Short answer: Standard Bluetooth headphones and earbuds do not pair directly with a PS5 for audio. Use a PlayStation-compatible USB or PlayStation Link headset, a Bluetooth audio transmitter, your TV’s Bluetooth audio output, or a cable to the DualSense controller. The right choice depends mainly on whether you need party chat, low-latency audio, or simply want to use headphones you already own.
Can Bluetooth headphones connect directly to a PS5?
No—not as ordinary Bluetooth audio accessories. Sony says third-party wireless headsets that use Bluetooth are not supported on PS5, although USB and analog headsets are generally supported. That includes common Bluetooth-only headphones and earbuds such as AirPods, Galaxy Buds, Bose models, and Sony WH-series headphones. Sony’s guidance is in its PS5 FAQ.
The PS5’s Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories menu is not a standard Bluetooth-headphone pairing route. A device may appear during an attempt, but that does not mean the console supports it for audio. Repeating the pairing or resetting the headphones will not remove this compatibility limit.

Connect a PlayStation-compatible wireless headset
Compatible wireless headsets use their supported USB adapter or PlayStation Link connection rather than ordinary Bluetooth pairing. For Sony’s PULSE Elite, the included PlayStation Link USB adapter is paired with the headset out of the box. Sony’s accessory support page documents the connection process.

- Turn on the PS5.
- Insert the headset’s USB adapter into a PS5 USB port. For PULSE Elite, use a USB Type-A port for the included PlayStation Link adapter.
- Turn on the headset. For PULSE Elite, press its PlayStation Link button.
- Wait for the headset and adapter indicators to show a connection, then follow any on-screen instructions.
- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and confirm the headset is selected as the output device.
- To check the microphone, press the PS button, open the control center, select Mic, and choose or test the input device.
PULSE Elite and PULSE Explore use PlayStation Link for their PS5 connection; Bluetooth support on these products is for compatible mobile devices and should not be mistaken for direct Bluetooth audio pairing with the console. See Sony’s PlayStation accessory guidance and the PULSE Explore product page. Sony’s standalone PlayStation Link USB adapter is intended for compatible PlayStation Link products, not as a universal Bluetooth transmitter for AirPods or other standard Bluetooth headphones.
Use a USB Bluetooth transmitter with headphones you own
A transmitter is a workaround: it takes audio from the PS5 and sends it over Bluetooth. It does not make the PS5 natively support ordinary Bluetooth headphones. Buy a device that explicitly transmits audio from PS5 or gaming consoles; a Bluetooth receiver, keyboard adapter, or generic data dongle does a different job. Avantree, for example, markets PS5-oriented products in its USB Bluetooth audio adapter range and its ProLink product page. Those examples are not a guarantee that every transmitter works with every headset.
- Check how the transmitter takes audio from the console: USB, USB-C, optical, or 3.5 mm, as specified for that model. Some devices need a separate audio cable even when USB supplies power.
- Connect the transmitter to the PS5 and put it into pairing mode.
- Put your headphones or earbuds into Bluetooth pairing mode and wait for the devices to connect.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output. If the transmitter appears as a USB audio device, select it.
- Test game audio before joining a party. Check the transmitter’s instructions if it does not appear or requires a separate power or audio connection.
Some transmitters provide one-way audio only, so sound reaches the headphones but the microphone cannot send voice back to the PS5. Others may support a mic through a separate 3.5 mm connection. Check microphone support specifically rather than assuming it follows from headphone audio working. Low-latency modes require compatible codec support at both ends, and delay still varies with the transmitter, headphones, firmware, and codec negotiation. Placement can also matter: USB transmitters may experience interference or dropouts near other 2.4 GHz devices.

Pair headphones with a TV or monitor instead
In this setup, the display—not the PS5—is the Bluetooth host. It is useful for single-player gaming or media when the TV supports Bluetooth audio output, but it usually does not route the headphones’ microphone back to the PS5 for party chat.

