Yes, you can use a PS4 DualShock 4 controller with Fortnite on a Windows PC. The most reliable setup is a data-capable Micro USB cable: connect the controller, press PS, launch Fortnite, open Settings → Controller Mapping, choose a preset, and select Apply. Bluetooth is a wireless alternative, while DS4Windows is a fallback when Fortnite does not detect the controller.
The key distinction is between connection and recognition. Windows may pair or power the controller without Fortnite accepting its input, so test the controller in Windows, configure it in Fortnite, and verify stable controls before entering a competitive match.

Key takeaways
- A DualShock 4 works with Fortnite on a Windows PC, and a data-capable Micro USB cable is the simplest connection method.
- Bluetooth pairing uses SHARE + PS until the light bar flashes, then Windows should list the controller as “Wireless Controller.”
- If Windows detects the controller but Fortnite does not, restart the game with the controller already connected, close conflicting input tools, and try USB before installing DS4Windows.
- DS4Windows can emulate an Xbox/XInput controller, but it adds a driver layer and may change Fortnite’s button prompts from PlayStation to Xbox icons.
- Epic permits ordinary external controllers, but macros, automated input, rapid-fire tools, and other competitive-advantage devices are a separate risk.
What do you need to connect a PS4 controller to PC for Fortnite?
To connect a PS4 controller to PC for Fortnite, you need a compatible DualShock 4, a Windows PC with Fortnite installed through the Epic Games Launcher, and either a data-capable Micro USB cable or Bluetooth. Wireless play also requires a charged controller and Bluetooth hardware; a USB Bluetooth adapter can add Bluetooth to a desktop that lacks it.
A charge-only Micro USB cable can power the controller without carrying input data. If Windows does not react when the controller is connected, test a known data-capable cable before assuming that the DualShock 4 is faulty.

How do you connect a PS4 controller to Fortnite on PC with USB?
USB is the recommended first method because it avoids Bluetooth pairing, battery, interference, and additional input software.
- Close Fortnite if Fortnite is running.
- Connect the DualShock 4 to the PC with a data-capable Micro USB cable.
- Press the PS button on the controller.
- Wait for Windows to detect the controller.
- Launch Fortnite only after the controller is connected.
- Press Esc to open Fortnite’s menu.
- Select Settings.
- Open the controller or gamepad settings tab. Fortnite may identify the area with a controller icon rather than identical wording after an update.
- Open Controller Mapping and choose a preset such as Old School, Quick Builder, Combat Pro, Builder Pro, or Custom.
- If Fortnite displays a controller-platform selector, choose the controller platform you are using.
- Select Apply.
Epic’s documented Fortnite controller path is menu → Settings → Controller Mapping, where these presets and an Apply control are available; labels and icon placement can change between Fortnite updates. See Epic’s controller configuration instructions.

How do you connect a PS4 controller to Fortnite wirelessly with Bluetooth?
Bluetooth can connect a DualShock 4 without a cable, but detection depends on the PC’s Bluetooth hardware, drivers, Windows pairing state, launcher behavior, and Fortnite’s handling of the controller.
- Make sure the controller’s player indicator is off.
- Disconnect the USB cable if one is attached.
- Hold the SHARE button, then press and hold the PS button.
- Keep both buttons held until the light bar begins flashing.
- Open Bluetooth settings in Windows.
- In Windows 11, go to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Add device → Bluetooth.
- In Windows 10, go to Settings → Devices → Bluetooth & other devices → Add Bluetooth or other device → Bluetooth.
- Select Wireless Controller when it appears.
- Complete pairing, then launch Fortnite and test the controls.
Sony’s pairing procedure uses SHARE + PS until the light bar flashes. Sony also states that a DualShock 4 can be paired with only one device at a time, so moving between a PS4 and a PC may require pairing again. The PlayStation Controller Support page provides additional pairing information.
If the PC has no built-in Bluetooth, use a USB Bluetooth adapter. TP-Link’s UB500 support page lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 downloads and notes that hardware revisions differ, so match the driver to the adapter’s exact hardware version. TP-Link’s product page describes the UB500 as a Bluetooth 5.4 USB adapter for Windows 10 and Windows 11, while regional availability can vary; check the support page and product page before buying.

