The moment that creature starts casting a second spell that requires concentration, concentration on the first spell ends. The 2024 rules extend the same trigger to activating another concentration effect.
That limit is separate from the question of whether spell effects combine. Two different spells can have overlapping effects, and two different creatures can each maintain concentration on their own spells. Repeated castings of the same spell are a separate rules case, with the 2014 rules expressly preventing their effects from combining.

The rule in one sentence
One creature can maintain only one concentration spell or concentration effect at a time. Starting a second concentration spell ends the first immediately; it does not wait for the second spell to finish casting or take effect.

This is a limit on the caster’s concentration, not a universal ban on having multiple magical effects on one target. Other creatures may be concentrating on their own spells, and non-concentration spells can remain active while a character concentrates.
2014 and 2024 rules compared
| Question | 2014 Basic Rules | 2024 Basic Rules |
|---|---|---|
| How many concentration spells can one creature maintain? | One; the spellcasting rules explicitly say a caster cannot concentrate on two spells at once. | One concentration spell or other concentration effect. |
| What ends concentration when another effect is used? | Starting to cast another spell that requires concentration. | Starting to cast another spell that requires Concentration, or activating another effect that requires Concentration. |
| When does the first effect end? | Immediately when casting the second concentration spell starts. | When the second concentration spell is started, or the other concentration effect is activated. |
| What happens after damage? | Make a Constitution saving throw against DC 10 or half the damage taken, whichever is higher. | Make a Constitution saving throw against DC 10 or half the damage taken, rounded down, whichever is higher, with a maximum DC of 30. |
| Other automatic endings | Incapacitation or death ends concentration. | Incapacitation or death ends concentration. |
| Same-spell overlap wording | The rules expressly say repeated castings of the same spell do not combine. | The concentration limit is established in the glossary, but the supplied 2024 rules text does not provide a matching passage for every same-spell-overlap example. |
The edition matters whenever you are resolving details beyond the one-concentration limit. Use the rules for the edition being played rather than importing a 2014 example into a 2024 ruling without checking the current text.
Exactly when does the first spell end?
The timing is easy to miss during a fast combat round. The first spell ends at the start of casting the new concentration spell, not when the new spell resolves.
- Identify the first concentration effect. The character is currently maintaining a spell such as bless.
- Begin casting the second spell. The second spell has a Concentration requirement.
- End the first concentration immediately. The first spell’s duration stops at this point.
- Resolve the new spell normally. If the new spell succeeds, the caster now concentrates on it. If it fails, is countered, or otherwise produces no lasting effect, the first spell is not restored.
The official Sage Advice Compendium states: “If you’re concentrating on a spell, your concentration on it ends immediately when you start casting another spell that requires concentration.” The wording rules out a temporary overlap during the casting time.
The same timing applies regardless of whether the second spell uses an action, bonus action, reaction, or another casting time. What matters is that the spell requires concentration and that casting it has begun.

What can break concentration?
Starting another concentration spell
This is the intentional replacement case. A creature does not choose which of two concentration spells to keep after both are active; the first ends when the second starts.
Taking damage
Damage can force a Constitution saving throw to maintain concentration. Under the 2014 rules, the DC is 10 or half the damage taken, whichever is higher. Each separate source of damage can require a separate save, so several hits may create several concentration checks rather than one check for the whole turn.
The 2024 glossary changes the written calculation: use DC 10 or half the damage taken, rounded down, whichever is higher, capped at DC 30. Apply the formula to the damage event that triggers the save and use the rules for the edition at your table.
Incapacitation
Becoming incapacitated ends concentration. This is an automatic ending condition, not a Constitution save that can be passed.
Death
Death ends concentration as well. Any spell depending on that creature’s concentration stops when the creature dies.

Ordinary activity under the 2014 rules
The 2014 rules do not end concentration merely because the caster moves or attacks. Casting a spell that does not require concentration also does not, by itself, break concentration. A character can therefore maintain a concentration spell while taking normal combat actions, provided none of the actual ending conditions occurs.
Concentration is not the same as spell-effect stacking
“Only one concentration spell” answers how many concentration effects one creature can maintain. It does not answer whether several spell effects can be present at the same time.
Different spells
The 2014 Basic Rules say that the effects of different spells add together while their durations overlap. Thus, if separate spells provide different benefits, both effects can apply unless a specific spell, condition, or other rule says otherwise. The concentration limit still applies separately to each caster: one character cannot maintain both spells, but two characters may each maintain one.
The same spell cast more than once
The 2014 rules treat repeated castings of the same spell differently. Multiple castings do not combine their effects. If the overlapping effects are not equally potent, the most potent effect applies. If they are equally potent and their durations overlap, the most recent effect applies.
The rules give two clerics casting bless as the example: a target receives the benefit once, not two sets of bonus dice. The example concerns overlapping effects, not a single cleric maintaining two concentration spells.

