If a Conan Exiles dedicated server cannot be joined, times out, or never appears in the browser, check the ports by role: UDP 7777 carries game traffic, UDP 7778 handles browser pings, and UDP 27015 handles server queries. Direct Connect uses your public address with the game port, normally public-address:7777; it does not use query port 27015. Forward those UDP ports to the server computer’s current LAN address, allow the matching traffic through the host firewall, and keep the game, router, and firewall settings synchronized.

Funcom’s dedicated-server documentation separates gameplay, browser discovery, queries, remote administration, and mod transfers. A port can be open while a different service remains unreachable, so test and configure each role independently.

The default game, pinger, and query values are three different services. Opening only 27015 will not make gameplay work, and opening only 7777 may allow direct joining while leaving the server absent from browser results.
What each port does—and what a failure means
UDP 7777: the actual game connection
Players send gameplay traffic to the configured game port, which is 7777 by default. A timeout on Direct Connect usually points to forwarding, firewall, an incorrect public address, a stale destination IP, or a port collision. The server process must also be listening on that port; a router rule cannot repair a server that never bound the port.

UDP 7778: browser pinger
The browser pinger is always one number higher than the game port. With the default game port of 7777, the pinger is 7778. If you move the game port to 7779, the pinger becomes 7780. It is not an independently chosen value, so forwarding an arbitrary second port can break browser visibility.
UDP 27015: server query and discovery
Query traffic supplies server information used for discovery. It is not the port used for Direct Connect gameplay. A server may answer queries yet reject a game connection if UDP 7777 is blocked; the reverse can also happen, producing a joinable server that does not appear correctly in the browser.
TCP 25575: RCON
RCON is a separate TCP administration service. It is not required for ordinary player connections. Expose it only when remote administration is enabled, and use the port configured under [RconPlugin] in Game.ini.
TCP mod-transfer traffic
Applicable PC clients can retrieve mods through an on-demand TCP transfer port based on the game port and the configured ModFileDownload.DownloadPortOffset. Treat this as a separate service: enabling UDP gameplay ports does not automatically enable TCP mod downloads.
Funcom states that, by default, the server listens on UDP ports 27015 and 7777.

Fix Conan Exiles ports in the right order
Work from the server outward. This prevents changing router rules for a port that the process is not using and makes each test meaningful.

- Start the dedicated server and wait until its normal startup sequence completes.
- Inspect the server log or operating-system process and socket view for listeners on the configured game and query ports.
- Record the machine’s current private address, such as the LAN address assigned by DHCP. Do not assume it is unchanged from an earlier setup.
If no listener exists, solve the server configuration or startup error before testing the router. A port-forwarding entry can point to a live computer and still fail when the application is stopped, crashed, or bound to another port.
2. Verify the game and query values in Engine.ini
- Open
Engine.iniused by the dedicated server. - Under
[URL], verifyPort=7777, or the alternate game port you intentionally selected. - Under
[OnlineSubsystemNull], verifyGameServerQueryPort=27015, or your selected query port. - Save the file and restart the server so the process reloads the values.
The pinger remains the game port plus one. For example, a game port of 7779 implies a pinger port of 7780; it is not set by copying the query value.
3. Reserve the server computer’s LAN address
Create a DHCP reservation in the router for the server host, or configure a stable address using your network’s supported method. Then compare the reserved address with the address shown by the server operating system. A stale DHCP lease is a common configuration failure: the router may forward correctly to yesterday’s address while the server is using a different one today.
4. Forward the required UDP ports to that exact address
In the router’s port-forwarding or virtual-server page, create rules that send UDP game, pinger, and query traffic to the reserved server address:

- UDP 7777 to the server for default gameplay.
- UDP 7778 to the same server for the default browser pinger.
- UDP 27015 to the same server for the default query service.
Use the alternate numbers only when the server configuration has been changed. Keep the external and internal port values aligned unless your router explicitly supports and you intentionally use a translation. Forwarding TCP instead of UDP, or sending a rule to another machine, will not satisfy the documented service.
5. Add host-firewall rules that match the service
The operating-system firewall is independent of the router. Allow inbound traffic on the server host for the configured ports and protocols. Funcom’s Linux example allows UDP 7777, UDP 7778, and UDP 27015; TCP 7777 and TCP 25575 are separate rules for the documented TCP services. On another operating system, create equivalent inbound rules using that platform’s firewall interface.
- Allow UDP for game, pinger, and query ports.
- Allow TCP 25575 only if RCON is enabled and needed remotely.
- Allow the TCP mod-transfer port when your configuration uses on-demand mod delivery.
- Do not assume an allow rule for UDP also allows TCP; protocols are filtered separately.
After changing firewall rules, restart the server or its networking component if the operating system requires it, then retest from outside the LAN.
6. Test from a genuinely external network
Use a device on a different internet connection, such as a phone hotspot or another location. Testing from inside the same LAN can fail when the router lacks NAT loopback, also called hairpin NAT. That result does not prove the WAN forwarding is broken. An external test should target the router’s public address and the configured game port.

