If comres.dll is missing, cannot be loaded, or reports a bad image, repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The safest repair path is Windows Update, followed by DISM and System File Checker. Do not begin with a random DLL download or regsvr32.

On 32-bit Windows, there is no separate WOW64 system directory. On 64-bit Windows, the names are confusing: System32 generally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Microsoft explains this redirection in its File System Redirector documentation.
What the error message means
The wording helps identify the failure, but it does not always identify the cause.
- “comres.dll is missing” or “cannot find comres.dll” usually means Windows or an application could not find the expected component.
- “The system could not load the Comres.dll file” means the loader found a reference to the file but could not load it.
- “comres.dll is not a valid Windows image” often points to corruption, an incomplete update, or a mismatched manually copied file.
- “The application was unable to start because comres.dll was not found” indicates that a program or Windows service requested the component and the request failed.
- “Not designed to run on Windows” is generic loader wording. It can result from a damaged or incompatible file, but it does not prove that every such message is caused by
comres.dll.
If the error appears at startup, a Windows service, damaged software, or malware may be calling it. If it appears while installing or launching an application, that installer may have damaged system files or left behind a broken startup reference. Record the complete message and any path shown before closing it.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed or incomplete update can leave a protected system component unavailable.
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not explicitly require a restart.
- Test the program or action that produced the error.
If Windows Update fails, restart once and check again. Do not copy comres.dll from another PC to work around an update problem.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair procedure for a missing or damaged comres.dll. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC then uses that repaired source to restore protected system files.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
TerminalorCommand Prompt. - Right-click the result.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent. Then restart the computer and test again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC and documents both commands in its System File Checker guidance.
Understand the result
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC did not find protected-file corruption. If the error remains, identify the program or service making the request.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means the repair worked at the file level. Restart and test.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means more repair is required. Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC a second time.
- DISM cannot obtain the source files means Windows could not retrieve matching repair content. Install pending updates, check the Windows Update service, and use a matching repair source with
/Sourceand/LimitAccessif you have appropriate Windows installation media.
The SFC details are recorded in:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Repeated DISM failures, recurring SFC corruption, or changing repair results can indicate component-store damage or a storage problem rather than a single missing DLL.
When manually hunting through Windows repairs, it is easy to repeat the same commands without knowing what changed. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows detected problems, while repairs are completed by the full version; it is optional, and DISM, SFC, or reinstalling Windows remains the appropriate definitive path for a damaged system component.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a genuine system file after a mistaken detection, and malware cleanup can also remove or alter files.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections for
comres.dll, system files, or suspicious software. - Open a detection to see its path, threat name, and action.
Do not immediately choose Restore. First confirm that:
- The file path is a normal Windows system path.
- The detection is identified as a false positive.
- The file belongs to Microsoft Windows.
- A current security scan does not find active malware.
Microsoft warns that restoring an actual threat can put the device at risk. Its Protection History guidance explains how quarantine and restoration work.
If malware is suspected, disconnect the computer from untrusted networks, update security definitions, run a full scan, and repair Windows after the threat has been removed. A clean reinstall may be safer when malware has altered system files extensively.

Fix 4: Determine whether the path belongs to Windows
A normal comres.dll reference should point into the Windows directory. To inspect the path:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Copy the complete path from the error message.
- Check whether it is under
%windir%System32or the appropriate redirected system location. - Right-click the file if it exists.
- Select Properties → Digital Signatures.
- Inspect the signer and signature status.
A copy in a program’s own folder, a temporary directory, a download folder, or an unfamiliar location deserves extra caution. It may be an application-local replacement, a damaged installer file, or malware. Do not replace it merely because the filename matches.
If the file exists but Windows reports a bad image, presence alone proves nothing. Repair it through DISM and SFC rather than trusting a copied file.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the error began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, software installation, or security change, System Restore may undo the triggering change without replacing individual DLLs.
From Windows:
- Press Win+R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Review affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
If Windows cannot start normally, open Windows Recovery Environment and choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → System Restore.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, and updates installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.
Fix 6: Repair or reinstall the parent application
comres.dll is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or ordinary game middleware file. Reinstalling those packages is not justified just because the filename ends in .dll.
If the error appears only when launching one program:
- Note the exact executable named in the error.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Try Repair, then Reset only if appropriate for that program.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall it.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it using the developer’s official installer.
- Test the program before adding optional plugins or modifications.
The application may have left a broken startup entry even after its main files were removed. If the error appears only at logon, inspect Task Manager → Startup apps and Event Viewer for the calling program or service. Repair or remove that parent software after Windows itself has been checked.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when evidence points to one
A driver is not a normal cause of a missing comres.dll, so do not reinstall drivers at random. Use Device Manager only when the error started with a specific hardware or driver installation.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category connected to the failure.
- Right-click the suspected device.
- Select Properties → Driver.
- Review the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver, Roll Back Driver, or uninstall and reinstall the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official source when the event clearly identifies it.
If the problem followed a driver update, Roll Back Driver may be more appropriate than installing a newer package.
Manually checking dozens of driver versions is tedious, and the free scan from Outbyte Driver Updater shows which drivers it identifies as outdated; driver installation is completed by the full version, and it is not required when Windows logs point to a damaged system component instead.

What not to do
Do not download a standalone comres.dll
Random DLL download pages can provide malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong language, or the wrong architecture. A replacement may also hide the real cause, such as a damaged component store or infected system.
Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, and official Windows installation media are the safe sources.
Do not run regsvr32 comres.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A Windows resource component is not routinely repaired by registering it, and the command may produce another error without fixing the original problem. Microsoft documents the command’s behavior in its regsvr32 documentation.
Do not copy between System32 and SysWOW64
Do not put a 32-bit file in System32 or a 64-bit file in SysWOW64. Do not copy a file from another Windows release, language, service pack, or computer unless you are performing advanced recovery with a verified identical build. DISM and SFC are safer.
FAQ
Is comres.dll safe?
The genuine Windows component is a Microsoft COM+ resource DLL. Verify its location and digital signature. A file with the same name in an unrelated folder may not be genuine.

Does Windows 10 include it?
Windows system components and their exact file details vary by Windows build and architecture. Repair the installed Windows copy rather than using a universal version table.
Should I enable a Windows Feature?
Not for a generic comres.dll error. Enabling unrelated Windows Features does not replace a damaged COM+ resource component. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC first.
What if SFC cannot repair comres.dll?
Run DISM again, restart, rerun SFC, and inspect %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. If the issue remains, use System Restore or an in-place Windows repair. Also check disk health and investigate malware.
