Cooler Master CK721 Review: Is the Compact Wireless Mechanical Keyboard Worth It?

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: the Cooler Master CK721 is a well-equipped 65% mechanical keyboard whose three connection modes, metal top plate, rotary dial, wrist rest and portable 67-key layout make it appealing for mixed gaming and work setups. Its value is less certain if you demand premium switches, durable PBT keycaps, hot-swapping, flawless configuration software or long wireless battery life with RGB enabled. The CK721 is also marked discontinued on ASK Corporation’s listing, so any current purchase requires checking the exact variant, condition, included accessories and return policy.

That combination explains the split in published reviews. KitGuru gave it 8/10 in February 2022, while PCWorld called its value approximately average in August 2023. The difference is not a contradiction: the board is flexible and thoughtfully equipped, but its switches, keycaps, software and real-world battery behavior are ordinary rather than class-leading.

What the Cooler Master CK721 is

The CK721 is a 67-key, English-layout mechanical keyboard measuring approximately 65% of a full-size board. It keeps the alphanumeric block, arrow keys and a compact navigation arrangement while removing the dedicated function row and number pad. Function-layer commands provide access to secondary controls, and a rotary dial adds a physical control without making the keyboard wider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its defining feature is connectivity. You can use it as a wired USB keyboard, connect through the supplied 2.4 GHz receiver, or pair it over Bluetooth 5.1. The distributor lists support for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. That makes the CK721 suitable for a desktop, a laptop and mobile devices without buying separate keyboards.

#1 Best Overall
Cooler Master CK721 65% Hybrid Wireless 2.4GHz/Bluetooth Silver/White Mechanical Gaming Keyboard, Linear Red Switches, Customizable RGB, Ergonomic Design, 3-Way Dial (CK-721-SKTR1-US)
  • Reliable Mechanical Switches: Dominate in any type of game with mechanical switches good for 50 million keystrokes. All the responsiveness, accuracy, and tactile satisfaction you can handle.
  • Hybrid Wireless Technology: Choose between wired Type-C connectivity or your choice of wireless: 2.4 GHz for nearly lag-free input or Bluetooth 5.1 for easy, convenient connectivity.
  • Universal Compatibility: Compatible with virtually every modern OS and platform: Windows 8 and above, Mac OS X, iOS and Android - and easily soft-switch between all devices with a simple keypress.
  • 3-way Customizable Dial: The precision dial gives you the tactile controls of a turn or a press, customizable via software.
  • Portable 65% Layout & Soft Wrist Rest: Low-friction cloth to keep you comfortable during long gaming sessions along with compact layout and design, perfect for on-the-go use with mobile devices and laptops.

The hardware is built around an aluminum top plate, RGB lighting, a 2,000 mAh battery and a detachable wrist rest. At 334 × 118 × 37 mm and 764 g without the receiver or cable, it is small enough to travel with while still having more mass than a very light office keyboard. The trade-offs are painted ABS keycaps, non-hot-swappable switches, a narrow USB-C port and configuration software that reviewers found troublesome.

Layout and everyday usability

A compact 65% layout

A 65% layout saves desk space without removing the arrow keys, which are essential for many games, spreadsheets and editing applications. The CK721’s 67 keys are arranged for that compact footprint, but users moving from a full-size keyboard must learn the function layer for commands that previously had dedicated keys. Before buying, check the exact key legends in the listing photograph and confirm that the compact navigation arrangement suits your workflow.

The function layer is one of PCWorld’s positive points. It gives the keyboard more capability than the raw key count suggests, although using a layer is slower than pressing a dedicated key when you frequently use navigation, media or system commands. The arrangement is therefore a good fit for someone who wants a small gaming board and does not need a number pad every day. It is less suitable if you routinely enter numerical data or rely on dedicated Home, End, Insert and navigation clusters.

Dial, wrist rest and top plate

The rotary dial is a useful physical control on a compact board. KitGuru specifically praised its feel. A dial can be easier to adjust by touch than a function-layer shortcut, particularly when you are changing a continuous setting, but the practical benefit depends on how reliably the software lets you assign it and how often you use it.

The included wrist rest is an important part of the value calculation because it is supplied rather than an extra purchase. PCWorld counted it among the CK721’s advantages. KitGuru found the wrist-rest height less successful, so comfort is personal: users with a low desk or a shallow typing angle may prefer it, while others may find the elevation too high.

