Why the “bill” group works

“Bill” can mean paper money or an invoice, and it can also refer to a bird’s beak or be a shortened form of the name William. The four words in the purple group each point to one of those meanings.

The card-related group consists of verbs used when handling or playing with cards. “Deck” is part of the category clue; the available answer coverage does not indicate that a physical deck is required to play Connections.
