam alongside update 2.5.0. The official FAQ lists a $29.99 USD price and a 20% discount for players who already own Company of Heroes 3. Those figures describe the listed product and owner discount at the time of the FAQ; regional pricing, taxes and later promotions can differ.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsExisting Company of Heroes 3 owners do not need a separate install. Final Stand is described as a standalone product experience, but it is available through the existing game installation for owners. If you are deciding whether to buy it, the practical distinction is content: owning the base game gives you access to its standard co-op and PvP offerings, while Final Stand adds the dedicated wave-defense mode.

What standard co-op means in Company of Heroes 3
Cooperative armies against AI or shared objectives
Standard co-op is the broad, conventional cooperative option. Players coordinate armies on a shared battlefield while fighting AI opponents or working through cooperative scenarios. It does not use Final Stand’s 12-wave structure, randomized between-wave choices or persistent faction-upgrade loop.
This makes standard co-op the natural choice when the group wants a familiar Company of Heroes match: establish a front, manage resources, support a teammate and complete the objectives of the selected battle. Final Stand concentrates the experience around defense and escalating attacks; standard co-op is the better label for cooperative RTS play that is not built around that wave-defense framework.
What is and is not confirmed about team sizes
The base Steam listing confirms Online Co-op, but the official information captured for this comparison does not provide a complete current list of team sizes, maps or queue rules. Do not assume a particular 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4 cooperative format without checking the in-game options for your edition and current patch. The same caution applies to scenario availability: the existence of cooperative scenarios is established, while a complete, current catalog is not.
When standard co-op is the better choice
- Choose it when everyone wants to command a conventional army rather than select run-specific abilities between waves.
- Choose it when the group prefers AI battles or shared scenario objectives over a fixed survival ladder.
- Choose it when more than two people need to play together before the announced three-player Final Stand update is available.
What PvP changes
Human opponents instead of scripted pressure
PvP is direct online competition. Your opponent can scout, adapt and exploit mistakes rather than following a predictable wave schedule. Positioning, build choices, timing and the ability to react to an opponent’s army determine the result. There is no Final Stand-style run progression to smooth over a bad decision: the match is decided by the competing players’ execution and adaptation.
Company of Heroes 3’s Steam listing confirms Online PvP. However, the official pages captured for this article do not enumerate the complete current PvP menu, exact 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4 availability, ranked-ladder structure or map rotation. Those details can change with patches and should be verified in the current game client rather than inferred from older community guides.
What update 3.0 is expected to change
Relic’s October 2026 preview for update 3.0 mentions a multiplayer economy rework, an artillery rebalance, changes intended to discourage anti-vehicle massing and a stronger emphasis on positioning. These are announced balance and feel changes, not evidence of a particular ranking rule, matchmaking format or guaranteed queue size. The preview is useful for understanding the direction of multiplayer combat, but it should not be read as a complete PvP specification.

Start alone: Final Stand at a lower difficulty
Final Stand gives a new player a controlled way to learn movement, cover, defensive placement and faction tools while the AI supplies pressure. Starting on a lower difficulty lets you see how the wave cycle works before adding harder bosses, events and resource demands. The solo option also removes the pressure of coordinating with another person.
Start with a friend: Final Stand or standard co-op
Pick Final Stand if the pair wants a clearly defined objective—survive the next wave—and enjoys experimenting with randomized units and abilities. Pick standard co-op if the pair would rather learn the broader RTS rhythm of building an army, sharing a battlefield and responding to scenario objectives. Neither choice requires facing a human opponent while the basics are still unfamiliar.
Best Value
- Card Games for Adults: A game of terrible questions. A horrible game for terrible people. Perfect for parties, game nights, and many social gatherings.
- Maximum Replay Ability: There is a large variety of 300 cards, 225 white cards and 75 black cards. The card game is very replayable with tons of possibilities.
- Easy to Learn Rules: Game rules instruction is included. The rules are fairly simple, and it didn't take long for the group to understand the premise of the game and then to truly embrace it.
- This Card Game is for 17+ years old, great for 3 or more players. Generally the more players the better. Playtime is 30-90 mins.
- Know Your Family and Friends Better: This party game is fun, entertaining and you may discover things about your family and friends you didn't know before. It will make you and your friends and family get closer.
Move to PvP after learning the fundamentals
PvP is the right destination for a player who wants competition, but it adds scouting, adaptation and the unpredictability of another person. Learning how units respond, how to hold positions and how to recover from an attack in PvE first can make the transition less overwhelming. The game’s official material does not establish a single beginner queue or ranking path, so use the current client’s available options rather than relying on a presumed ladder structure.
A practical decision guide
| If your priority is… | Choose… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Playing alone | Final Stand | Solo play is explicitly supported, with escalating waves and repeatable runs. |
| Two-player defensive teamwork | Final Stand co-op | The launch mode is designed for two-player co-op and has public/private Browse Games options. |
| A conventional AI battle with a friend | Standard co-op | It is the broader cooperative format for AI opponents or shared scenarios. |
| Competing against people | PvP | The objective is to defeat human opponents through tactical and strategic execution. |
| Three-player Final Stand sessions | Wait for or verify update 3.0 | Three-player support was announced for November 5, 2026 and is not guaranteed on October 18. |
Common misunderstandings and pitfalls
“Last Stand” is not a separate fourth mode
Readers may call the mode “Last Stand,” but the current title used in the official material is Final Stand. Treat those as references to the same wave-defense product, not as two different multiplayer queues.
Do not confuse wave survival with standard co-op
Both can involve teammates and AI, but Final Stand’s defining systems are its rounds, bosses, dynamic events and run-based choices. Standard co-op is the general cooperative category. If you want a normal shared battlefield rather than a survival ladder, use standard co-op.
Do not treat announced content as a live feature
The planned three-player mode belongs to update 3.0’s announcement. On October 18, 2026, the confirmed Final Stand party size is solo or two players. Check the patch status after November 5 before planning a three-player session.
Do not assume unlisted PvP or co-op formats
Online Co-op and Online PvP are confirmed at the platform-listing level. Exact current team sizes, ranked rules, map rotations and queue structures are not established by the official information used here. Verify those details in the live client for the patch and region you are playing.
Bottom line
Final Stand is the focused answer for solo or two-player PvE: defend against 12 escalating rounds, use randomized run choices, unlock persistent faction upgrades and replay across five battlegrounds and eight difficulty levels. Standard co-op is the flexible option for friends who want AI battles or shared scenarios without that wave-defense progression. PvP is for direct human competition. As of October 18, 2026, Final Stand supports one or two players; the announced three-player expansion is tied to the November 5 update 3.0 release.
