In September 2024, Colin Moriarty reported that an unnamed person who worked on Concord described a development culture where negative feedback about the game, its characters, or its gameplay was unwelcome. Kotaku senior writer Ethan Gach said he could corroborate the “toxic positivity” portion. The account remains a reported allegation: the coverage reviewed did not identify the original source or provide internal documents establishing the claim.
What the allegation says
On September 20, 2024, Colin Moriarty said on his Sacred Symbols podcast and in a public post that he had spoken extensively with someone who worked on Concord. Insider Gaming reported Moriarty’s account and noted that he did not say whether the person was a developer. According to the account, criticism of the game, its characters, and its gameplay was discouraged. Insider Gaming said the claim rested on one source and that it had sought comment from PlayStation and Firewalk. Insider Gaming’s report.

The phrase “toxic positivity” is a description attributed to that source, not a formal finding or an official characterization by Firewalk or PlayStation. Another line associated with the reporting—“You weren’t allowed to say anything internally about this game”—should likewise be understood as attributed wording, not proof that every employee shared the same experience.
What Ethan Gach corroborated—and what he did not
Kotaku senior writer Ethan Gach publicly wrote, “I can corroborate the part about toxic positivity.” He also said sources he had spoken with described a “head in the sand mentality” and a sense that the team was too good to fail. Push Square’s account of Gach’s comments and Hitmarker’s coverage.

That statement adds a second journalist’s reporting to the cultural allegation, but it does not make the underlying witnesses identifiable in the cited material. It is partial corroboration of the theme, not a published, documented finding about the studio’s internal practices or every team member’s experience.
How firmly is the claim established?
The available coverage supports describing this as an allegation reported by journalists, with Gach publicly corroborating its general theme. It does not supply named employee testimony, internal messages, meeting records, or other primary evidence that would independently establish how feedback was handled across the team. The source’s precise role and the breadth of the alleged experience also remain unclear in the cited accounts.

That distinction matters: reports about a workplace culture can be important without being conclusive. Readers should not turn an unnamed source’s account, or a journalist’s brief corroboration, into a definitive explanation for the game’s outcome.
Keep the separate budget claim out of the culture story
Moriarty’s account also included a reported development-cost figure of $400 million, but that is a separate and disputed claim. Insider Gaming described it as coming from one source; Push Square noted Moriarty was surprised by the number; and Hitmarker reported that Gach and other developers disputed it and suggested it might include costs after Sony acquired Firewalk. None of that confirms a budget, and the figure does not strengthen the evidence for the alleged culture. See Insider Gaming, Push Square, and Hitmarker.

What readers can reasonably take away
- The cultural claim originated in Moriarty’s account of a conversation with an unnamed person who worked on Concord.
- Gach said he could corroborate the “toxic positivity” portion and relayed similar descriptions from sources he had spoken with.
- The cited material does not identify those witnesses or provide primary records, so the allegation should remain attributed rather than stated as proven fact.
- The $400 million figure is a separate, disputed estimate and should not be treated as an established budget or evidence of workplace culture.
Concord was taken offline after launch, so a copy of the game is not a way to revisit it as a playable service. That is separate from the question of whether the reported development-culture account is fully established.
