Verdict: Contabo is a plausible low-level hosting option for an always-on YouTube stream, but its published specifications do not prove that any particular plan can encode and deliver your chosen stream continuously. Its VPS plans advertise ports from 200 Mbit/s to 1 Gbit/s and unlimited traffic, while vCPUs are shared and traffic is subject to fair use. What Contabo can—and cannot—tell you about a 24/7 stream
Contabo provides virtual private servers on which you can install an encoder, configure it to send a prepared video or playlist to YouTube, and arrange for it to restart if the process or connection fails. That makes a VPS a viable building block, not a turnkey streaming service. You remain responsible for the software, stream key, encoding load, monitoring, recovery, and any recording you want to keep.
The available evidence is a review of published specifications, not a hands-on test. It does not establish real sustained throughput, CPU availability under load, outage rates, or that a specific Contabo plan will reliably encode a particular stream around the clock. Treat suitability as something to validate with your own workload rather than a guaranteed result.
Contabo VPS specifications and pricing terms
Contabo’s US pricing page lists Core VPS plans from Cloud VPS 4 through Cloud VPS 18. Across that listed range, the published resources are 4–18 vCPU cores, 8–96 GB RAM, 100–600 GB SSD storage, and port speeds from 200 Mbit/s to 1 Gbit/s. Those headline resources need qualification. Contabo’s VPS documentation says its KVM virtual servers use shared vCPU cores and fixed RAM allocation. A listed vCPU count therefore does not mean you have that many dedicated physical cores, nor does it guarantee a software encoder can sustain a given resolution. Contabo VPS documentation.
Will the network handle your stream?
Compare your target stream bitrate with the advertised port as an initial capacity check, not as proof of real sustained throughput. YouTube’s current encoding guidance recommends these H.264 targets:

The rates are small relative to the port speeds advertised on Contabo’s listed US plans, but the VPS also needs stable outbound service and headroom. Actual performance can depend on conditions not established by the published specifications. Contabo says there is no default bandwidth limit on its VPS products, but its fair-use policy requires traffic to fit typical server workloads and allows throttling for exceptionally high or disruptive use. The company says it will notify customers if usage exceeds the policy and work with them on a solution. “Unlimited traffic” is therefore not an unconditional promise of unlimited sustained outbound throughput. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. It also recommends testing and monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current guidance and options by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

CPU, encoding, and choosing a plan
For a stream that is already encoded and only needs to be transmitted, the workload differs from one that must be encoded or transcoded on the VPS. In either case, shared vCPUs mean the published core count alone cannot settle whether a plan has enough capacity. Your target resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder settings, and any other server work all affect the requirement.
There is no evidence here that establishes a single best Contabo plan for continuous YouTube streaming. Compare the specific plan’s price and commitment, shared compute, RAM and storage, advertised port, your chosen stream settings, the fair-use terms, and how you will monitor and recover the stream. Then test the actual configuration over a sustained period and check both stream health and resource use before relying on it.

What a VPS does not solve: YouTube rules and archives
Live-stream eligibility and setup
YouTube’s basic prerequisites include a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its operational guidance calls for testing the encoder, checking the Live Control Room preview, monitoring audio and video quality, and checking archive files. A VPS does not bypass channel eligibility or make the stream healthy by itself. Consult YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance before going live.
Copyright and reused material
A 24/7 schedule does not grant permission to broadcast music, video, or other copyrighted material. Use content you own or are authorized to stream, and consider YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules when building a recurring playlist. Avoid assuming that permission to use a recording also covers every composition, performance, or territory it contains. A continuous live feed is not a guaranteed replay
YouTube says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but one longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube’s exact warning is: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If preserving a complete replay matters, plan for stream segmentation or restarts and keep a local archive backup. An always-on live feed and a complete replay are separate outcomes. YouTube guidance on archiving live streams.
Risks to plan for before relying on Contabo
- Shared CPU variability: advertised vCPU counts do not demonstrate sustained encoding performance. Validate your stream settings on the chosen plan.
- Traffic policy: unlimited traffic remains subject to fair use and possible throttling in exceptional or disruptive cases.
- Operational responsibility: a VPS is infrastructure; it does not by itself ensure that the encoder starts, the stream reconnects, or someone notices a failure.
- Replay gaps: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived by YouTube. Plan a separate recording or replay strategy if needed.
- Term commitment: the listed US page presents monthly rates for a 24-month term. Check the current terms rather than treating that displayed monthly rate as a month-to-month price.