- Connect the PS5 to the TV or monitor over HDMI as usual.
- Open the display’s Bluetooth or audio-output settings.
- Put the headphones into pairing mode and select them on the display.
- Set the display’s active audio output to the Bluetooth headphones. If sound still plays from the speakers, choose Bluetooth output or disable the speakers using the TV’s controls.
The headphones may not appear in the PS5’s device list because the TV handles the wireless link. Some displays support Bluetooth connections for accessories but not Bluetooth audio output, so confirm the display’s capabilities. Audio delay and volume controls vary by TV and headphones; TV Bluetooth is not the best choice when competitive timing or PS5 voice chat is essential.
Connect headphones to the DualSense controller with a cable
If your headphones support wired audio, a cable to the controller is the simplest alternative to Bluetooth pairing and avoids wireless audio latency from a transmitter or TV.

A four-pole TRRS cable is preferable if you need microphone support, but the headphones must expose their microphone in wired mode. Some Bluetooth headphones disable their mic when used passively over a cable; active noise cancellation may also require battery power. If the wired microphone is unavailable, use the DualSense’s built-in microphone or another compatible PS5 input. Sony says headsets connected through the controller’s 3.5 mm jack can work with PS5 3D Audio; availability also depends on the game and connected audio setup, as described in Sony’s PS5 FAQ.
Will AirPods, Galaxy Buds, Bose, or Sony WH headphones work?
These products do not connect directly to PS5 as standard Bluetooth audio headsets. They may work for listening through a compatible Bluetooth transmitter or a TV that supports Bluetooth audio output, but that is a connection to the intermediary, not direct PS5 pairing. Party-chat microphone support depends on the transmitter, headphones, and signal path; do not assume it will work. For AirPods in particular, Apple’s pairing behavior does not change Sony’s PS5 compatibility policy.

- Check physical mute controls and confirm the headphones, transmitter, and PS5 are not muted.
Troubleshoot common connection problems
“Bluetooth audio is not supported”
This is expected when trying to pair ordinary Bluetooth headphones directly with the console. Choose a transmitter, TV audio output, wired controller connection, or compatible PlayStation wireless headset instead.
The transmitter is connected, but there is no sound
- Confirm it is a Bluetooth audio transmitter, not a receiver.
- Check whether it appears under Settings > Sound > Audio Output, then select it if available.
- Check whether the model needs a separate 3.5 mm or optical audio cable in addition to USB power.
- Make sure the headphones are not still connected to a phone or another device, and that both devices completed pairing.
- Check volume and mute controls on the PS5, transmitter, and headphones.
Audio plays, but the microphone or party chat does not
Many transmitters support only one-way audio. Others require a separate microphone connection, and some headphones do not expose their mic over Bluetooth or wired mode. Confirm the PS5’s selected input in the control center’s Mic panel. TV-connected headphones usually do not return their mic audio to the console.
Audio is delayed or drops out
Delay varies by connection path and equipment; a low-latency codec can help only if both transmitter and headphones support it. Try a wired DualSense connection or a dedicated gaming headset if the delay interferes with play. For dropouts, check the transmitter’s placement, move it away from nearby wireless devices, and consult its instructions about USB ports or cables.

A PlayStation Link headset will not connect
Use the PlayStation Link adapter rather than the PS5’s ordinary Bluetooth-accessory menu. Confirm the adapter is connected, power-cycle the headset, and try another USB port. If the headset has been paired with another PlayStation Link adapter, follow Sony’s pairing and adapter-switching guidance. Sony also provides PlayStation Link PC driver and update information for compatible devices.
Which method is best for your use?
- Competitive gaming or reliable party chat: Choose a PS Link or PS5-compatible USB wireless headset with a microphone. These avoid relying on a generic Bluetooth transmitter’s chat features.
- Existing Bluetooth headphones, mainly for listening: Try a PS5-specific USB audio transmitter, but verify its audio input, headphone compatibility, and microphone support before buying.
- No extra purchase: Use a 3.5 mm cable to the DualSense if your headphones support wired audio.
- Casual single-player gaming or media: TV Bluetooth can be convenient if the display supports audio output over Bluetooth and latency is acceptable.
- Sony’s official wireless option: PULSE Elite is an over-ear headset using PlayStation Link; PULSE Explore is the official earbuds option. The PULSE Elite product page advertises up to 30 hours of battery life and up to two hours of play after a 10-minute charge. Those are Sony product claims, not a guarantee of runtime under every use condition.
For 3D Audio, configure the available options in PS5 sound settings and check whether the game and connected device support the feature. Sony notes the game-dependent nature of supported 3D Audio features on its PULSE 3D headset page; do not assume every connection method behaves identically.
