Choose Contexto for a simple closeness rank and a documented unlimited practice mode; choose Semantle if you prefer a similarity score and proximity indicator, or want to try Semantle Junior. Both are semantic word-guessing games with unlimited guesses. The main difference is how each game reports how close your guesses are to the hidden word.

How Contexto and Semantle work

In both games, you submit words and use their relationship in meaning to the hidden answer to guide your next guess. Letter resemblance is not the point: spelling clues do not tell you whether a guess is semantically close.

Contexto: a rank that gets lower as you get closer

Contexto ranks each guess against the answer in what its rules describe as a 70,000-word vocabulary. Rank 1 is the answer, so a lower number means a closer match in meaning. The game says its ranking model is trained on how words are used together in ordinary text, but its reviewed pages do not name a specific model or corpus. Contexto’s rules explain the feedback and guess limit; its About page describes the ranking.

Semantle: a similarity score and proximity signal

Semantle returns a semantic similarity score for each guess and shows a proximity indicator when a guess is among the thousand nearest words. Its FAQ says the game uses word2vec and names its dataset as GoogleNews-vectors-negative300. Semantle’s FAQ describes the scoring, daily puzzle, and replay options.

Which game should you play?

Choose Contexto if you want rank-based feedback

  • A numbered rank is more intuitive to you than a similarity score.
  • You want a documented unlimited practice mode after the daily puzzle.

Choose Semantle if you want score-based feedback or another mode

  • You prefer to track a similarity score and use the proximity indicator.
  • You want to try Semantle Junior or explore its archive.

Either fits if you like semantic puzzles

If you enjoy finding a hidden answer through associations and meaning rather than letter positions, both offer that core experience and unlimited guesses.

Is Contexto easier than Semantle?

There is no established objective winner on difficulty. The official sources reviewed do not provide a comparable difficulty study, independent player-outcome data, or a direct satisfaction comparison. What feels easier is more likely to depend on whether you find a rank or a similarity score more useful, and whether you want practice play or Semantle Junior.
