Control Resonant Reminded Me Why Boss Fights Can Be Good, Actually

The Dancer’s faster second form makes observation and rhythm matter more than rushing, turning its theater setting into part of the fight.

A good boss fight can change how you play before it lets you win. In CONTROL Resonant, The Dancer’s first phase looks manageable; its faster, more aggressive second form turns rushing into a liability. Zack Zwiezen’s eventual breakthrough was to slow down, watch the attacks, and move in rhythm. In a theater full of frozen spectators, that shift makes the fight feel less like a damage race and more like a performance.

Why The Dancer works as an example

Zwiezen’s account in Kotaku is compelling because the encounter changes his understanding of what it is asking him to do. The Dancer is a slender figure that moves through hops and chassés in a theater arena ringed by paralyzed, floating audience members. Zwiezen initially leans on aerial attacks, takes hits, and beats the opening form. Then the second form arrives faster and more aggressively, and the approach that got him through the first phase stops working.

Across several attempts, frustration makes him rush and take more damage. He considers changing the difficulty, but instead resets his approach: fewer jumps, less indiscriminate attacking, and more attention to the boss’s movement. He comes to see the opening as a rehearsal for patterns that matter later. On the successful attempt, he dodges in rhythm and describes the realization plainly: “I need to dance with this monster to defeat it.” That is his experience, not a guaranteed strategy for every player, but it shows how a fight can make learning itself feel like part of the fiction.

How a boss fight teaches without a tutorial

The encounter’s useful lesson is delivered through consequences. The initial phase gives Zwiezen time to encounter the boss’s movement; the more demanding form makes it worthwhile to recognize and respond to those patterns. The player’s change is concrete: stop treating every opening as an invitation to unload attacks, and use timing and observation instead.

That is the distinction between a boss that merely has a large health bar and one that tests a skill. The challenge is satisfying when the player can identify what went wrong, adjust, and feel that adjustment make a difference. Here, the theater setting strengthens the idea. Dodging and attacking in time with The Dancer makes the arena’s performance imagery part of the encounter rather than just scenery.

Remedy’s design intent: bosses as skill checks

The encounter also fits the design ambition described by Remedy’s developers. In a September 29, 2026 PlayStation Blog interview, Lead Gameplay Designer Sergey Mohov said the team intended boss fights as “skill checks” for players. He described a process that began with pitches, moved through prototyping and detailed creature-behavior specifications, and involved concept artists and writers in connecting visuals, space, zone theme, and identity.

Art Director Elmeri Raitanen said each Resonant boss was built around a theme, citing control inspired by mycelium or a hive mind, and said the team wanted to evoke awe and a sense of the majestic or divine. The Dancer’s performance-like movement and theater setting are a particularly legible example of mechanics and theme supporting one another. The broader point is not that every boss must be elegant or metaphorical, but that a memorable fight can make its fiction tangible through the actions it asks of the player.

Where the argument has limits

One effective encounter does not prove every boss fight in CONTROL Resonant succeeds. Reviews describe a more mixed experience. PC Gamer’s review calls the bosses more engaging threats to navigate, while criticizing some health bars as a slog and noting broader combat friction, including repetitive generic encounters and inconsistent targeting. GamesCreed’s review likewise praises the bosses’ visual distinction but says some become long health-bar grinds once their patterns are learned, with camera and targeting issues in certain aerial fights.

Worthplaying’s review offers a different useful observation: boss encounters can have varied attacks and distinct phases, sometimes interrupting the duel with minions or offering chances to recover health. Together, these reviews point to a meaningful design trade-off. A fight needs enough health and complexity to sustain tension, but repetition can turn a learned pattern into attrition if the player’s improved understanding no longer changes the experience.

What makes a boss fight worth remembering

The Dancer illustrates three useful tests for an encounter:

Rank #4
Control Ultimate Edition (PS5)
  • Uncover the mysteries. Can you handle the bureau's dark secrets? Unfold an epic supernatural struggle, filled with unexpected characters and bizarre events, as you search for your missing brother, and discover the truth that has brought you here
  • everything is your weapon. Unleash destruction through transforming weaponry and telekinetic powers. Discover New ways to annihilate your enemies as you harness powerful abilities to turn everything around you into a lethal weapon
  • explore a hidden world. Delve deep into the Ominous expanses of a secretive government Agency. Explore the bureau's shifting environments only to discover that there is always more than meets the eye
  • fight for control. Battle a relentless enemy through exciting missions and challenging boss fights to earn powerful upgrades that maximize abilities and customize your weaponry
  • experience true next-generation gaming with increased visual fidelity through 4K graphics, ray-tracing and a 60FPS performance mode
  • Readable learning: Can the player notice cues and change behavior, rather than simply repeat attacks?
  • Earned challenge: Does the fight test timing, observation, or another skill the game has prepared the player to use?
  • Thematic fit: Do the boss’s movement, arena, and mechanics reinforce the character or setting?
  • Fair duration: Does the health pool maintain pressure without making success feel like surviving repetition?

Zwiezen’s account makes a strong case for the first three: he observes, adapts, and experiences the theater’s dance motif through play. The fourth remains a fair question for boss design generally, especially given reviewers’ complaints about some Resonant fights. That tension is why the best boss fights can be good, actually: they turn a difficult encounter into a conversation between the game’s cues and the player’s decisions, but only when the conversation keeps moving.
