If your YouTube stream keeps disconnecting from a Contabo VPS, first check OBS’s network-dropped-frames counter and logs. Rising network drops point to a connection that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate—but do not, on their own, prove a Contabo outage. Then check the VPS state, network interface, firewall rules, service status and route. The exact cause depends on your stream logs, server configuration and the path to YouTube’s ingest server.
1. Check whether the disconnect is network-related
In OBS, open View > Stats and watch the dropped-frames counter while streaming. OBS explains that network-dropped frames occur when the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can lead to a disconnection. Record the time of the failure, the stream bitrate you configured, whether the network-dropped-frames count was increasing, and whether OBS recovered automatically or disconnected. These details help distinguish a connection problem from other symptoms; the counter alone does not identify whether the problem is on your side, the VPS, the route, or the ingest service.
2. Check the VPS and recent network changes
- Confirm that the VPS is running in the Contabo customer panel.
- Review recent changes to network settings, firewall rules or streaming configuration, especially changes made shortly before the disconnects began.
- If you cannot reliably reach the server’s management connection, try a different access network and check whether a VPN, local firewall or corporate network restriction could be affecting that access.
A management-access problem is useful evidence, but it does not by itself diagnose the VPS’s outbound route to YouTube. Contabo’s unreachable-server checklist covers these initial checks.

3. Inspect the VPS network interface and firewall
If the server is up but streaming still fails, check the network configuration using Contabo’s documented console or management method for your operating system. Verify that the network interface is up and that the configured address, subnet and gateway are correct. If the OS or network setup is unfamiliar, do not paste in generic commands or change interface settings blindly; a mistaken network change can cut off your access to the server.
Review both the Contabo firewall and the guest operating system’s firewall rules. Check the direction of any rule that could affect the stream. Contabo documents that, once its firewall is activated, inbound traffic is dropped by default while outbound traffic is unrestricted by default. That provider-level default does not rule out a restrictive guest firewall or a separately configured provider rule. See Contabo’s firewall documentation.

4. Check Contabo status, then investigate the route
Check Contabo’s service status for an incident affecting your server or data center. If no incident is listed but the evidence suggests a route problem, capture traceroute or MTR output with timestamps and give it to Contabo support. Their connection troubleshooting guidance recommends route results when investigating suspected routing faults.
A route test is evidence for support, not a guarantee that every hop will respond or proof by itself of where the fault lies. Preserve the test output and the time it was run so it can be compared with the stream failure.

5. Test whether the problem is specific to YouTube
OBS suggests trying a different streaming destination as a diagnostic. If the stream behaves differently, that can narrow the possibilities, but it does not conclusively prove that YouTube or Contabo is responsible. OBS also notes that security software or firewall rules may interfere with its connection to a streaming server. Treat the comparison as one clue alongside the OBS logs and route evidence, not as a guaranteed fix. See the OBS connection troubleshooting guide.
What Contabo’s bandwidth figures do—and do not—tell you
Contabo says its VPS, VDS and dedicated servers have no default bandwidth limit, subject to its fair-use policy; it reserves the ability to throttle exceptionally high or disruptive use and describes such action as rare. Contabo also lists VPS and VDS port speeds ranging from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps. These are provider specifications, not a measurement of your instance’s sustained upload to the YouTube ingest route you are using, nor a guarantee of stream stability. Compare your configured stream bitrate with the connection evidence in OBS rather than assuming that a listed port speed proves the VPS can sustain that bitrate to YouTube at all times.
