The fix depends on what “crashing” means. A game that closes to the desktop usually points to game files, overlays, mods, or drivers. A black screen, blue screen, instant restart, or complete power-off points toward different problems, including GPU instability, Windows faults, overheating, unstable memory settings, power delivery, or failing hardware.
Classify the failure first, then work from the least disruptive checks toward targeted hardware testing. Do not assume that installing the newest driver—or seeing a Kernel-Power event—proves the cause.

Identify the kind of crash
| What happens | Best first suspects |
|---|---|
| Game closes to the desktop | Game files, patches, mods, overlays, drivers, or RAM |
| Game freezes but audio continues | GPU driver, game engine, VRAM, or overlay conflict |
| Screen goes black, then returns | GPU driver timeout/recovery, GPU instability, cable, or display path |
| Blue screen | Driver, RAM, Windows, or other hardware |
| Instant restart | Power delivery, overheating, unstable BIOS settings, motherboard, or GPU |
| Complete power-off | Thermal protection, PSU, power connector, or motherboard |
| Colored blocks, flickering, or other artifacts | GPU/VRAM, overheating, overclocking, or cable/display issues |
| Crash after 10–30 minutes | Heat buildup, sustained power draw, or memory instability |
| Crash immediately at launch | Driver, anti-cheat, missing runtime, corrupt files, or incompatible settings |
Windows uses Timeout Detection and Recovery (TDR) to detect when a GPU takes too long to complete work and attempt recovery. That is why a graphics-heavy game can produce a black screen or display-driver error without taking Windows down completely.

1. Record what changed
Before changing settings, write down:
- The game and launcher, and whether other demanding games fail.
- The exact symptom, stop code, error message, or whether the computer simply restarted.
- How long the game runs before failing and whether a particular scene, loading screen, resolution, or graphics feature triggers it.
- Whether the problem began after a Windows, game, GPU-driver, BIOS, or utility update.
- Whether new RAM, a GPU, storage drive, monitor, cooling component, or power supply was installed.
- Your Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM, GPU-driver version, and whether the computer is a desktop or laptop.
- On a laptop, whether it happens only on battery, only while charging, or only in a performance mode.
If failures began immediately after a driver or BIOS change, reverting that change is often more informative than installing progressively newer versions.
2. Apply the low-risk fixes first
- Restart Windows completely.
- Install pending Windows updates and update the affected game and launcher.
- Check that the computer meets the game’s system requirements.
- Temporarily disable overlays and nonessential background utilities.
- Return CPU, GPU, RAM, and motherboard tuning to stock settings.
- Reduce graphics load and cap the frame rate as a diagnostic.
These steps reflect Steam’s official launch-crash guidance, which includes updating Windows and drivers, verifying files, disabling nonessential software, and checking requirements.
Verify game files
On Steam:
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, then relaunch the game.
Epic, Xbox, EA, Ubisoft, and other launchers use equivalent Verify, Repair, or Validate commands. Verification can repair damaged files, but it cannot fix defective RAM, overheating, an unstable GPU, or a failing SSD. Remove mods and restore a clean installation when the crash occurs only with modded content.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Disable overlays and injected software
Turn these off temporarily:
- Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, and NVIDIA or AMD overlay features.
- MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner on-screen display.
- RGB, fan-control, motherboard-management, capture, recording, and performance-tuning utilities.
- Third-party antivirus game or injection features.
- Unneeded browser windows and streaming software.
Steam notes that other programs can conflict with its client. This is a diagnostic step, not a permanent recommendation: re-enable items one at a time after stability returns.
3. Remove overclocks and unstable memory profiles
Return these to default:
- GPU core and memory overclocks.
- CPU overclocks and undervolts.
- XMP or EXPO memory profiles.
- Motherboard enhanced-turbo settings and automatic overclocking.
- Custom voltage curves and GPU tuning profiles.
XMP and EXPO are performance memory profiles, not automatically defective settings. However, a system can pass light workloads and fail in a particular game. NVIDIA’s crash-dump guidance includes returning XMP or EXPO to motherboard defaults as a diagnostic step.
To reset the main BIOS settings, enter UEFI/BIOS setup, choose Optimized Defaults, Load Setup Defaults, or the equivalent, then save and restart. Record custom fan curves, boot settings, and storage-controller settings first. Test at defaults before re-enabling one setting at a time.
4. Update, clean-install, or roll back the graphics driver
“Update your drivers” is not a universal cure. The appropriate action depends on timing.