Also check that the address shown as the router’s WAN address is actually public and assigned to that router. If it differs from the public address observed from the internet, an upstream gateway or carrier-grade NAT may be in the path, and a port rule on your local router alone cannot receive unsolicited traffic.

7. Use Direct Connect with the game port
Enter the public address followed by the game port, normally public-address:7777. Do not substitute 27015: that is the query port, not the gameplay endpoint. If you selected another game port, use that number instead, while still keeping the pinger one number higher.
8. Check browser visibility separately
If Direct Connect works but the server is missing or incomplete in the browser, investigate UDP 7778 and UDP 27015, the host firewall, and the server’s query response. Funcom notes that a firewall exception may be needed for a server to appear in the Steam server browser. Browser listings can therefore fail even when the game port itself is reachable.

Running more than one server or a local Conan client
Port collisions occur when another Conan Exiles server or a local client already occupies a default port. The fix is a coordinated set, not a single replacement number. Funcom documents an example alternate set of game 7779, pinger 7780, and query 27016.
- Choose the alternate game port, such as 7779.
- Derive the pinger as game port plus one, giving 7780.
- Choose a distinct query port, such as 27016.
- Change
Port=andGameServerQueryPort=inEngine.ini. - Update router forwarding to the same host and numbers.
- Update inbound firewall rules with the same protocols.
- Restart the affected server and verify that each process listens on its own set.
Do not assign the same UDP game or query port to two servers on one public address. If they run on different private hosts, each needs a unique external port or a router design that translates external ports to distinct internal endpoints.

Test the game, pinger, and query values rather than only the default numbers when you have changed them. Interpret a failed test alongside the listener, router, and firewall checks: a test cannot succeed if the server is stopped, the destination address is stale, or the WAN address is not truly reachable from the internet.

Common mistakes and their corrections
Forwarding 27015 for Direct Connect
27015 is the query port. Replace the Direct Connect target with the public address and the game port, normally 7777.

Opening only one protocol
UDP and TCP rules are not interchangeable. Gameplay, pinger, and query traffic use UDP; RCON uses TCP; mod transfer uses TCP on its configured endpoint.
Forwarding to the wrong private address
Check the server host’s current lease and reserve it. A correct rule aimed at an old address is functionally a broken rule.
Changing the game port but not the pinger
The pinger follows the game port plus one. Moving gameplay to 7779 while leaving assumptions at 7778 creates a mismatch; use 7780 and update the corresponding rules.
Testing only from inside the home network
Use an external connection because NAT loopback support varies by router. An internal failure is not conclusive evidence of WAN failure.
Assuming browser absence proves the server is offline
Browser discovery depends on pinger, query, and firewall behavior. Test Direct Connect separately to distinguish discovery problems from gameplay reachability.
Leaving RCON exposed unnecessarily
RCON is optional administration traffic. If you do not use it remotely, do not create an internet-facing TCP rule merely because 25575 is listed in a port table.
A complete verification checklist
- The dedicated-server process is running and logs show listeners on the configured ports.
Engine.inicontains the intended gamePort=and queryGameServerQueryPort=.- The pinger is exactly one higher than the game port.
- The router forwards UDP game, pinger, and query ports to the server’s current reserved LAN address.
- The host firewall allows the same ports with the correct UDP or TCP protocol.
- Direct Connect uses the public address plus the game port, not the query port.
- Testing is performed from outside the LAN.
- The router’s WAN address is genuinely public and matches the address players are using.
- No other server or local client is occupying the selected ports.
- RCON and mod-transfer rules are present only when those services are enabled.
- After any port change, the server, router, and firewall were all updated together and the server was restarted.
Bottom line
Start with the listener and configuration, then align the LAN reservation, UDP forwarding, host firewall, and external test. Use UDP 7777 for gameplay, UDP 7778 for its browser pinger, and UDP 27015 for queries by default; use the public address with 7777 for Direct Connect. Treat TCP 25575 and mod-transfer TCP traffic as separate optional services. When every layer points to the same host and port set, most timeout and missing-browser failures become identifiable rather than guesswork.