How do you configure the DualShock 4 in Fortnite?
After Windows and Fortnite recognize the controller, use Fortnite’s controller configuration area to choose a preset or assign controls manually.
- Preset: Start with a familiar layout such as Builder Pro or choose Custom.
- Custom mapping: Change button assignments for combat, building, editing, and interaction.
- Look and aim sensitivity: Adjust camera and aiming speed gradually rather than changing every setting at once.
- Build and edit controls: Verify these separately because a layout can feel correct for movement but awkward during building.
- Dead zones: Increase a dead zone only when a stick drifts; excessive dead-zone settings can reduce fine control.
- Vibration: Enable or disable it according to preference.
- Controller platform: Select the platform shown by Fortnite when the option is available.
Epic explains that PC players using a controller can select the controller they are using in the controller configuration area, and Epic’s Fortnite controls documentation covers in-game control customization.
What should you do if Windows sees the controller but Fortnite does not?
If Windows lists the DualShock 4 but Fortnite ignores it, the connection is probably established and the remaining problem is game, launcher, or input-layer recognition.
- Exit Fortnite completely.
- Disconnect and reconnect the controller.
- Confirm that Windows still lists Wireless Controller for Bluetooth or shows the connected USB device.
- Restart the Epic Games Launcher.
- Launch Fortnite only after the controller is connected.
- Test the controller over USB, even if Bluetooth was the original goal.
- Close Steam and other controller utilities.
- If Bluetooth still fails, install and configure DS4Windows as a fallback.
- Restart Fortnite after DS4Windows detects the controller.
Pairing in Windows proves only that Windows established a connection. It does not prove that Fortnite has selected the controller, that the buttons are mapped correctly, or that another input tool is not intercepting the signals.

DS4Windows is a third-party, free and open-source input mapper for Windows 10 and Windows 11. DS4Windows is useful when Bluetooth pairing succeeds but Fortnite or the Epic Games Launcher does not respond to native PlayStation input; DS4Windows is not required merely because the controller is wireless.
- Download DS4Windows from the project’s official download page.
- Install the runtime and drivers when DS4Windows prompts you to do so.
- Connect the DualShock 4 by Micro USB, Bluetooth, or Sony’s wireless adaptor.
- Open DS4Windows.
- Confirm that the controller appears in the Controllers list.
- Use the default profile for the first test.
- If Fortnite still does not respond, set output emulation to an Xbox 360/XInput controller.
- Start or restart Fortnite and test the controls.
The DS4Windows project documents DualShock 4 support, Bluetooth and USB connection methods, and installation of the ViGEmBus driver. Disable Steam’s PlayStation and Xbox controller-configuration support when using DS4Windows, as advised by the DS4Windows project. Running Steam Input and DS4Windows together can translate the same controller twice and cause double inputs or erratic controls.

Which connection method should you use?
Use USB first when you want the shortest setup and the easiest diagnosis. Use native Bluetooth when your PC already has reliable Bluetooth and you want wireless play. Add a Bluetooth adapter only when the PC lacks Bluetooth. Use DS4Windows when native detection fails, especially when Fortnite ignores a controller that Windows can see.
| Method | Advantages | Trade-offs | Best choice when |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB cable | Fewest setup variables; charges the controller; easiest to troubleshoot | Cable limits seating distance; a charge-only or damaged cable will not transmit input | You want Fortnite working quickly or need a diagnostic baseline |
| Built-in Bluetooth | Wireless and requires no extra adapter | Pairing and detection can vary with drivers, interference, battery, and launcher behavior | Your PC already has stable Bluetooth |
| USB Bluetooth adapter | Adds Bluetooth to a desktop without built-in wireless | Requires an adapter and possibly a matching driver; quality varies | Your PC has no Bluetooth |
| Sony DUALSHOCK 4 USB Wireless Adaptor | First-party hardware designed for DualShock 4 PC use | Availability and pricing may vary | You specifically prefer Sony hardware |
| DS4Windows | Can expose the controller as an XInput device for Fortnite | Third-party driver layer; possible conflicts; Xbox prompts may appear | Windows connects the controller but Fortnite does not respond |
| Steam Input | Strong PlayStation-controller support inside Steam | Fortnite normally uses the Epic Games Launcher, so Steam adds another input and launcher layer | You already use Steam and understand the extra configuration |
Steam officially documents PlayStation 4 controller support through Steam Input, but Steam Input support inside Steam does not automatically guarantee translation for Fortnite launched directly through Epic. Treat Steam as an alternative path, not a universal Epic Games Launcher fix; see the Steamworks PS4 controller documentation.
How do you troubleshoot common DualShock 4 problems?
The controller only charges
A DualShock 4 that lights up but supplies no input is commonly connected with a charge-only cable, a cable with damaged data lines, a loose Micro USB port, or a problematic USB port or driver.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Try a known data-capable Micro USB cable.
- Try another USB port on the PC.
- Press the PS button after connecting.
- Test the controller on another PC or PS4 if available.
- Check Windows’ controller or Bluetooth device list.
Bluetooth pairing fails
Bluetooth pairing can fail when the controller is still connected to the PS4, the wrong buttons are used, the battery is low, the PC lacks Bluetooth, or the adapter driver is missing or incompatible.
- Turn off the PS4 or disconnect the controller from it.
- Hold SHARE + PS until the light bar flashes.
- Remove an old Wireless Controller entry in Windows and pair again.
- Install the correct Bluetooth-adapter driver.
- Try USB if pairing continues to fail.
Xbox prompts appear
Xbox prompts usually mean Fortnite is receiving the controller as an Xbox/XInput device, particularly through DS4Windows. The prompts are a visual convention and do not necessarily mean that movement or button input is broken.