The aluminum top plate gives the keyboard a more substantial surface than a purely plastic chassis. KitGuru noted a removable top plate, while also reporting some keyboard flex. Those observations point to a board that looks and feels more substantial than its price-tier keycaps suggest, but not one that should be mistaken for an especially rigid enthusiast chassis.

  • Hybrid Wireless Technology: Choose between wired Type-C connectivity or your choice of wireless: 2.4 GHz for nearly lag-free input or Bluetooth 5.1 for easy, convenient connectivity.

Connection modes, polling and compatibility

The CK721 offers three ways to connect, and the specifications differ by mode. The figures below come from the Cooler Master owner’s manual and ASK Corporation’s distributor listing; they are specifications, not independent measurements of end-to-end latency in a particular game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Mode Connection Listed polling rate Listed response time Rollover
Wired USB 1,000 Hz 1 ms N-key rollover
2.4 GHz Dedicated wireless receiver 1,000 Hz 1 ms N-key rollover
Bluetooth 5.1 Bluetooth wireless 125 Hz 8 ms 6-key rollover

For gaming, wired and 2.4 GHz are the modes with the highest listed polling rate and N-key rollover. Bluetooth’s 125 Hz specification and 6-key rollover are adequate for general typing and many casual games, but Bluetooth is the compromise mode when you want the lowest stated response time or need to hold many keys simultaneously. In practice, wireless interference, the host device and the game itself also affect responsiveness; a specification alone does not prove a particular frame-to-input result.

The 2.4 GHz receiver is the best wireless choice for a gaming desktop or laptop when you want cable-free use without accepting Bluetooth’s listed limits. The receiver and a dongle extender are included according to KitGuru. Keep the receiver close to the keyboard if your computer’s rear ports or other wireless devices create interference.

USB is useful for competitive play, charging and firmware work. It also avoids the battery concern entirely while connected. The keyboard’s USB-C port is unusually narrow, however. PCWorld reported that some other USB-C cables did not fit, so retain the supplied cable unless a replacement has been checked for connector dimensions. Exact third-party cable compatibility is not established.

Operating-system support

The manual lists Windows 8 or later, Mac OS X 10.10 or later, Android and iOS. Those are source-era compatibility statements, not a guarantee that current configuration software or firmware still supports every present-day operating-system release. Basic keyboard input may work even when advanced remapping does not, so confirm current software support before relying on the CK721 for a specialized setup.

Switches and typing feel

Available switch types

The manual lists TTC Red, Blue and Brown options. Reds are generally the linear choice, Browns provide a tactile bump, and Blues provide a more pronounced tactile and clicky experience; the CK721’s exact switch availability depends on region and variant. ASK Corporation’s Japanese-market listings identify TTC Brown for the Grey model and TTC Red for the White and Sakura models.

White CK-721-SKTM1-US Japan release: February 18, 2022 TTC Red
Sakura Limited Edition CK-721-SKTR2-US Japan release: February 24, 2023 TTC Red

Do not assume that a photograph or color name identifies the switch. Listings can be region-specific, and the manual’s three-switch list is broader than the specific combinations on ASK Corporation’s page. Confirm the model number and switch type in the live listing.

What typing is like

Published impressions differ. KitGuru described the typing experience positively, while PCWorld found its tested switches wobbly and chattery. That difference may reflect sample variation, switch preference, review expectations or the particular switch version tested. It is safer to treat the CK721 as a conventional mid-range mechanical keyboard than as a guaranteed smooth typing upgrade.

The keycaps are OEM-profile ABS with painted, laser-engraved legends. ABS keeps weight and cost down, but painted surfaces can develop shine sooner than thicker PBT caps, especially on heavily used gaming keys. The CK721’s keycaps are therefore a clear compromise against boards aimed at enthusiasts. They are serviceable for normal use, but buyers seeking a long-term keycap upgrade should include replacement costs in the decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The switches are not hot-swappable. PCWorld explicitly identified that limitation. You cannot simply pull out a worn or disliked switch and install another compatible model; changing the switch type requires soldering work and carries a greater risk of damage. Choose the correct switch variant before buying rather than assuming you can tune the board later.

ASK Corporation lists a 50-million-keystroke switch life. That is a manufacturer or distributor specification, not an independent endurance test, and it does not predict the life of keycaps, stabilizers, batteries or wireless electronics.

