“Console commands” can mean commands typed into a computer’s command-line shell—or cheats and developer commands entered in a particular game. This guide uses the computing meaning: the terminal is the text interface, the shell interprets what you type, and command-line tools perform tasks. Which commands work depends on your operating system and shell.
What are console commands?
In general computing, a console command is text entered at a command-line prompt to ask a computer to perform an action. You can type commands interactively or put them in a script for repeated execution. Microsoft Learn describes a command shell as an interactive command-line interface, also called a Read-Eval-Print Loop (REPL): it reads input, evaluates it, and returns a result. Terminal, shell, and command: what is the difference?
- Terminal: The application that provides the text window and hosts a shell. Examples include Windows Terminal, Windows Console Host, and Terminal for macOS.
- Shell: The program that accepts your input and interprets commands. PowerShell, Windows Command Shell, bash, and zsh are examples.
- Command-line tool: A program or shell feature that carries out a task when invoked from the shell.
People often use “terminal,” “shell,” and “console” interchangeably in casual conversation, but they refer to different parts of the process. Opening a terminal gives you a place to work; the active shell determines how commands are understood.
Which commands work on your computer?
There is no universal command list. Syntax and available commands depend on the operating system, the shell, and sometimes the version or installed tools. Microsoft identifies bash as popular on Linux and zsh as popular on macOS, but a particular computer may use another shell or a different configuration.

On Windows, the two command environments most likely to be confused are Command Prompt and PowerShell. “Command Prompt” refers to the Windows Command shell, whose executable is cmd.exe. PowerShell is a separate command-line shell and scripting language. Microsoft recommends PowerShell for robust, up-to-date Windows automation; its Windows Commands reference covers commands available in supported Windows and Windows Server versions.

As Microsoft explains in its PowerShell overview, PowerShell includes its own language features and commands while also running native programs. A Windows batch file started from PowerShell is executed through cmd.exe; that does not make PowerShell and Command Prompt interchangeable.

Why can two commands with similar names behave differently?
A shell can recognize several kinds of commands: language keywords, programs installed on the operating system, and commands supplied by the shell itself. PowerShell cmdlets, for example, belong to the PowerShell environment. A command name that exists in one shell may be absent in another, or may have different syntax or effects. Check which shell a guide targets before copying its command.
What happens when a command runs?
Many command-line applications work with text streams. A program can read text from standard input and write results to standard output. That output may appear in the terminal, be saved to a file, or be passed through a pipe to another command. This is why command-line tools can be combined into workflows rather than used only one at a time. Microsoft’s stream documentation describes this input-and-output model.

Does “console commands” mean commands in a video game?
In gaming, “console commands” often means commands entered into a game’s developer console, cheat interface, or in-game command prompt. Those commands are specific to the game and may depend on its platform, version, server settings, or whether cheats are enabled. The computing shell commands described here are not a general list of game cheats. To find commands for a particular game, identify the game and platform first.

How to find a safe, relevant command
- Identify the target. Decide whether you mean a computer shell or a specific game’s console.
- Check the environment. For computer commands, note your operating system and active shell—such as PowerShell, Command Prompt, bash, or zsh.
- Use documentation for that environment. Confirm the command’s syntax and supported versions in the relevant official reference.
- Understand the effect before running it. A shell executes the command you provide; do not paste unfamiliar commands without knowing what they will change or launch.