- The Dualshock 4 wireless controller can be easily recharged by plugging it into your PlayStation 4 system, even when in rest mode, or with any standard charger using a USB cable (type A to micro B sold separately)
Double inputs or repeated actions occur
Double inputs usually indicate that two systems are translating the same controller, such as Steam Input and DS4Windows running together.
- Close Steam.
- Exit DS4Windows.
- Relaunch only one controller mapper.
- When using DS4Windows, disable Steam controller-configuration support as recommended by the DS4Windows project.
- Reconnect the controller after changing the configuration.
The controller disconnects during play
Disconnects can result from a low battery, Bluetooth interference, a weak or poorly positioned adapter, a damaged cable, idle behavior, or USB power-management behavior. Test wired USB first: stable wired play points toward a Bluetooth or wireless-environment problem rather than a Fortnite mapping problem.
Touchpad, motion, speaker, or headset features do not work
Do not assume that every PS4 feature works on PC. Sony’s PC support covers connectivity, while specialized features vary by title and connection method. Ordinary Fortnite play primarily depends on the sticks, triggers, face buttons, D-pad, and menu controls; the touchpad and Share button are not required for ordinary gameplay.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you verify that Fortnite is ready for a match?
Before joining a competitive match, complete this short check in the lobby or Creative:
- The left stick moves the character.
- The right stick moves the camera.
- L2 and R2 register correctly and are not reversed.
- The face buttons and D-pad work.
- Options opens the game menu.
- Keyboard and controller inputs do not fight each other.
- There is no double movement or repeated button activation.
- The controller stays connected for several minutes.
If the controller passes the wired test but fails wirelessly, keep playing by USB while troubleshooting Bluetooth. If the controller works in Windows but not Fortnite, restart the launcher and game, close competing input software, then use DS4Windows only if native USB or Bluetooth detection remains unsuccessful.
Is using a PS4 controller on Fortnite PC allowed?
Yes. Epic’s support guidance says that using an external controller by itself does not result in a Fortnite account ban, although Epic does not guarantee compatibility with every peripheral or provide technical support for every external device.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a PS4 controller on Fortnite PC without Steam?
Yes. You can connect a DualShock 4 directly by data-capable Micro USB or Bluetooth and play Fortnite through the Epic Games Launcher without Steam. DS4Windows is only a fallback for recognition or XInput problems.
Do I need DS4Windows for Fortnite?
No. DS4Windows is not universally required. USB may work without extra software, and native Bluetooth may work directly; DS4Windows is useful when Fortnite does not respond to a controller Windows has detected.
Can I connect a PS4 controller to Fortnite PC without Bluetooth?
A Windows PC without built-in Bluetooth can use a USB Bluetooth adapter, or the controller can be used with a data-capable Micro USB cable. USB is the simplest option for immediate troubleshooting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy does Fortnite show Xbox buttons with my PS4 controller?
Fortnite usually shows Xbox prompts when DS4Windows exposes the DualShock 4 as an Xbox/XInput controller. Xbox icons do not necessarily mean that the controller is malfunctioning.
Why does my PS4 controller work in Windows but not Fortnite?
Windows pairing confirms only that Windows established a connection. Restart Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher, reconnect the controller before launching, close Steam and other controller utilities, test USB, and then try DS4Windows with XInput output if needed.
The Bottom Line
For Fortnite on Windows, connect the DualShock 4 by a known data-capable Micro USB cable first. If wireless play is preferred, pair it with SHARE + PS and test Fortnite after Windows lists “Wireless Controller.” Use DS4Windows only when native detection fails, and run one input layer at a time.
