Remedy describes support for both hard-hitting close-range combat and tactical play with abilities such as Mold Turrets, so the strongest starting setup is the one that fits how you want to fight—and the abilities you have actually unlocked.
How combat abilities fit into a build
Dylan Faden’s shapeshifting melee weapon, the Aberrant, anchors combat. Supernatural abilities and Talents round out the loadout, while Resonant encounters are a key source of new abilities. Remedy’s Lead Gameplay Designer Sergey Mohov describes a loop in which melee hits restore Combat Ability resource, abilities stun enemies and create openings for executions, and executions temporarily increase melee damage. The design rewards connecting melee pressure with ability use, rather than treating them as separate systems. Remedy’s combat overview explains the intended loop.
Build 1: Heavy close-range pressure
Who it suits
Choose this direction if you enjoy committing to melee range and making deliberate, high-impact attacks. Remedy identifies heavy close-range combat as a supported playstyle.
How to shape it
- Try a heavier Aberrant form that feels comfortable to wield.
- Look for Talents and passive effects that reinforce the damage or stagger you want from melee pressure.
- Use abilities to stun or otherwise open enemies, then capitalize on the execution window and its temporary melee-damage increase.
This is a playstyle-based starting point, not a proven optimal loadout: the available material does not establish a top weapon, Talent combination, or damage ranking. One TechRadar reviewer said a hammer suited his approach better than his initial spear choice and described a later flame ability as increasing damage and Falter output. That is a personal example, not evidence that either choice is best for every player. Read the reviewer’s account.

Build 2: Tactical ability support
Who it suits
Try this direction if you prefer controlling the field and letting abilities contribute beyond direct melee attacks. Remedy specifically gives tactical play using summons such as Mold Turrets as an example.
How to shape it
- Keep a melee form you can rely on, since melee hits help replenish Combat Ability resource.
- Pair it with summon or other control abilities you have unlocked.
- Favor Talents and Artifacts that support the resource demands and combat loop you want to use.
A summon-centered setup depends on unlocking the relevant ability and selecting supporting options that suit your own loop. Remedy says some Resonant rewards branch toward distinct playstyles, but the available information does not establish a fixed unlock order or a named, guaranteed launch combination. Remedy’s progression overview describes branching rewards.

How to choose between the two
Use these questions to decide which direction to test first:
- Distance and tempo: Do you want to stay close and commit to heavy attacks, or create space for abilities to shape the fight?
- Target pressure: Are you focused on putting pressure on one enemy, or on tools that help manage a wider fight?
- Resource management: Do you enjoy weaving melee hits into ability use to replenish Combat Ability resource?
- Preferred payoff: Is your satisfying moment a close-range execution, or seeing a tactical ability work independently?
When experimenting, change one part of the build at a time. That makes it easier to tell whether a weapon, ability, Talent, or Artifact actually improved the fights that give you trouble.

First playthrough choices and New Game Plus
Do not plan a first-playthrough build as if every option will be available. Remedy says some Resonant rewards offer branching choices, and a first run will not unlock everything. Treat an offered choice as a direction for the playthrough rather than a temporary detour you can necessarily undo by collecting every alternative.
Remedy says New Game Plus carries forward Aberrant upgrades, health and Combat Ability resource improvements, unlocked supernatural combat abilities, Talents, and Artifacts. Traversal abilities remain tied to story progression. New Game Plus also allows multiple different combat abilities from the same boss to be equipped and adds a fourth Artifact slot; the first-playthrough limit is three. These options make broader combinations possible on a later run, but do not establish a single best combination. Remedy’s New Game Plus explanation covers what carries over.

Use Assist Mode if the difficulty is the problem
If combat friction—not your build’s identity—is what is getting in the way, consider Assist Mode before rebuilding around a single difficult encounter. Remedy says you can change settings at any time, including Power Recovery Speed, Incoming Damage, Outgoing Damage, Outgoing Falter, Perfect Dodge Window, Enemy Aggression, and projectile speed. You can select a preset and fine-tune individual settings. Remedy also says achievements and trophies are not gated behind Assist Mode. Remedy’s Assist Mode overview lists the available adjustments.