2024 edition qualification
The 2024 material establishes the one-concentration limit and the activation trigger, but the rules supplied here do not include a directly corresponding 2024 passage for every same-spell-overlap situation. When a 2024 encounter involves duplicate spell effects, consult the applicable current spell and effect rules rather than assuming that every 2014 example has identical wording.
Can two casters combine concentration?
Yes, in the limited sense that each caster can maintain a separate concentration effect. The rule restricts each creator’s concentration; it does not require a whole party to share one concentration slot.
For example, one wizard can concentrate on one spell while a cleric concentrates on another. Both effects can be present if the spells’ individual rules allow the target to receive them and the applicable overlapping-effects rules do not prevent it.
What two casters cannot do is let one caster maintain two concentration spells by treating the second caster as an extra concentration slot. Each spell remains tied to the creature concentrating on it. If that creator loses concentration, that creator’s spell ends.

|---|---|---|
| A character concentrates on one spell, then starts a second concentration spell. | The first spell ends immediately. | Starting the second concentration spell ends the first. |
| The second spell is countered after casting begins. | The first spell remains ended. | The trigger occurs when casting starts, before the second spell’s final result. |
| A concentrating character casts a spell that does not require concentration. | Concentration continues under the 2014 rules. | Only a new concentration spell, damage, incapacitation, or death breaks it under the listed rules. |
| A concentrating character moves or makes an attack. | Concentration continues under the 2014 rules. | Those ordinary activities do not themselves end concentration. |
| A concentrating character takes one damaging hit. | Make the edition-appropriate Constitution save. | Damage can force a concentration check. |
| A concentrating character takes damage from several separate sources. | Resolve the applicable save for each triggering damage source. | The 2014 rules treat separate damage sources as separate prompts for saves. |
| Two different casters maintain different spells affecting one target. | Both may remain active, subject to the spells’ own rules. | The one-effect limit applies per creator. |
| Two casters cast the same spell on one target under the 2014 rules. | The effects do not combine; use the most potent or most recent equal effect. | The same-spell overlap rule is distinct from concentration. |
A practical table ruling procedure
- Check the spell entry. Confirm whether the spell actually requires concentration. A spell with a duration is not automatically a concentration spell.
- Check who is concentrating. The relevant limit belongs to the creature creating the effect, not necessarily the creature being targeted.
- Look for an existing concentration effect. If the same creature already concentrates, mark that effect as ending before resolving the new one.
- Apply the timing rule. End the old effect when casting the new concentration spell starts. In 2024, use the same step when activating another effect that requires Concentration.
- Resolve interruptions separately. If damage occurs, calculate the Constitution save using the edition’s formula. If the creator becomes incapacitated or dies, end concentration automatically.
- Only then assess overlap. If multiple effects remain because different creatures created them, determine whether they are different spells or repeated castings of the same spell and apply the relevant edition’s overlapping-effects rule.
Misconceptions to avoid
“The first spell lasts until the second spell succeeds.”
It does not. The first spell ends when casting the second concentration spell begins. A failed or interrupted second spell does not bring the first one back.

“Any second spell breaks concentration.”
Only a spell that requires concentration triggers this replacement rule. Under the 2014 rules, non-concentration spells can be cast while concentrating.
“Concentration prevents every other effect on the target.”
No. It limits how many concentration effects one creator can maintain. Non-concentration spells and effects from other creatures still require their own rules analysis.
“Two copies of the same spell automatically give double benefits.”
Under the 2014 overlapping-effects rule, repeated castings of the same spell do not combine. Use the most potent effect, or the most recent one when equally potent effects overlap.
Recommended Free Tools
“A second caster lets the first caster concentrate twice.”
No. The second caster supplies a separate concentration source. The first caster still has only one concentration effect at a time.
Quick Recap
What to remember at the table
- One creature maintains at most one concentration spell or concentration effect.
- Starting another concentration spell ends the old one immediately.
- In 2024, activating another effect that requires Concentration also ends the current concentration.
- Damage may require a Constitution saving throw; use the 2014 or 2024 damage formula for the edition being played.
- Incapacitation and death end concentration automatically.
- Moving, attacking, and casting a non-concentration spell do not by themselves break concentration under the 2014 rules.
- Different casters may maintain different concentration spells at the same time.
- Whether effects combine is a separate question from whether one creature can concentrate on two spells.
