In CONTROL Resonant’s Unknown Zones, build a repeatable rhythm: use safe melee openings to restore Combat Ability resource, spend abilities to interrupt or stagger threats, then exploit execution openings before returning to attacks. Read enemy attacks and dodge deliberately; when a fight’s specific pressure point is the problem, adjust the matching Assist Mode setting rather than forcing one supposedly optimal build.
How to manage Combat Ability resource in a fight
Remedy describes CONTROL Resonant combat as close-range melee linked to supernatural abilities. Melee hits restore the Combat Ability resource, while abilities can stun enemies and create opportunities for executions. Executions temporarily increase melee damage. Together, those systems support a practical loop:
- Look for a safe melee opening. Land hits to restore Combat Ability resource, but do not treat every approach as safe; enemies can pressure you from multiple directions.
- Spend an ability with a purpose. Use it to interrupt, stun, or help create an execution opportunity instead of spending power without regard to the situation.
- Take the execution opening when it is available. Its temporary melee-damage boost rewards returning to attacks, after which the cycle can begin again.
This is a system-level approach, not a guaranteed sequence for every enemy or encounter. The official combat description does not establish exact timing, combos, or a universal resource allocation.
Read attacks and use dodges to control pressure
Sergey Mohov, Remedy Entertainment’s Lead Gameplay Designer, describes combat as “close-range and demanding, with enemies that require you to read their attacks, manage staggers and status effects, and time your dodges.” That makes attack-reading part of resource management: a well-timed response helps you avoid spending health or abilities simply because you approached at the wrong moment.

- Watch for attack cues before committing to close range.
- Use dodges to respond to threats rather than relying on constant movement or assuming melee pressure will always be safe.
- Pay attention to stagger and status effects; abilities and other combat tools can help shape openings, but the sources do not specify a single reliable combo.
Choose Aberrant Forms and abilities for your preferred role
The Aberrant shifts between Primary and Secondary Forms and has Combo Enders. Remedy says these options let players tune speed, range, and combat role within one build. Choose based on the distance and pace you prefer, or what a particular encounter asks of you; there is no evidence-backed best-in-slot form.
Builds can lean toward heavy close-range fighting or toward tactical ability use. For example, Mold Turrets attack independently and apply harmful status effects, giving a tactical setup another way to pressure enemies. This is an option, not a claim that Turrets outperform close-range play in every Unknown Zone.

Adjust Assist Mode to the problem that is stopping you
Assist Mode provides separate combat adjustments rather than forcing one overall difficulty choice. Mohov explains: “The idea is simple: instead of asking you to choose an overall difficulty, we let you change the specific parts of combat that aren’t working for you.” You can enable or disable Assist Mode during gameplay, and Remedy says trophies and achievements are not gated behind it.

Change the setting tied to your actual obstacle, then continue. If attack timing is the issue, for example, adjust dodge timing or projectile speed rather than also changing damage settings that are not causing trouble.

Use the Gap to strengthen your build
The Gap is where you shape a build around three pillars: supernatural Combat Abilities earned by defeating powerful Resonants, Aberrant Weapon Forms, and Talents that strengthen ability-and-melee synergy. Resonants are major boss encounters; defeating one grants a unique ability, and some offer branching choices. Remedy says it is not possible to unlock everything in one playthrough, so build choices involve trade-offs rather than completing every option at once.
Pick Talents around your combat rhythm
Talents can strengthen the relationship between ability use and melee. If your preferred loop depends on closing distance and attacking, consider that synergy when shaping the build. If you rely more on tactical abilities, weigh choices that support the way you spend and recover Combat Ability resource.

Treat Artifacts as conditional modifiers
Artifacts are equippable passive modifiers that can affect survivability, combat, exploration, or resource economy. Some come with conditions or trade-offs, so assess what an effect asks of you as well as what it improves. Remedy’s New Game Plus article says you can equip up to three Artifacts on a first playthrough and unlock a fourth slot in New Game Plus.

One PC Gamer reviewer reported reaching areas where enemies had scaled beyond Dylan’s current level after prioritizing story and side quests. The reviewer said returning to combat encounters and world activities helped bring him back up to par. That is one player’s experience, not an official rule that you must grind or complete a particular activity. If progression has left encounters feeling out of reach, optional activities and upgrades are reasonable things to consider before pushing ahead.

What the available guidance does—and does not—establish
Remedy’s official material explains combat systems, build options, and Assist Mode. It does not provide a tested Unknown Zone walkthrough, exact boss-phase solutions, patch-specific numeric tuning, or a verified ranking of builds. Use the systems above to respond to what a fight is asking of you: recover resource through safe melee, use abilities to create openings, tune the build to your preferred role, and adjust assistance when a particular combat demand is the barrier.
