To switch prerecorded videos without ending a 24/7 YouTube live stream, change the media source or playlist in the encoder or cloud playout service while leaving its outgoing stream running. Do not stop the encoder or choose YouTube’s End Stream control: YouTube says stopping the encoder’s transmission ends the stream. The exact source-switch controls depend on the software or service you use.
How switching videos works
YouTube receives a continuous feed from an encoder. YouTube Help defines an encoder this way: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” The encoder sends that feed to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key; the key acts as the encoder’s destination credential. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
The distinction is between changing what the encoder plays and stopping what it sends. Change the prerecorded-video source inside the encoder or playout service, but keep the encoder output connected. If the encoder stops transmitting, YouTube’s documented stop action ends the stream. Do not use the encoder’s stop control or YouTube’s End Stream control when your aim is to keep the current live session active.
Switch the source without stopping the feed
- Identify where playback is controlled. Find the media source, playlist, or playout controls in the encoder or cloud service currently sending your YouTube feed. The source material establishes this general workflow, but not a universal button sequence; controls vary by product.
- Prepare the next video or playlist item. Confirm that the intended recording is available to the encoder or service and is ready to play. Follow that product’s current documentation for adding, scheduling, or replacing media.
- Change the playing source within that system. Use its source or playlist controls to move to the next video. Keep the outgoing encoder connection running; do not stop transmission to make the change.
- Check the YouTube output. Preview the live stream and verify that the intended video and audio are reaching YouTube. YouTube recommends previewing the stream, checking accessibility, monitoring audio and video quality, and testing encoder failover. See YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder.
Do not assume that changing a source is seamless: the reviewed YouTube guidance does not specify a universal transition behavior or guarantee that every encoder switches without a brief interruption. Check the selected product’s instructions and monitor the live output during the change.

Choosing a way to play prerecorded videos continuously
Local encoder
A software encoder such as OBS can send a feed to YouTube; YouTube lists OBS among its verified software encoders. That establishes OBS as an encoder option, not a specific playlist-switch procedure. Consult the current OBS documentation for the controls in your version, and keep the encoder output running when you change media.
Cloud playout
YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud-based service for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded YouTube videos. This makes it a documented option for continuous prerecorded playout, but the listing does not establish its current pricing, reliability, or exact switching controls. Check the service’s current instructions before relying on a particular workflow.

Camera-based streaming
YouTube describes CamStreamer App as an in-camera Axis solution for continuous and scheduled streaming. That is relevant to a camera-source workflow, rather than a direct recommendation for switching between prerecorded video files.
YouTube supports software encoders and standalone hardware encoders, but the guidance cited here does not establish that a dedicated hardware purchase is necessary for switching videos.

Protect the archive and monitor stream health
A stream remaining live does not guarantee that YouTube will preserve its full length as an archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a 24/7 broadcast, arrange a local archive backup rather than relying on YouTube to retain the entire stream. The 12-hour guidance and recommendation are from YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
During operation, check the actual YouTube output for access, picture, and sound, and test your encoder’s failover arrangements. YouTube recommends these monitoring and testing steps; they do not amount to a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.

Troubleshooting a failed switch
- The YouTube live session ended. The encoder may have stopped sending content, or you may have used YouTube’s End Stream control. Restart the encoder connection and start a new YouTube live session as needed; for the next source change, use the playout controls without stopping transmission.
- The old video keeps playing. The change may not have been applied in the system that controls the active output. Check the encoder or cloud service’s current source and playlist instructions, then confirm the result in YouTube’s live preview.
- The stream is live but the video or audio is wrong. Inspect the active source and monitor the output in YouTube. YouTube recommends checking audio and video quality; the exact correction depends on the encoder and source.
- The live stream is available, but the full archive is missing. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording or other backup if you need a complete archive.
- A failover has not been tested. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover. Check the instructions for your encoder or service and verify the resulting output rather than assuming recovery will work.