Battery life and RGB lighting

The CK721 contains a 2,000 mAh battery. The owner’s manual advertises up to 73 hours with LEDs off. That is a best-case, source-era figure and should not be read as a universal runtime for every wireless mode or lighting pattern.

Cooler Master SK620 60% Silver White Mechanical Keyboard with Low Profile Blue Switches, New and Improved Keycaps, and Brushed Aluminum Design
  • Low Profile Switches - A reduced travel distance and actuation point with the same signature durability and precision.
  • Portable 60% Layout - Compact layout and design, perfect for on-the-go use with mobile devices and laptops.
  • Brushed Aluminum Design - Curved top plate, floating keycaps, and minimalistic design built with functionality in mind
  • Ergonomic Upgrades - New ergonomic keycaps and adjustable feet allow you the comfortable typing experience you want, your way.
  • Multiple OS Support - Use with MacOS and Windows 8 and above - and easily soft-switch between all devices with a simple keypress.
Source and condition Reported runtime
Cooler Master owner’s manual, LEDs off Up to 73 hours
KitGuru review, Bluetooth Approximately 73 hours
KitGuru review, 2.4 GHz Approximately 14 hours
PCWorld review, animated lighting A little over two days

PCWorld did not exhaust the battery during its lights-off use, so that report does not establish a precise maximum. The important practical point is that lighting and wireless mode have a large effect. If you use animated RGB and 2.4 GHz every day, plan for much more frequent charging than the 73-hour manual headline suggests. Bluetooth may last longer in KitGuru’s experience, but the result is a review observation rather than a guarantee for every host device or firmware version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RGB lighting is included, but KitGuru described the backlighting as dim. If bright legends in a dark room are a priority, inspect photographs and consider whether the lighting quality matters more to you than the wireless flexibility.

Software, remapping and reliability

The CK721’s hardware can be used without elaborate software, but advanced remapping and profile work depend on Cooler Master’s MasterPlus application. PCWorld reported that MasterPlus repeatedly hung and crashed while updating the keyboard and programming layouts. KitGuru also described the software as complicated.

That makes software reliability a meaningful part of the buying decision. A keyboard with a function layer and dial is more useful when you can configure those controls consistently. If your ideal setup requires extensive macros or multiple profiles, test the current software on your operating system during the return period. If the software is unavailable or unstable, the board still functions as a standard keyboard, but some of its customization value disappears.

Save a simple working layout before experimenting with firmware or advanced profiles. Use the supplied cable for updates, avoid interrupting a firmware process, and keep a basic configuration that does not depend on a complicated macro stack. These are sensible precautions because a failed update can leave troubleshooting more difficult than ordinary key remapping.

Gaming performance in practical terms

The CK721’s gaming strengths are its compact footprint, arrow keys, 2.4 GHz connection and high listed polling rate in wired and receiver modes. A smaller keyboard leaves more room for a mouse, which can matter to players using low sensitivity. N-key rollover in those two modes also avoids the 6-key limitation listed for Bluetooth.

Best Value
Cooler Master CK720 Hot-swappable 65% Space Gray Mechanical Gaming Keyboard, Kailh Box V2 Soft Click White Switches, Customizable RGB, USB-C Connectivity, 3-Way Dial, QWERTY (CK-720-GKKW1-US)
  • Hot-Swappable Mechanical Switches: Scratch that keyboard enthusiast itch by customizing each key without needing to pick up a soldering gun.
  • 3-way Customizable Dial: The precision dial gives you the tactile controls of a turn or a press, customizable via software.
  • Kailh Box V2 + Cherry MX Green Switches: Feel the smooth, clacky difference of enthusiast-level switches, plus extra MX Green switches for that heavy clicky actuation for modifier keys.
  • PBT Doubleshot for UK/UK/TC layouts: Increase durability with keycaps made with shineproof PBT and legends that are doubleshot so they won't wear off after heavy use
  • Removable Aluminum Top Plate: Offers ease of routine maintenance and better access when changing up switches.

For competitive gaming, connect by USB or 2.4 GHz, keep the receiver unobstructed and charge before a long session. Bluetooth is better viewed as a convenience mode for laptops, tablets and general play than as the mode to choose when every listed latency specification matters.

