Use GameChat’s C Menu to mute your microphone or adjust camera video. You can use voice chat without a camera: Nintendo Switch 2 has a built-in microphone, while sending video requires a compatible USB camera. For children under 16, parents manage GameChat access, friend approvals, and camera permissions through the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app.
How to mute your microphone in GameChat
The console’s built-in microphone supports GameChat voice chat, so a separate microphone is not required. Nintendo says the microphone adjusts its volume to the surroundings and filters background noise and game audio. Nintendo’s GameChat support information describes the built-in microphone and service.
- During GameChat, open the C Menu.
- Open the microphone settings and select “Mute microphone when entering a chat session.”
- You will enter a chat muted. Unmute yourself in the C Menu when you want to speak.
This is a microphone control; camera settings and the camera’s privacy shutter affect video, not voice transmission. Menu wording may change with system updates.
How to turn off or limit camera video
Camera use is optional for voice chat and required only if you want to send video. During a session, use the C Menu’s camera-video settings to control how much of your picture is displayed. These settings control the video feed; they do not turn off the console’s microphone.

If you use the separately sold Nintendo Switch 2 Camera, its physical privacy shutter can stop video transmission during a chat. Nintendo describes it as a way to switch between displaying your picture and shutting off video transmission. The shutter is a physical video control, not a microphone mute.
Choosing a camera for GameChat video
Video chat needs a compatible USB camera. Nintendo recommends its own Switch 2 Camera for the optimal experience, but other USB cameras may work; compatibility is not guaranteed. Use the console’s “Test USB Camera” feature in system settings to check another camera.

Nintendo does not establish a performance comparison between these options here. If you only want voice chat, you do not need to buy a camera.
Managing GameChat for a child or supervised account
Nintendo says children under 16 need the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app set up to use GameChat. Parents can manage supervised children’s friend approvals and camera access in the app; these controls should not be assumed to apply identically to every adult account.

- Approve friends: A child cannot use GameChat with an unapproved friend. If no friends are approved, the child cannot invite anyone to a room or accept invitations.
- Set camera permission: Parents can require a request for each video chat or disable video chat. When a request arrives, the parent can approve or deny it.
- Control an approved session: A parent can adjust the camera field of view allowed for the child or withdraw permission while the session is underway.
- Review activity: The app can show GameChat session history, including who the child chatted with and for how long.

Nintendo’s GameChat FAQ says the service requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership and a persistent internet connection. The FAQ’s membership-free access period ran from June 5, 2025, through March 31, 2026; that limited exception has ended. Check Nintendo’s current GameChat FAQ for the policy in effect when you play.