Clean installation
Use the installer’s clean-install option when the problem began after a driver change, several versions have accumulated, or the symptom includes black screens, display corruption, or driver resets. If a normal reinstall fails, an established driver-removal utility can be used as an advanced step from Safe Mode. Select the correct GPU vendor and reinstall an official driver afterward; do not use random driver-download sites.
Roll back
If the problem began after a driver update:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the GPU and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
If the button is unavailable, install an older stable version from the GPU manufacturer’s official archive and record the version. Intel’s guidance also recommends clean graphics-driver installation and collecting DxDiag when investigating game crashes.
5. Reduce the load as a diagnostic
Temporarily cap the frame rate, lower resolution, disable ray tracing, reduce texture quality, and disable frame generation or upscaling features. If supported, test DirectX 11 instead of DirectX 12, or another supported API. Borderless or windowed mode can also help isolate a display-path problem.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If reducing graphics load stops the crashes, suspect GPU temperature, VRAM use, GPU stability, power delivery, or a game-specific rendering path. It does not prove the GPU is defective. A frame-rate cap may simply provide more thermal or power headroom. A crash at the same loading screen regardless of settings points more toward files, mods, anti-cheat, driver compatibility, or a reproducible game bug.
6. Monitor temperature, clocks, and power while playing
Start monitoring before launching the game. Checking temperatures after the crash is less useful because the system may already have cooled down. Record CPU and GPU temperatures, GPU hotspot where available, fan speeds, clock speeds, power draw, throttling, and whether values rise steadily before failure.
HWiNFO can monitor the CPU, GPU, motherboard, drives, and other sensors in real time. Its free version is intended for personal, noncommercial use; download it from the official site. GPU-vendor and laptop utilities are also suitable.
Check the physical environment:
- Clean dust from filters, heatsinks, fans, and vents.
- Confirm every fan spins under load.
- Keep desktop intake and exhaust unobstructed.
- Keep laptops off beds, carpets, and other soft surfaces.
- Reseat the GPU if appropriate and confirm its power plugs are fully inserted.
- Use an open side panel only as a short diagnostic, not as a permanent cooling solution.
There is no single temperature number that proves every CPU or GPU is safe. Limits vary by chip, firmware, workload, and manufacturer. Look for abnormal trends, throttling, fan failure, severe hotspot behavior, or a crash that disappears when temperature or load is reduced. NVIDIA lists overheating, damaged game files, background software, and clock speeds among possible graphics-crash causes.
7. Inspect Windows evidence
Reliability Monitor
Search Windows for View reliability history. Check the exact time of each failure for application failures, Windows failures, hardware errors, failed updates, and driver installations. This often gives a clearer timeline than a general event log.

Event Viewer
- Press Win + X and select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application.
- Inspect entries immediately before and after the crash.
- Record the source, event ID, faulting module, and stop code.
Useful clues include:
- WHEA-Logger: possible hardware or bus-level instability; it does not identify the exact component by itself.
- Display-driver errors: GPU driver or GPU-path evidence.
- Disk or storport errors: storage, cable, controller, or drive evidence.
- BugCheck: Windows stopped because of a serious error.
- Kernel-Power 41: Windows did not shut down cleanly. It is a clue that the restart or power loss was unexpected, not proof that the PSU is bad.
Microsoft recommends Event Viewer and Windows Memory Diagnostic when investigating blue screens and unexpected restarts; see its blue-screen troubleshooting guidance.
Collect DxDiag and crash dumps
Press Win + R, type dxdiag, press Enter, then select Save All Information. Keep the report for game support or hardware diagnosis.
For repeated blue screens, small memory dumps can help identify a stop code. Kernel or full dumps are more advanced and consume disk space. Do not begin with Driver Verifier: Microsoft warns that it can make a system unusable. Experienced users should verify only targeted, suspected drivers and know how to disable it from Safe Mode.