The board does not target enthusiasts who expect switch customization, premium keycap material or elaborate hardware-level profiles. Its appeal is practical: one keyboard that can move between a desktop, a laptop and a mobile device, with a dial and wrist rest included.

Current availability and how to identify the right listing

ASK Corporation marks the CK721 discontinued. That status applies to its listing and does not, by itself, prove that every market has no remaining stock. In 2026, a live listing could represent old retail inventory, an open-box unit or a used keyboard. Treat current price and availability as facts to verify at the moment of purchase, not as settled specifications from a historical review.

Before ordering, check each of these details:

  • Variant and model number: match the listing to Grey CK-721-GKTM1-US, White CK-721-SKTM1-US or Sakura Limited Edition CK-721-SKTR2-US where applicable.
  • Switch: confirm TTC Red, Brown or Blue rather than inferring it from the colorway.
  • Layout: verify the 67-key English layout and regional legends.
  • Condition: ask whether the keyboard is new, open-box, refurbished or used, and look for worn ABS caps, double-input symptoms and battery degradation.
  • Accessories: confirm the USB cable, 2.4 GHz receiver, receiver extender and wrist rest are included.
  • Port and battery: inspect the USB-C port for damage and ask whether the battery still holds a useful charge.
  • Returns: make sure the seller accepts returns if the switches chatter, the receiver is missing or the software cannot recognize the board.

KitGuru’s £129.99 figure was the UK launch price reported on February 22, 2022. It is historical context, not a current recommended price. A discontinued keyboard should be judged against its present condition and price, not against that launch number alone.

Strengths and weaknesses

Reasons to choose the CK721

  • Three connection modes cover USB, low-latency 2.4 GHz wireless and Bluetooth 5.1.
  • The 65% footprint saves desk space while retaining arrow keys.
  • Wired and 2.4 GHz modes list 1,000 Hz polling, 1 ms response and N-key rollover.
  • The aluminum top plate, rotary dial and included wrist rest add useful hardware beyond a basic compact board.
  • Windows, Mac, iOS and Android compatibility is listed in the manual.
  • The 2,000 mAh battery allows cable-free use, especially when lighting is limited.

Reasons to pass or buy only at the right price

  • ABS painted keycaps are less durable-looking than thick PBT alternatives.
  • Switches are not hot-swappable, so the original switch choice matters.
  • PCWorld found the tested switches wobbly and chattery, while KitGuru’s typing assessment was more positive.
  • The USB-C port may reject some replacement cables because of its narrow opening.
  • MasterPlus was reported to hang or crash during updates and layout programming, and KitGuru found it complicated.
  • Battery life varies sharply: the manual’s 73-hour figure assumes LEDs off, while KitGuru reported about 14 hours on 2.4 GHz.
  • ASK Corporation marks the product discontinued, making stock, support and condition variable.

Who should buy the Cooler Master CK721?

Buy it when you specifically want a compact keyboard that can switch between a gaming desktop, a work laptop and mobile devices, and when the particular listing has the switch type and accessories you need. The 2.4 GHz receiver, wrist rest and dial make it more versatile out of the box than a bare compact keyboard.

Choose a different type of keyboard if your priorities are hot-swappable switches, premium PBT keycaps, very bright lighting, dependable configuration software or predictable long runtime with RGB enabled. Those requirements address the CK721’s documented compromises rather than minor preferences.

The best buying decision depends on the exact remaining unit. A clean, complete keyboard at a sensible used or clearance price can make the compromises reasonable. An expensive listing with a worn battery, missing receiver or uncertain switch type removes much of the value that made the CK721 attractive in the first place.

Verdict

The Cooler Master CK721 is a capable but compromise-heavy 65% wireless mechanical keyboard. Its three connection modes, compact layout, aluminum top plate, dial and included wrist rest are genuine strengths. Its ABS keycaps, fixed switches, narrow port, variable battery life and unreliable or complicated software keep it from being an enthusiast standout.

PCWorld’s August 9, 2023 assessment captures the balance: In terms of value, the CK721 is approximately average, with points both for (included wrist rest, dual-mode wireless) and against it (ABS keycaps, cheap switches). KitGuru’s February 22, 2022 conclusion was more favorable: Despite a few niggling issues, the CK721 delivers great performance for a competitive price. Both views are useful. The CK721 makes sense when flexibility and portability outweigh switch refinement and customization, and when the current listing’s price and condition reflect that trade-off.