8. Repair Windows system files
Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Use this order:
- Run DISM.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
- Run
sfc /scannow. - Restart again and retest the game.
“No integrity violations” means SFC found no repairable system-file problem; it does not clear the RAM, GPU, PSU, or other hardware. If DISM or SFC cannot complete, investigate Windows servicing or storage errors instead of repeating the commands indefinitely. Microsoft documents SFC and bug-check troubleshooting in its blue-screen reference.

Windows Memory Diagnostic
- Search for Windows Memory Diagnostic.
- Select Restart now and check for problems.
- Allow the test to finish.
- Review the result in Event Viewer under the system log for
MemoryDiagnostics-Results.
Disable XMP or EXPO before testing. A clean test is useful but does not absolutely prove the RAM is stable under every temperature and workload.
MemTest86
For repeated crashes across games or inconclusive Windows tests, use the free edition of MemTest86 from its official site. The download page currently identifies version 11.7 Build 1000 and notes that current images require UEFI; older BIOS-only systems need the older release.
Boot from its USB image and test with all modules installed. If errors appear, test one module at a time in the motherboard’s recommended slot. Any repeatable memory error is significant: stop treating the PC as stable until the module, slot, or memory settings are resolved.

GPU, CPU, and stability tests
A controlled test such as OCCT can help reproduce a fault outside a particular game, but it deliberately increases heat and power draw. Do not begin an aggressive test if the computer shows severe artifacts, a burning smell, damaged connectors, unsafe temperatures, or suspected power-supply failure. Stop immediately if any of those conditions appears. Passing one stress test does not guarantee stability in every game.
Power and physical connections
For instant restarts or power-offs, inspect:
- Whether the PSU has suitable capacity for the CPU/GPU combination.
- Whether appropriate separate PCIe power cables are used where the GPU manufacturer recommends them.
- Loose connectors, bent contacts, or signs of heat damage.
- GPU, RAM, motherboard power, and storage connections.
- The wall outlet and surge protector, if an interruption is plausible.
Do not open a PSU. A PSU is more strongly implicated when an instant restart occurs under GPU load, several games fail, connectors heat up, or reducing GPU power demand changes the behavior—but none of those observations alone proves the PSU is defective.
Storage health
If crashes occur while loading levels or compiling shaders, check whether the game drive is nearly full. Inspect Event Viewer for disk, NVMe, storport, or controller errors and use the SSD manufacturer’s utility to check drive health. Back up important data first. A corrupted game installation and a failing drive can look similar, but drive problems commonly affect more than one game or produce storage-related events.

- Search for and open System Configuration.
- Open the Services tab.
- Select Hide all Microsoft services.
- Disable the remaining nonessential services.
- Open Task Manager from the Startup area and disable nonessential startup apps.
- Restart and test the game.
- Re-enable services and apps in groups until the conflict returns.
- Return Windows to normal startup afterward.
This can expose conflicts with antivirus features, RGB utilities, capture tools, overlays, peripheral software, or motherboard management tools. Do not permanently disable security software; if it must be tested, do so briefly and only with appropriate protection.
Laptop-specific checks
Laptops add several failure paths: OEM graphics drivers, hybrid integrated/discrete graphics, insufficient or incorrect chargers, docking stations, blocked vents, and aggressive performance or fan profiles. Test with the manufacturer’s recommended charger connected, remove the dock or external display temporarily, install the laptop maker’s graphics and chipset packages, and compare balanced and performance modes.
If the crash happens only on battery or only while plugged in, that timing is important evidence. Do not assume a desktop GPU driver is interchangeable with the laptop’s OEM package.
When to stop troubleshooting
Seek the manufacturer, a reputable repair shop, or warranty service when:
- The GPU produces persistent artifacts.
- MemTest86 or another memory test reports repeatable errors.
- The system instantly powers off under load.
- There is a burning smell, damaged connector, or visible component damage.
- WHEA or hardware errors continue at BIOS defaults.
- A drive-health tool reports failure or serious warnings.
- Multiple games still crash after software isolation and driver rollback.
- You cannot safely inspect or reseat components.
Reinstalling Windows should not be the first response. Do it only after driver, memory, cooling, storage, power, and other hardware causes have been reasonably isolated; otherwise the fault may return immediately.
